I thought Queen were OK, the musicals section wasn't bad, and Hans Zimmer was OK. Duran Duran were by far the best part of the night, I hadn't realized what a simply great band they are. And I now want that Dingwall! The rest of it was meh...

Thanks. Almost a week with this bass, and I'm really enjoying playing it. I haven't done any setup on it at all, and it's basically fine. I am getting a little bit of buzz when fretting near the nut, so I will probably tweak the truss rod when I get some time.

I see markup for formatting, but not any actual formatting. Wondering if I have just missed something or I am not set up properly. Never mind, seems to be fixed now. Perhaps it fixed itself when I switched to the dark theme.

It's arrived, and I can make noises with it. So that's a good start. Not as different to playing fretted as I thought it would be, although I definitely have a lot of work to do on my intonation (understatement of the year). Huge amount of tonal variation possible with the active electronics - haven't played much with passive mode yet but I can confirm that it works. As the van arrived with the package, "So What" (Miles Davis) came on the radio, so I guess its a sign, I will have to try and learn that now LOL.

I considered getting the 5 version of the fretless (it's actually cheaper than the 4) but in the end I decided that learning to play a 5 and a fretless at the same time was too big of a step!

I made a second attempt at listening to a Tool album the other day, nope, still sounds like 4 hours of the same chord with some moaning bloke waffling over the top.

Fancied giving fretless a try but didn't want to commit too much of the hard-earned just in case I don't like it. Thoughts / advice for a beginner?

I use one of those Amplug things from time to time - sure there is a bit of a hiss but you can't go wrong for the price, and they have a basic drum machine and audio input too. Most of the time I just go through my Ashdown Studio amp with headphones plugged in though.

I'm speaking as a fairly recent convert to Rush, hearing Xanadu on the radio was what inspired me to pick up the bass again after 25 years. I think Exit Stage Left is a fantastic album, but mainly because it has all my favourite Rush songs - the sound quality is not that good. The "Live at YYZ" part of Moving Pictures 40 is like a better ESL, it might become my new favourite.
