I was ambivalent towards this question until Sunday, when I had the privilege of running through ThomBassMonkey's 500W GK head into Random Jon Poole's Marshall 8x10 - my GOD, I want a rig like that. Could totally lean back into it and feel the air move, haven't achieved that to such a degree with any of the rigs I've had.
Some of this is already up on the forum in other threads, but as I pack to move into my new flat I keep finding other bits that I can do without (and also, the up-front costs of moving are more than I remember them being ) so all in one place, here's my clearout! Anything that hasn't got pictures will have in the next day or so, and I'm still going to be in south Birmingham for anything that people might want to collect. First up, Aria electro-acoustic guitar - bit of a beater, but plays fine, sounds nice and electronics work as they should! Had this as my jam night/BBQ guitar; the pickup didn't work when I got it and I think the undersaddle piezo strip's actually dead, so I glued in an under-saddle 'bug' and wired it to the onboard tone and volume knobs instead. Has it's share of dings and scratches, as you can see, but I reckon well worth £40 of anyone's money as a spare/starter/rehearsal room/van acoustic. I have a Gator hardcase which I could (would want to!) ship it in if it needs shipping; this has a crack at the head end but it's still structurally sound, £15 to include it. Also have a Kawai KC20 synthesiser / MIDI controller, a nice-sized 'board for a home studio (only about a metre wide, full-size keys, pitch and mod wheels); this is in really good nick for a 15-year-old bit of kit (plastic still on the LCD screen) and sounds surprisingly good for its age too - string sounds in particular are lush, but everything on there's usable and the MIDI in/out means you can use it as a pretty fully-featured controller as well (no aftertouch, but apart from that...). Only looking for £60 delivered for this, you'd struggle get a sound-less 61-key controller for that! A Rode NT1 (not NT1A, one of the original ones; arguably better depending on which review/specs you read, but still an awesome Australia-built large-diaphragm condenser). I've used this for tons of stuff recording-wise, always delivers the goods and I've looked after it as such; in really good condition, complete with box, clamp and softcase. It's always been used with a popshield for vocals, too, so never had any hideousness in direct contact with it (I've nothing against lead vocalists, but, y'know...) £100 delivered. Also got an AKG C410 headset mic, with the B9 belt-clip power supply. Probably more of interest to singing drummers than anyone else, as it's not wireless, but this is a top-bollocks Britney job with a balanced 1/4" jack output on the beltpack. More used than the Rode (as I used it a fair few times as a singing drummer ); the plastic angle adjustment part on the headset kinda doesn't work, so it's held in place with tape, BUT once you've got it in place it's actually a really good quality mic capsule (same as the C4-- series drum mics) and has a brand-new windshield so you're in no danger of getting drummer-germs. I'll throw in the 6m balanced 1/4"-XLR (all Neutrik) cable I'd been using with this for £50 delivered, should you wish to hear your drummer's voice in a set you won't get better at that price. And finally an AKG C418 clip-on drum mic; this one doesn't work 'as is'. I bought it believing that even though some misguided fool had taken off the AKG phantom power adaptor and put on a regular XLR it'd work - it doesn't. I'm led to believe it's a fairly easy thing to rig up, but I haven't got the time to do it - the capsule itself checks out on a multimeter exactly as the 410 in the previous paragraph, but it needs some form of conditioning. Twenty-five quid delivered if you know what you're doing and can nurse it back to life (or if you want it for spares - it's got the case and everything). Again, more to come...

Um, I don't; there's an outside chance I could knock up a quick video of it for you this evening, but it's a VERY outside chance (everything in my flat is in boxes ready to move house, and what isn't I need to spend this evening boxing up ). There's a demo of a K10 on YouTube which looks pretty similar to the K20, but I haven't got sound on my computer at work so I can't listen to it.

Drum kit for 17yr starter - Xmas present type thing.
Many thanks for all the input & wise words, I'll certainly relay your thoughts but I have a feeling it's going to be shop bought most likely Bonners as they're close http://www.bonnersmu...c-drum-kits.irc or online. From my experience with Bonners - they never do anything 'bargain price'! So I'll put forward some online recommendations to maybe save him a few bob, having said that - he's not short of readies it seems!
In that case (and since Bonners seem to be a Gretsch dealer), tell him to get a Catalina Club ordered in, and a set of Stagg SHs/DHs (or Paiste PST5s if he can spend the extra - NOT the PST3s though, they are brass sh*t). Would be a semi-pro quality kit for six hundred quid-ish. -
My suggestion: Go used. My bands drummer currently uses a Pearl Export kit (Cost him £250 with a set of Zildjian ZBT's and all hardware) and a set of Sabian B8's (Cost him £100 used). Altogether £350 for almost a pro level kit, cymbals aren't the best but they're better than most starter sets.
This ^^^ Mapex Venus/V, Premier Cabria/XPK (even Artist if you drop lucky), Gretsch Catalina, Yamaha Rydeen, Tama Swingstar....yeah, alright, even Pearl will do a MUCH better job in the long run than the equivalent-priced kit new. As well as cymbals (and by the way, again secondhand, some of Stagg's SH and DH series were PHENOMENAL; you might have to go through a few duffers to find the good 'uns, but they're cheap as chips used and when you do get a good one it's easily as good as anything Zildjian or Sabian make - apparently they used ex-Zildjian machinery shipped out to the Far East), you may want to budget for decent heads on there, which could run you close to a ton on its own depending on how big the kit is / what heads you use - good heads and tuning can totally transform a kit. Oh, and once he starts gigging it you'd want to look at quality hardware as well (I swear by Gibraltar, but Yamaha are good too and some of the other companies' own-brand stuff is fine). -
I have Marshall 4x10 and 1x15 cabs, they sound killer, look amazing and cost me about sixty quid each. Made of win.

Seem to have splurged a little too much this month, so need to move on a couple of bits and pieces - this 'board's done sterling service in my home studio for a year or so but guess I can do without as I'm not doing anything electronic at the minute! Late '90s job, from what I can find out from t'inferweb - it's in superb nick if it really is that old, still got the sticky plastic on the LCD screen! Some really good inbuilt sounds (the strings are particularly good, and there's some very nice 'layered' sound presets), and MIDI in/out to integrate into a home studio setup. Super light and compact, as well (I've fit it into a guitar gigbag before now), so make an ideal live synth. Manual here: www.kawaius-tsd.com/OM/K_SYNTH/KC20.pdf After £60 for this, plus any delivery, or of course you're welcome to collect (south Birmingham, or have a look where we're on tour in my sig). Gimme a shout if you want to know any more!
