1.
Ask Oxblood - our resident valve expert.
Oh cripes, I've become an expert! Anyhoo, here's what I know, FWIW. If it's definitely a Dominator Mk 1, you're looking at (now don't die of shock) a stonking FIFTEEN WATTS of earth-shaking bass!! However, there were many models of the Dominator, so who knows, maybe it isn't a Mk 1. I think the most powerful valve version was 50 Watts. They did a 100 Watt solid state one as well. Can you post some pics showing the insides? I love a good bit of valve porn.
2. Same thing has just happened to me - sort of. I've just made a reply regarding the new banners (in its new location, Off Topic) and there it was, visible. Went back to the home page (not using the back button but by selecting "Basschat.co.uk"), and found that my post had vanished. Visited the topic using another computer, and it has returned again. Weird. Just FYI: I have all of my browsers set never to cache any site content.
3. My God, have you seen this one? Harley Benton HBB 1960 Unless I'm very much mistaken, that is a Dean 'Stylist' re-badged - and for a fraction of the price! The fret markers are central instead of offset, and it's got independent vol+tone controls for each pickup, but that's it as far as differences go. £165 - flamin 'eck!
4.
- Whats with all the bassists in Lincoln??
Very flat, Lincolnshire. Sound travels, especially at night. Step outdoors as darkness descends, and you can hear it: an eerie rumble, rolling across the open fields. 'Tis the fenland bassists, calling to one another....
5. Aahh, so you're that shadowy figure I've been glimpsing out of the corner of my eye. Nice raincoat.
6.
Their resonance is related to their length, not their shape, and is proportional to their length. A short pipe will have a high resonant frequency.
So I've got it completely back to front. It's a good thing I don't design speaker cabs, innit!
7. That's interesting, Bill. Just goes to show how instinct can lead to the wrong conclusion. I was thinking of things like organ pipes and suchlike, but I suppose the natural resonance of a very short, very fat cylinder like this would be virtually subsonic.
8. I'm no cab afficionado (I leave that to Messrs Claber and FitzMaurice!), but something instinctively tells me that a cylindrical enclosure is bound to have a very strong resonance at one frequency, causing it to be something of a booming one-note samba. At the end of the day, though, in the absence of any peoperly measured frequency response charts and specs, who can tell what they'll sound like? There's one thing: this idea is so simple that anyone could have a bash at making something similar and report back here. Then we'd know!
9. Hi Jammie, Just to clarify for those who may not know where you live: is that $549 or £549? I'm guessing dollars, but I have no idea about prices. How about a picture of Kenai sitting next to it? Just for scale, you understand. It's not that I'm into dogs or anything. Oh no.
10. For what it's worth: Pedulla: accent on the second syllable and rhyme with "duller". In order to be pronounced 'dyulla' or 'dyoola', it would need to have only one letter L Epifani: as Alex Claber says, it's Italian, so accent (and lengthen) the penultimate syllable: "Epi-FAAA-ni" Just think of it as something you'd order from an Italian restaurant. Behringer: with a soft 'G' - but I try not to say that one at all if I can help it.
11. Although it makes me feel as sick as a parrot, for those who might be tempted I thought I'd better let y'all know I've just seen one brand new on eBay for a mere £275 !! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dean-Stylist-Semi-ac...1QQcmdZViewItem
12. I'm in full accord with you, Pete, and you've provided some very enlightening info on the way that workplace control-freak systems operate. Stone me, I'm so glad I'm a freelance who works from home! If word filtering has to be implemented (which, in my opinion, it doesn't - but I've made that plain already), asterisks would be the only sensible form of substitution. Then, at least, our posts would stand less chance of turning into gibberish.
13.
Is an autocensor really necessary - personally I find having my self-expression tampered with, as if I was a 7 year old, or an American or something, massively more insulting than any "bad cusswords" people might use. I hate this sort of thing. Besides - they can always be circumvented. And how come it lets you get away with Scunthorpe? Jon.
Now that's interesting, Jon. So you can see the whole word unmolested, yes? On my screen it came out as S[flower of power]horpe!
14.
Its lost on me Ken. We're just trying to manage a forum here and its a tricky balance to achieve sometimes. Why not help us find the right balance, bearing in mind we have a range of experiences, backgrounds and levels of maturity?
