1. Thanks BottomEndian that's all very helpful. I'm (pleasantly) surprised that TI's work with the shorter scale. A bit curious about the triple coil - and so much else! Do you have any recordings or sound clips of yours that you can point me to?
Oh lord, that one's just lovely. If I didn't have one that was virtually identical... On both of my 33" ACGs, the low B works perfectly. Alan's worked some sort of voodoo magic into the necks (I think it's actually just that they're incredibly stiff) that means it feels pretty similar to a 34" B-string. I've got TI flats on both of mine, which are pretty low-tension, high-flexibility strings, and they don't feel at all flabby. And the sound of the B-string is well integrated into the rest; it's not like some 5ers where you hit the B and it sounds completely different. It's part of the instrument. (If you're really interested in the 33" thing, try dropping Eude a PM and see if he's going to the SE bash now he's a Londoner. He's got 33"-scale basses, ACG and Shuker, although they're both fretted and I think neither has the piezo.) The RFS is a monster pickup, with the meaty humbucker sound (reminiscent of a StingRay) and funky single-coil in one unit. The only downside is that there's a volume drop when you switch to triple-coil mode (unless Alan's worked out a solution to that problem). It's another great sound (kind of like the humbucker but with extra bite) when you whack up the volume on your amp to compensate, but it's a fair bit quieter than the others. Just a minor quibble. The piezo, though... that's where the joy is. Suits fretless really, really well, and it ties in with the filter preamp to bring out the mwaah really nicely. The filter's a very "musical" system, and although it's not intuitive when you've been used to 3-band (or whatever) for years, it doesn't take long to get your head round it and there are loads of great sounds in there. Hope that helps in some way.
2.
Ian, I am hoping to have my new headless 5 in time for the Bash.
Thanks Dave, I'll bet you can't wait!
  3.
If you find yourself in my neck of the woods give me a shout may also bring to these bassbash if I can go!
Thanks charic and if you do decide to take yours to the SE bash let me know. Cheers
  4.
Ooooh, which one is it? I can't remember there being any recent stock builds with 33" scale. (FWIW, I'd say just go for it, but then again I've got two 33"-scale flat-boarded ACGs with filter preamps. )
It's 0067 (http://www.acguitars.co.uk/Gallery/237/), this one's actually a 34" although I'd be interested to know how well a low B works with 33". Alan mentioned that you had the same/similar spec. I'd very much appreciate any views you can offer on the RFS and piezo setup and this configuration in general.
  5. I'm looking at buying an ACG (one listed on the ACG website) but would like to try one out first to get an idea of the 33" scale, flat fingerboard and filter preamp. Does anyone know of any ACG owners in the Surrey/W.Sussex neck of the woods? If anyone has an ACG to sell better still (fat chance I know)!

  8.
the oil would seal it though wouldn't it? I've left the lacquer on the rest of the neck, it just the finger board i need to re finish.
EBMM use Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil to seal and finish their maple fingerboards. You can get it here - http://www.ukcamo.com/items/item.aspx?itemid=546450 I've used this myself, it's easy to apply and buffs up to a nice satin finish.
  9.
I would hope that's 12lbs not kg!
BGM must have reviewed the one with plutonium pups 4kg (8.8lbs) according to Bass Direct http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...ha_BB_1024.html
  10. Sold my EBMM SR5 neck to Cham. Couldn't ask for a more pleasant and straightforward buyer. A credit to the basschat community. Cheers, Cham!
  11.
And here's another of it now.
Looks pretty good to me. Fender bridges don't allow for fine string spacing adjustments, it's just a case of finding the best spacing you can with the pre-grooved saddles. You've done a good job!
  12. As mentioned above the decal is completely wrong - too many patent numbers under the 'Fender', the 'jazz bass' bit isn't aligned correctly and is too compressed (the final 's' should almost touch the G tuning peg, the 'offset contour body' should be higher up towards the ball of the headstock. Also 70s tuning pegs didn't have rivets joining the padel to the shaft - the ones on this bass look like vintage reissues. Definitely not what it says it is
  13. I have a set of Villex pups on my Squier VMJ fretless which I can highly recommend. They have a very different sound to regular pups ranging from a fundamental tone not unlike an upright bass (with the mid-tone control rolled off) to nasally jaco-esque tones (with the mids up). I've also heard good things about DiMarzio Model Js for fretless (not Super Js). Plan to try these myself sometime soon but haven't yet.
  14. Buyer in Oz seems to have disappeared so still available. Near offers and trades considered
  15.
Ian, I had a pm via the EB Forum 2 days ago from a Zacbass who was looking for an RW neck. He thought that I might still have the one from my SR5.
Cheers Dave, I'll ping him a message
  16. Surely must be someone out there who could make good use of this..?
  17.
Hello. I recently managed to pick up a Mexican Deluxe Active Jazz Bass for a bargain price but it needs a little TLC. Does anyone know where I can order a set of Jazz Bass knobs to fit solid shaft pots? I'm in need of the stacked Bass/Treble EQ knob along with the regulars. Could also do with a new battery cover. The old one was held on with Sellotape! I've tried allparts, axesrus, WD and a few local shops but I've had no luck so far. I've even tried contacting Fender who never got back to me. Would appreciate any suggestions. Cheers!
You can mail order Fender deluxe concentric stacked knobs and most other Fender parts from the US here http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/guitarknobs_fender.htm if that helps
  18.
Wow MM necks are as rare as rocking horse poo, someone must want this, if only to upgrade their OLP or SUB5. Out of interest what did you replace this neck with? I though MM only sent out replacements if you sent back the old one.
Replaced it with an EBMM maple neck, I just got lucky and managed to hang on to both necks
  19.
thx bud I didnt realise they were so cheap....... I may as well buy some suitable ones rather than tie up yours!
You may also find a set of welding nozzle tip cleaners handy: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=welding...6.c0.m270.l1313 Regular needle files generally aren't fine enough to cut nut slots for the higher strings (at least mine aren't). The nozzle cleaners are much finer. They don't have enough cutting power to cut a nut from scratch but I've found them useful for making fine adjustments to nut slots, particularly for the G and D strings.
  20. I have a lovely Stingray 5 neck with rosewood board for sale. Excellent condition, no issues, beautiful piece of rosewood, back of neck nicely worn in with a silky touch and lovely rich hue (see pics). This neck is from my 2000 SR5 which I owned from new (recently sold here on BC to fund purchase of a '92 SR5). I changed the neck to maple last December. After 9 years with RW I just fancied giving maple a try. The bass sold with the maple neck which leaves me with a spare RW neck. Currently surplus to requirements so it might as well go to someone who can put it to good use. These don't come up very often so if you've been looking for an SR5 neck here's a rare opportunity! ** NOW SOLD **
