1. cant wait to read a review from gigging conditions and also i'd love a comparison against some of the big old boy SS / Valve amps. Darkglass say this amp is a no compromise amplifier so my fingers are crossed it stacks u well. Not used a class d that even compares to my SVT as of yet so lets see if this comes close.
2. Up for grabs is my recently acquired in a trade deal custom built Iceni Zoot "Allure" Jazz 5 with EMG pickups and preamp. The 40P5 pickup in this thing is awesome, and the DC gives that Stingray esq snap and just sounds massive! The neck is great and is nice n narrow which is why i tried it. I just dont cut it on a 5 String (knackered wrist) and want to go back to more passive bass again. Specs are as follows. made in the UK in 2010. Slab body made of ash, maple neck & fretboard, EMG 40P5 neck pickup, EMG 40DC bridge pickup, EMG BQC system preamp, 34 inch scale, 45 mm nut width, 17.5mm string spacing, only 4.1 kg! Happily sell for £700 ono or better trades for 4 sting Fender Jazz / Sandberg / Spector / Yamaha BB / Warwick etc as i am always wanting more toys. 3.
Check my original post, I said for ME it won't be an issue. I understand some will want to change voices mid song. I have never done this, I will switch on another drive pedal or something to change sounds mid song, I wouldn't try and adjust the pedal already on. This is the same for me. Chances are, the settings used on the B3K voicing won't be the same settings you use on the Vintage voicing (this is absolutely true for me) and as such simply switching voices won't be enough, I would need to change the blend, gain, level and tone as well. I just personally would never be in a situation where changing the voice on the amp would not be practical.
yeah i totally didnt think of that! what a tool, chances are it would really need tweaking n stuff to get it right between the two styles making it much more complicated. Fair one! totally overlooked that. and yup, mis-read your posts, my bad... nothing to see here
4.
Yes, that's what it does? Guy you quoted was talking about it switching voices mid song, which I agree would not really be necessary.
trying not be an arse but how can you say its not necessary? It all depends on what you play and how you create your bass lines. I can think of loads of uses for switching drives with the style and songs i write with my band and loads of uses for it for tracks i have already written that i could back track on. Its all about flexibility for me. My B7K is my permanently on sound and it cranked as well, it would be ace to be able to change the drive from my standard raging one to a more valve overdrive for different sections / solos / dynamics etc. i get why they did not put it on, to save on different cables / cost n stuff, its just a shame to not have the flexibility as it would be a proper swiss army knife then.
5. i think they missed a trick on being able to switch from vintage microtubes to B3K engines via the foot switch, that would have been ace. I would have been sold at that.
6. i simply cant entertain one, just because of Nolly's sh!t jumper haha!
7.
Have you ever compared the PRO2 with the PRO4? How do they stack up?
i've not used both but have gigged with a few guys running the 4 pro and i've always been impressed by them. The big valve Ampegs are always gonna be the ones for me though as they are just beasts!
8. Nice one. Ampeg all the way. If you ever think it's getting heavy, carry around a svt 2 pro for 2 minutes and you will think yours is a car stereo lol. Mine weighs in at 45kg with the flightcase. Enjoy it!
9. if this had come in around £250 less than it is, i would have considered it as a backup to my SVT2 as i just love that Darkglass tone. At that price and knowing what wimpy power unit that is still being flogged to us i think i will keep passing on the class D thing until we start seeing some of the pro ones that get used in higher class PA amps (crown etc) coming over to us to use.
10. ok so had a bit of a breakthrough with these things yesterday, reset all my rig and tweaked a couple of things and got it sounding pretty darn good. I think i need to give them a chance now, still think that the 40DC may have to go and look at something else in the range. Heard good things about using 2 of the 40P to get more of a grunty fender vibe. feeling better about them now which is nice! just needed a fresh input on things i think.
11.
Definitely try the X models instead (DCX for example) as they have a more traditional and slightly less hifi tone. Or if you want to try something a different size then the Alnico EMG's are really nice. Coming away from EMG, well I love the Aguilar DCB - a great sounding passive pickup - The Delano SBC is very nice too but has a different flavour. Nordstrand, I think the big singles are superb and would love to give more of Carey's products a test drive for sure. My 'grunty' pickup of choice is a Dimarzio P style but this may not fit the configuration! I need to try some J styles, just a shame Dimarzio don't do soap bars!
