PMT Southend-On-Sea charging £10 for a used cardboard box
woodster replied to peted's topic in General Discussion
I've just moved back to Southend after spending about 9 years in Norwich. As I grew up here I spent loads of time in PMT and bought a couple of basses, my first amp, and loads of strings in my time. The customer service used to be superb. I guess now that Honky Tonks music has closed they don't have any direct local competition. I won't be doing business with the Manager of that store again, I've dealt with the Sales Staff and they've been much better, but they don't seem to be authorised to sell cardboard boxes from their rubbish themselves Regarding the now closed Honky Tonks: Every knew that you only went in there to buy your first instrument if you knew nothing. After that you bought everything else from PMT
I grew up in God's golden acre and spent many an afternoon in Honky Tonk, browsing the racks. Monkey Business came along and blew them into the weeds though and they never recovered. IIRC, Monkey Business started in Romford, Essex and was connected in some way to the Trace Elliot organization, I think via a guy called Alan Morgan...? Having a shop in town that stocked Trace Elliot and Jaydee was a dream!!! -
He invested £75k for 30% of their entire back catalogue and future earnings. The program gives them more publicity than most bands, they already have some album sales under their belt, Peter Jones knows a load of top guys at Sony - it's a no brainer?
Isn't that how 80's pretty boys 'Bros' got ripped off.....? 30% off the top, take out the recoup and tax and you're left with pretty much naff all!
There seems to be a lack of manufacturers who sell aftermarket apparrell ie shirts etc, i mean id quite like a markbass T or some Lakland stuff or whatever, does anyone have any info on availability of this kind of stuff?
I know there's nothing available from Markbass at the moment as many bassists have asked the same question. I believe Marco and the team are working on some stuff currently but no announcements have been made yet.

I've bought twice from Bass Central in Florida ( www.basscentral.com ) Grasshopper and the guys there are really helpful and will guide you through the whole process and will even SLIGHTLY under-declare the value of your shipment to save you a few quid on the VAT. Even with the charges, my Stingray 5 was a few hundred quid cheaper that it would've been from the UK and was at my door 8 days after ordering.

I wouldn't really class a compressor as being a 'life changing' effect. It's more a subtle tool for ironing out the peaks and troughs of your sound and I never like to hear a really obvious compressor in action. I have an EBS that I'm really pleased with but I've heard the Demeter Compulators are very good too.

Am hoping to go to China with Yazz next year, maybe THEN i can get an endorsement deal, huh...? Hello....? Chris....? Laurence....? Stu.....? ANYONE....? lol

Mine came from the US as the exchange rate made it great value to buy from there. I really wanted a black cherry burst one but Grasshopper at Bass Central in the USA told me that they're not allowed to export current colours or the current LTD models. When I asked him what he COULD send me, the black and gold one leapt out. So I bought it. Thanks for the compliments y'all

Englebert Humperdink's 'Please Release me' always goes down well!!!

Thanks. At the time I bought it, I couldn't get hold of a natural one so I grabbed the only model i could find, an Olympic white one. I'm pretty glad i did now!!
No problem Mr W, I am hopefully getting a Conklin GT7 Fretless in the next couple of weeks, but your Progress is very very nice, and id rather have one over a Conklin any day ! Heeey, worth a try anyway, I wouldn't sell it if I were you though.. I must have a play on it one of these days!! Cheers! Take care mate!
You'd be more than welcome any time buddy, if we're ever at the same end of the country, look me up Chris

Hey Mr D.... I've thought about it on a few occasions but haven't been brave enough as I think I'd really miss it!! You'll be the first to know....

I have both a Progress 7 and a Jazz 5 and I wouldn't be without them. They are the most amazing instruments and I've never had any problems with the low B on either. Having said that, the 7 is 36" scale and the 5 is a 35" so maybe that's why. The Jazz has an East pre-amp so the sounds are so sweet and infinitely variable as we've all come to expect from John. The 7 has Overwater's own electronics and admittedlt the sounds aren't as flexible as the Jazz but it's such a great sounding bass, EQ tweeks are rarely required. If I had the cash, i would have an entire arsenal of Overwater basses.

Who on Basschat has the most expensive bass?
woodster replied to Jonny Walker's topic in General Discussion
Are we talking ACTUAL value or how much Her Majesty's Customs and Revenue thinks they cost....? -
+1 for the Overwater straps. I've got a comfort strap too but i think the OW's are better.
-
+1 for the Avalon U5, best £400 I've spent in a long time.

Absolutely. I bought a Deep Impact from the USA and it's powered by a Maplin wallwart.
