1. I tend not to learn anything with open strings to much in case someone decides to change the key of a tune. Obviously you can't really avoid it on a 4 string with the low E :)

I also prefer the sound of fretted notes, I'd have a zero fret on my basses, but I'm playing fender at the mo.
But having said that, if i'm playing a piece and an open note will help me play the line better/smoother/to greater effect, then of course i won't rule them out completly.

The only thing i really use open strings is for peddling off of.

2.
.... I play ONE wrong note and they give me hell ...
I think herein lies the rub! :)
If a guitarist or other chord based instrument plays a wrong note it generally gets soaked up by everything else going on, being the providers of laying out the Harmony etc, if we play out of key, its a bit more obvious.

The situation in my two bands:
First Signs Of Frost: 2 guitarists, all parts are written and rehearsed as is, no room for messing around. And so mistakes are less frequent because we're all good players and make sure our proverbial is together!
Re:cover (covers band): one guitarist so i have a bit more sonic and harmonic space to play about with whilst he's soloing etc, and thats when i "explore my modes" and chordal playing etc. I've found that the Phrygian Dominant mode works great in Superstition! :-D

The worst clanger I've managed is when we played a birthday party in the covers band, and we had to learn a load of 70's disco funk etc, not my fave! Most of the keys were in E or B for the singer, i couldn't hear the guitarist one iota!! So we started Sex Machine, he was playing in E, and me in B.............at least it was a harmony......the whole way though the song haha. The poor singer couldn't pitch it! Thats definitely the worst!

3. So usually the NS Design uprights come on Tripods and are active, the CRT is a passive bass on a spike, aimed at acoustic upright players. In this way its very similar to the Mo Clifton mini, although that is active.

So your options so far from this topic are:
NS Design CRT: One for sale here - Tryed and tested basses personally & worldwide, great tone 42 and half inch scale, spike
Mo Clifton Mini Mo: One for sale here - Personally tryed and tested, great sound, 36" scale, spike
Yamaha Silent Bass: One for sale on Wardour Street, untested by me, i see very mixed reviews so definatly try before you buy! 42 and a half inch scale, spike
Shuker Upright: Custom Order, Any woods, options and scale lengths you want, Tripod. I can personally recommend these basses and can offer you try mine out before you buy.

4. The only real SC story i have is when we visited the Nottingham one on our May tour just gone.

At the time i was in 'Active Jazz' mode (now satisfied by my Deluxe), but they had a Miller Jazz on the wall, i said "May i try this please", they even had the exact stack that i use to play though, perfect!.

"No"
Ummm, right, any reason? lol
Apparently it was protected stock from HQ or something, i can buy it if i like, but couldn't try it. It wasn't cos i looked or smelt a bit mucky (touring does that to you), because i tried a couple of more expensive Stingrays.

But what a ridiculous policy!
I've looked around the Oxford street one a few times, never tried anything though. Dunno, didn't like the atmosphere much so left! :)

5. Hey dude!

Umm well don't get a cheap one lol, like the Dean thing! Eugh

The most popular EUB is probably the NS Design Upright, can be seen in most of the Bass orientated shops in London, Cellar, Gallery, Centre etc.
The Bass Gallery in Camden usually carrys a few other makes, some second hand etc.

Then theres the few Custom builders in the UK, Mo Clifton is in Blackheath in london and John Shuker is in Sheffield. Theres a few other builders to.

I personally play a Shuker 36" scale EUB, and a good friend of mine has the Clifton Mini Mo, both cheaper then the NS Design, but you have to wait until they're built to try them obviously. You're more then welcome to try my Shuker if you want a trip out to south Bucks.

Hope this helps

6. I've always worked by the 'rule' of thumb that you should have the bass at the same height standing as when your sitting with it on your lap.
That way you're not playing in two completely different ways.

Cool

7. Cheers Burpster!
I actually emailed JHS (the Encore distributor now) and asked about older encores, and he just said that most replacement necks should fit, but i might have to apply "judicious trimming and/or shimmying".

So yeah i'll give it a measure and talk to allparts, they have a really nice Maple and Bound/Block inlays Jazz Neck for £200

Mmmm, nice

8. Mines not to heavy, maybe a tiny bit heavier then my USA Jazzes, but theres not way this neck feels like a toy, nice and smooth, solid. I think i may got a rare good one! :)
I want it to be fretted, but am reluctant to change the neck, i would prefer to just refret this fingerboard!, or have a fretted fingerboard built!

9. Indeed, mine is really solid feeling and well made! Tight neck pocket!!

As you can see, the headstock is pretty much a direct Fender Copy, as opposed to the newer Encore ones

Heres some pics, obviously its had a number of mods since i first got it many years ago :)
1. Custom built Unlined Maple fretless fingerboard (added by my uncle)
2. Bartolini P Pickup (Passive at the moment)
3. Original scratchplate but with added black chequers. May replace soon for something a bit more tasteful!
4. Black Barrel Knobs
5. I sanded the name off the headstock when i was a kid cos i didn't like the idea it was cheap! Oh how we learn...
6. ...at the same time i coated the whole of the inside cavity with tin foil, my young attempt at shielding, pretty good though!

10.
The sad thing is that I'd buy it if it was a bass/guitar twin neck.
Lame

(this thread is probabely much more humorous to me because i'm hearing Cartman saying my responses lol)

11. Bunny are at Fringe Festival Meadows on 12th August if anyone's interested.
If you see them, say Hi to Miles the guitarist from Simon, his bass player lol :)