I am trying to help you find the right balance - it's just that our respective concepts of what constitutes balance are at variance. Mine is rooted in the basic principle that it is the forum members themselves who should decide what they want to say and in what terms it should be expressed, with the moderators intervening only if threads degenerate into personal insult, if slanderous statements are made that could get the forum itself into legal hot water, or if prompted to do so by complaints of offence from fellow members. As you will be aware, I lodged a protest recently regarding an edit that was made to one of my own posts. SHG's reply explained that there is apparently a problem with some members being unable to access the site from workplace computers, because their employers' 'bad language' filters were being triggered to block the content, and consequently action was being taken to avoid this happening. This all sounds very fair and reasonable, until you analyze what it really means in practice, and witness what it has now resulted in: a situation where the moderators are experimenting with blanket bowdlerization of our discourse - with inevitably farcical results. I can only repeat here what I said to him: it's a sad state of affairs indeed when Basschat forum policy is effectively being dictated by the corporate prudery of organizations with which we have no connection and to whom we owe no duty at all.
15. ...and this morning, CK, your sloganizer signature has chosen to say "Easy Basschat". Now there's irony for you.
16. I've got one of them. Impulse buy. Thought it might come in handy. It hasn't.
17. First off, +1 to what paul just said. Lefty's EVO rackmount head is exactly the same amp as a current EVO II, only made with love in Essex.
i know what i'm getting with the SVT 3 but have no experiance with Ashdown.. does the Ashdown sound as good as Ampeg or better???
Bad question. Not a case of "as good" or "better", simply different. The ABM is a helluva good amp and can sound very valve-ish, but it's a different animal from an SVT. You need to try one and let your ears decide. While I'm at it... Welcome to Basschat, bj ! Whereabouts are you ? It's always worth adding your location to your profile info - that way, your fellow members can give useful advice. You never know: there may be a member who lives in your neck of the woods who could let you try out an ABM. If you're anywhere near me, you're welcome to try out one of my ABM combos. Just send me a PM
18.
4 weeks ago I blew out my knee
Now that's a clever trick. All I ever do is blow out my ass.
19. When I strap on my baby and get thunderous, it's a predominantly 60s affair: Many, many blues albums - but just recently it's been Howlin' Wolf: The London Sessions My Classic STAX collection. I'm a Sooouuul Man! Lots of different Beatles tracks. Always a pleasure to hang in with tuneful old Macca. Ditto The Small Faces. HUGE fun. Thank you, Ronnie! Most of Cream's output. Big respect to The Bruce. Bob Dylan: Bringin' It All Back Home Highway 61 Revisited Blonde on Blonde ...and a little bit of Reggae and Ska for good measure. ADDED LATER: Forgot Bowie and Hendrix!
20. Just to sound a negative note... If you're doing Denmark St., by all means pop your head into the Bass Cellar, but don't expect to get a welcome or anything approaching actual service. They're a bunch of idiots, and everything in there is vastly overpriced. Wunjo Guitars, OTOH, have a nice little assortment of new and 2nd hand bass gear, and are very friendly.
21. It's obvious that this is no impulse buy on your part. You've thought about it long and hard (actually, it's pretty clear you're thinking about little else from dawn to dusk, and who can blame you?), so - speaking as one who waited far too many years to get the bass I'd always wanted - I'd say BUY IT NOW and treasure it for life. The only precautionary things I'd add are: 1) Once you've got it, get it properly insured and 2) If you're at a University away from the family home, DON'T take her with you. I know you'll miss her, but a student house-share or hall of residence is no place to be storing £1200 worth of precious Warwick. If you want to practice at Uni, use the Fender. Finally, there's one last cast iron reason for making this purchase now, and this is the clincher. Unless you do, you'll be regretting it and fantasizing about it all through the rest of your time at Uni - when you should be concentrating on your studies. This is my personal opinion, but hey - what do I know?
22.
Messin about in boats
Interesting use for a white Fender Jazz...
23.

Oh sh*t, not again....hair caught in tuners. Hey man, don't move..... OW! I said DON'T... OW! OW! OW!
