Doe a bass tutorial book exist that isn't dry as an old stick?
Marvin replied to Clarky's topic in Theory and Technique
I am rubbish at theory and have a large pile of books at home that I thought at various times would help me through the maze. Trouble is they are all as dull as ditch-water and I give up faster than you can say E flat minor seventh. Take Chuck Rainey's tutor book (called something like Modern Bass Guitar or Electric Bass Guitar). It simply includes pages upon pages of scales, arpeggios etc with no musical context. Does anyone know of a bass tutorial book that could actually make this stuff fun by bringing in real life applications. By which I mean, perhaps showing a scale, relating it to the composition and melody or bass line of a well-known track, then taking variations to show how it could be applied in different styles? When jakesbass did a tutorial at the SE BassBash last year he did something along these lines and it was very inspiring - unfortunately all I can remember of his talk now is his enthusiasm, ability and that awesome Alembic! Edit: I know lessons from a good tutor would help but I have very little time as I leave the house for work at 6am, get home 7.30pm-ish and have a wife and three kids to amuse/deal with etc (as well as BassChat to stare at endleessly). Practically speaking I couldn't do more than one maybe two lessons a month
I'd go for a lesson a month if that's all you can fit in. I'm in a similar situation, I'd love to have lessons but can't fit them in. As for books it's really trial and error. Sometimes because you can't ask questions it can cause a fair deal of confusion. I've got a couple of books that use short exerts as examples. Adrian Ashton's Bass Handbook and Hal Leonard's Bass Method The start very simple, the Adrian Ashton book has a few longer examples to practice with. They're OK. But probably no more interesting than you've already got. I've also got Bass Guitar for Dummies but I don't use it. -
I'm not a huge Audioslave fan much prefer Tim in RATM, most "supergroups" are never as good as their original bands though imho.
I was only listening to Audioslave's first album earlier and thinking how underrated they were. But each to their own. Tim has a great tone on that album. Also must reiterate the guy from Cog, sounds b0llocks brilliant. Listening to it now.
I've got a van with a disabled conversion and a Singlecut. I'm comfortable with my immense coolness.
In actual fact what, what does a van with a Singlecut look like.

I'm vein, simple. Saying that I drive a Nissan Almera Tino. I like to think it's ironically cool.

Considering that I am now beginning to appear quite regularly on 'todays top 20 posters', I'd have to say my addiction is getting steadily worse Ironically it got worse after Countbassy asked, in his thread, how to cut down or wean himself off BC. It seems to have the opposite effect on me.

I was initially wondering, as like in my OP I've found differing opinions. I tend to alternate, I think, but have noticed that I do occasionally rake. However, raking from an open string my muting isn't always what it could be. Thank you for the advice and opinions.

I've nothing really positive to add, I just wanted to say it's been a lovely 5 pages of reading. I too struggle somewhat with the ohms stuff, which is not a good sign as I have a maths based degree . It's also been of help, as I too will be looking to buy a similar sized set up at some point - well probably when the kids have left home and I have some free time. So that'll probably be in about 20 years
-
Simple, is raking good or bad, or does it not matter. I only ask as I've read conflicting opinions in a couple of books.

Personally, I do not like single cutaways. The aesthetics don't work IMO, they appear unbalanced in my eye (please note in my eye, it's not a comment weight distribution). The Warwick specifically, the wood itself looks awful. Warwick is probably my favourite bass manufacturer, but I am wondering what on earth is going on in that company lately, given some of the designs they are coming up with and their pricing.
But then you do own an Ibanez.......pot calling the kettle black?! lol I like the Thumb SC actually, and I'm a bit of a traditionalist with body shapes Si
:snob: Well, really!

I wish I could fit some lessons in. So I would probably be in the go for it category.
I have an old Marshall DBS 72410 combo... it sounds fantastic but it weighs 65 kg or something like that, its rediculous. Im trying to think about how to battle the weight problem.
I don't even weigh that much. Me, I'd flog it and by something lighter. But I'm lazy.
Hope for us all.....even Pino does wedding gigs! Si
Hope goes up!
Alternatively, if Pino's doing weddings now, what chance does that give us mere mortals? A
And then down.

Welcome, it would be nice to hear some of your work.

Welcome to basschat. Hangs head in shame, as I cannot remember any of the French I learnt at school.

My bottom jaw protrudes, my tongue dangles out the corner of my mouth and I frown. So I have no advice for you I'm afraid. All that sounds bloody awful doesn't it? EDIT: no there are no photos of this abomination, and I'm off to find a large paper bag to hide my hideous bass face.
News German ones seem to be on sale for nearly double what I paid for mine new last September. Thomann and others are cashing in perhaps? I love my German Corvettes.
I love your German Corvettes.
I'm of the 'working it out by ear' variety. Nothing wrong with using books, and I do occasionally, but I find it's better to try and work it out myself and get a feel for it, only looking at a book if I'm really stuck.

Ok.. I'm being an eejit and thought you meant learning the songs.. feel free to ignore me
My 'ear' isn't very good. I'm sort of trying to learn some theory and to read music in order to improve my overall playing, which is quite weak TBH. Learning a few songs along the way would be a nice bonus though, and it may improve my ear. Besides Karnivool fans aren't eejits

Lessons From Someone Other Than A Bass Player
Wow, Ali Akhbar Khan - I'm impressed! I know most people tend to think of Ravi Shankar here when it comes to Sitar -- mostly thanks to The Beatles, I guess -- but I've heard a few things from AAK and he is mind-blowing! I'm certainly no expert myself in this field. No doubt, there are other excellent sitarists around. I just haven't heard them.
Totally Off Topic, but they were saying on the wireless this morning Ravi Shanker is 90 this year. I couldn't believe it. -
would you not be better off using Guitar pro which allows you to hide the tab and just look at notation. I think my version cost 30 quid
I'd never really thought of that, as I am not at all familiar with Guitar Pro. Like Doddy though I prefer to practice away from the computer, in part due to where it is. Or can you print notation off from Guitar Pro? As I said I don't know anything about this software.
