1.
i'de like to see the bit after this video. It goes into a nice groove at the end. I love some of the smv stuff, like thunder but I didn't really enjoy this video to much. The start and the end were good but i found the middle a bit hard to listen to. Particularly as BottomEndian said between 2.10 and 2.30.
Watching the SMV videos on youtube etc, there are moments with 3 great bassists making great music, and then when they go into 'technique' mode, it clogs up, they all have a unique aproach and signature sounds which don't really fit in together.

This is easy to see on the version of 'Beat It' they did, they all go into this slap thing in the middle, and it just cocks the groove up as much as it can be cocked up...

But, they are 3 of the greatest bass players to have lived, and the three of them on a stage is great fun at times, and they're cool, and i'm not making a living from my bass playing, and they have and are. So my opinion is worth very little.

  2. Love playing with a Pick, have played with a pick from day 1, stopped for a couple of years, and in the band i've reintroduced it and i'm enjoying it.

The technique i can't get to grips with is double tapping, but to be fair i'd never ever use it to the level where i'd need to get better than i am at it.

I spent so much time slapping from about late teens into my early 20's, i then realised i should have been working on being a better bass player rather than the best slap bassist.

These days it's all root note fingerstyle, or nice chordal work and some nice straight picking.

Any technique is worth dipping your toes in as far as i'm concerned, it's like being a good mechanic with a decent toolkit.

  3. Hit me With Your Rythym Stick - Ian Dury And The Blockheads

But Anyway - Blues Traveller (Killer bass solo towards the end)

Please Do Not Go - Violent Femmes (Big bass part throughout, with a cool lead part in the middle)

Colour Me Once - Violent Femmes

    Barbary Coast - Jaco Pastorious

Sex In A Pan - Bela Fleck and the Flecktones

Let's Get Serious - Jermaine Jackson

I've Got a Right - Oleta Adams (Pino Palladino)

Hand In Hand - Phil Collins

Behind The Lines - Phil Collins

Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes - Paul Simon

A million others, listning to Hand In Hand as we speak, and i think it's a bigger inspiration on my playing than i realised; Alphonso Johnson is a monster on his performances throughout the Face Value album.

edit - Nightshift - The Commodores

  4. My lovely old Jap Squier has similar patches, and when I used it for a 12 hour recording marathon, I had marks up my right forearm akin to Nettle Rash.

Sounds mega though, so i'll take one for the team everytime I record.

edit - this photo doesn't really show what i'm on about = fail.

  5. Cheers Jake, a pleaseure to meet you and your buddy.

Sorry I didn't spend more time with you - having one of those days (long story).

I've ended up off work for a few days, so i'm hoping other people have been introduced to them, you never know.

I think the Body colours are brilliant, they've just missed the point on the tint of the necks - something i've already discussed with them.

But they do play great, and sound fantastic, as you said, easily knocks spots of an MIM Jazz.

I'm unsure if any e-mails have come through regarding prices, will check when i'm in tomorrow.