Cheers Dood, i will check out the DCX stuff.
Carey's Big Singles are GREAT pickups. You won't be disappointed..... and you can get them in EMG soapbar size covers: http://nordstrandpic...ts/big-singles/ Did you consider going all passive (no preamp at all) ? That will definitely ad some grunt as well!
hhmmm interesting thought. i may look at that as an option! food for thought. I do love the passive grunt!
12. yeah they are a 40DC and a 40P5. I will have a nose at what else they do but i think i am just not a fan of how clean these things run. Had them in a few Spectors that have all gone by the wayside mainly because of this issue i think. Nice one
13. yeah thats kinda what i meant, clear signal. dont like it, i like grunt and anger lol. cool thanks for the heads up on the earthing. I got told it originally had bartonili's in it and they got replaced but will do a check anyway. Nice one
14. Yo!! Recently had a NBD by getting an Iceni Zoot Jazz 5 by doing a trade on here. Lovely bass, great neck and nice chunky slab body. I just cant stand the EMG pickups and preamp that are in it. Sounds so sterile and far too much choice for my liking with the 3 band EQ with mid shift as well. Just cant seem to find any setting that sounds natural. My other basses are Sandbergs and have Haussel and Delano pickups in them paired with the standard Glockenklang pre amp which i love, never need to adjust anything on them. I want to change out the EMG stuff for a pair of Nordstrand Big Singles and the same Glock pre amp that comes with the Sandbergs, just to get somewhere close to how they react. I have never changed out all the electronics on a bass before as have always been happy with whats in there. Do you guys think i will see a noticeable difference and get close to where i want to be as i have never done this before? Cheers Will
15. bumpy up. final price drop to £600 will split these up as well if someone wants one stonking 4 ohm cab to get the best out of a solid state amp for £300. i'll happily keep one of them as a just in case. great cabs these with an awesome sound, no need for brand snobbery to get great cabs!
16. Big rig - Ampeg SVT 2 pro running through Marshall VBC8x10. Setup includes Origin Effects Cali76 compressor and Darkglass B7K Medium / Small rig - See above. All the heft, punch, weight, growl you can ever need. Lol
17. bump, anyone is welcome to come have a blast through these at my rehearsal studio.
18. dont do it man, no amp like a valve amp! everything else is just compromise
19. I have up for grabs my custom spec'd Zilla 2x10 4ohm 400w each rear ported bass cabs. Loaded with Celestion BL-10 200X ceramic drivers. The cabs are no more than 6 months old and are in as new condition. No rips or tears on the baddass black with yellow stripes tolex. These great cabs weigh in at 25kg each and are a real easy carry. I had them made at 4 ohms each as i use an Ampeg SVT 2 and wanted to be able to split the cabs if need be. Included will be a funky magic box (made by OBBM) that turns both the cabs into an 8ohm load. rear panel has speakon and locking jack inputs. Perfect for running big valve amps or Power amp / pre amp setups for low impedance loads. Only reason i am putting these up for grabs is that i am lucky enough to be touring in a big van and landed on a bargain 8x10 so want to stick with that. Anyone who knows Zilla cabs know that they seriously know how to make great sounding boxes and these are killer. having a 400w handling each and being rear ported really kicks ass with some serious bottom end! I have let some players use them on my band's current tour and have had nothing but great praise for how good they sound. Ideally i'd quite like a trade for something 5 stringy rather than sale, i'm looking at Spector/Fender/Peavey T40/Musicman/Sandberg basses kind of thing, show me what you got! Of course if you just wanna buy, i'm up for that as well! pics below.... 20. no mate not yet, i got a bargain on an old Marshall VBC810 which is better suited for me as i'm touring all the time and quite happy to see that one get busted, so my 2x10's are sitting around not doing much at the mo! when the marshall is dead it will be replaced with a 6 or 8x10 Zilla.
