Yeah I quite fancied the white DJ4 which someone was selling just before I went for this one. Spoke with Jon and he says a lot will depend on what he finds underneath when he strips the finish off. I do like buckeye burl a lot. Only problem being that it is becoming a lot more common. I might go for some kind of spalted top maybe? I really don't know

Howdoo people I am sending my newly acquired Lakland DJ4 to Lord Jon of Shuker to have a refinish. Basically I am not a big fan of black finishes and this bass has one of the nicest necks and maple fretboards I have had the pleasure of playing, but just to give it that added wow factor, I wanna get the black stripped off and either a nice finish or a top putting on it. Anyone got any bright ideas? I'm not much kop when it comes to artistic visualisation
They work without a bassist. It's not a gimmick, and only a bass player would think that. I can't think of a single one of my mates who think of them as being a 'novelty' band. My friends know them as that band that writes those cracking tunes.
I said exactly the same thing about them before I started playing bass As far as I am concerned the tunes are crap. But I appreciate that people have their own tastes and I don't dismiss anybodies choice of music for one second, I genuinely feel they are nothing more than second rate nonsense. And I suspect the reason your mates all feel that way about them as well is because naturally you would defend something you believe in. I ain't trying to tell you that you are wrong, just that I strongly disagree And what's with all the 5 string diss? What about 5 strings with a C instead of a B? Are they excused?

4 string basses are never going to become obsolete. Too many people still use them and pretty much nobody starts out playing bass with anything other than a 4 string. Likewise in response to the comment above, 5 strings will never become the standard, but the comparisons used are not particularly good - "'Cookie monster' vocals detuned Nu/Rap metal tripe" - Now I see what is being said here, but having once been a 5 string user in a metal band, it is all about how you play the thing and how it fits in the context of the music which is true to any style and any bass be it 4 string, 5, 6 or people who go beyond that! Ask Dood if he could do half the stuff he does on a 4.......I'm sure he spent all that money on a 7 string for a reason In my eyes, very little will change from where it is now. As for bands like The White Stripes, I am not a fan at all and I would suggest a big reason they have kept themselves as a 2 piece is for the commercial value that is attached to novelty factors. If they are not already dying out then they start to soon. And lets face it, they have hardly spawned a whole breed of bassless bands have they? And when you watch a band live, how empty does it sound if the bassist happens to drop out or have technical problems on stage? We are not in any danger whatsoever.

BigRedX - I would agree on the neck dive thing. The guitar I had didn't balance at all so the bass is almost certain to do that unless they have made the body out of lead.

I just realised I used the word "wicked" twice in the same sentence. That is far from wicked.

I love the SVT3 pro. I like the ampeg beef, but don't like too much grit on my tone and the SVT3 does a cracking clean tone. It's like a compromise between an SVT2 and a good clean amp to my ears.

Ah yea all the Marshall gear.... Well had the footswitch on my mates Framus been working properly I would have been using that to deafen half of Cumbria. Not my band I am playing in in that pic - but yes they do like their marshall gear. It all sounds good together though! And the VBA400 is a MONSTER!!!
