1. Newtone strings can hand wind you a slightly higher tension string which would mean you can have it in Drop D tuning with whatever gauge you like, and still have the same action and impact as standard tuning, although they'd feel a bit tight if you tuned back up to standard again.

(do you mean just Drop D, or Drop D Standard, so DADG or DGCF?)?

I use Newtones exclusively for standard tuning, and also a high tension set for Drop C standard.

And the price, about the same as a set of Elites....delivered, nice

p.s.
most think that increased tension is caused by thicker gauge strings, thats true to a small degree, but the majority of tension is controlled by the core of the string. Newtone can increas the size of the core to suit your tuning, potentially allowing you to use thin gauges for low tunings if you don't want fat strings.

2. Its funny you should talk about vocalising things Mikey.
Quite often when we're bored in the band van (especially on tour) we'd practice polyrhythms by each picking a different set of words and seeing how long we could go before someone messed up :)

Our faves were:
What-is-the-beef = 4
against
Cheese-on-toast = 3
against
Un-i-ver-sit-y = 5

anyway, quite fun lol

3.
Heh, 4 months ago i might have been interested! But alas, I have never played a Jazz i got on with :) , Plus unless it was a status or a rick i would prefer 5 strings and above  I may have to go custom shop or warmoth to get the jazz i want! (P bass neck)

And yeah, She said after being together for 5 years its about time  Have to pop her the question by the 22nd of November or else!

I am gonna hire out a hot air balloon and propose there

Its going to be a LONG engagement.
Thats cool dude, pity, cos its almost a kinda deep dark pink  lol

Not to hijack the thread but "5 years, its about time"?? and "gotta propose or else"?, that whole middle line makes it sound alll wrong IMO. I know people who have been together and extremely happy for 15 years without needing to get married. And i've never seen the point in LOOONG engagements, just love each other till you can afford to get married then do it straight away. Don't get rushed into it, you're only 22 dude. But anyway lol

Good luck with spending your wad

4. How can an amp be more efficient running through 1 cab at 4 ohms, if you're running 2 cabs at 8ohms, therefore running the amp down to 4ohms, then its exactly the same resistance and power output. It would also sound louder with two cabs as you're pushing more air through more speakers.

For example if you were running your amp with one 4ohm 2x10 and the same amp with two 8ohm 2x10's, i would expect the amps efficiency to be exactly the same!! But i would expect the larger rig to 'sound' louder

Not that i know ANYTHING about amps really lol

5. Hullo all, thought I'd start my Encore Refurb/Rebuild thread.

Basically, I've got my first ever bass, a mid 90's, maybe early 90's Precision style Encore bass. Pearl White in colour with a white scratchplate, it originally had a rosewood fingerboard.
In around 2000 i had it converted to fretless, i say that rather then de-fretted because the whole fingerboard was replaced, with an unlined maple one.

At the same time i changed the tuners for some no-name but much sturdier tuners, coated the cavity with foil and replaced the pickup with a DiMarzio DP122 pickup (which made way for the pictured Bartolini Model P about a year later), i also took the scratchplate to a car decal shop and had them add the black squares that made up the chequered look. I strung it with Black Rotosound Tru-Bass strings, giving a double bass-esque sound.

The bass in this form became kinda redundant after i had my Shuker EUB built and has been sitting in its case ever since.
"So" i thought, "I'll make it usable again". I decided that i wanted to put a Maple Jazz Neck on it, i wanted block inlays and binding but an Allparts dotted maple jazz neck became available on the forum at a price i could't say no to:

It actually has some really nice grain in it!:

It came yesterday, and i fitted it, with a pretty tight neck joint resulting, i've definatly seen loser joints on vintage fenders and other stock basses:

I purchased new mini-pots and a string retainer from Allparts, stripped the scratchplate of the chequers and replaced the Bart with the Dimarzio once again (higher output passively). All got wired in today, and although theres still a bit of buzz to sort out, its starting to all come together:

Plans over the next week or two are to purchase some Gotoh GB-4N 'CBS era' Fender style tuners from Allparts, sort out the electrics good and proper, i also have some nickel barrel knobs to go on. I'm also going to order an S series Fender Jazz Bass Decal for the headstock, "WHY" you ask? Just because i like the Fender headstock aesthetic over a blank one really and the early 80's are when Maple Dotted Jazz necks appeared and pearl white became available as a colour. I have no plans on selling the bass anyway, worth nothing to anyone but me :).

So everything will be in place for an early 80's looking Precision bass with an early 80's Jazz neck . Finally, I've got some Warwick 40-100 strings to pop on while she gets setup etc then she'll be strung up with Newtone Diamonds 40-100 for her playing life .

Updates and soundclips ASAP

Cheers

p.s.
i believe the body to be made of Alder as its a good weight and feels nice and solid!

6. Well, if you go by Vintage & Rare Guitar's prices, then about £2,850

of course, no-one takes them seriously.
I'd hate to value and be wrong, but i'm gonna go for £1800, because it hasn't got the ashtrays and you'd have to replace the top fret.
Other forum members like 99ster will give you a much better idea!!

8. Yeah that'd be fine by me mate!
Ummm, i have no idea what the postage would be on them, i'll try and find out at some point but i'm working today.
If you want, find out by taking a pack 'o' strings to the post office and see how they weigh in and just send the envelope when you find out. PM me for my address :)

Cheers
