1. Very nice sounding and playing bass, much talked about on here and on TalkBass, I'm selling mine as I'm after the VMJ. Very good condition, one small little scratch on one of the horns, about 4mm long, only noticeable on close inspection. Used mainly for bedroom playing, only really taken out of the house 3 times max. Asking for £150, will include the gig bag. I'm reluctant to ship as I don't really like shipping basses, I'm located in Wigan and I'm happy for people to come and try it before hand, or I'll be willing to drive a little way.
2. At the risk of looking like I'm trying to steal someones sound, perhaps a tone similar to this video: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ANlkDwF3P-o&...feature=related Just a nice round tone and not too bassy.
3. I'm hoping to change from my Zoom to just 2-4 pedals that will give me "my sound" no matter what amp I plug in to. Don't get me wrong, the Zoom is a great pedal, but I only need one sound. I was wondering what 3 or 4 pedals should I be looking at to give me a good sound. I'm guessing a compressor/limiter to be one of them, and then presumably some form of DI box (MXR, SansAmp etc) at the end. I was just hoping I could get a couple of ideas/recommendations and then go from there! I will be selling my basses and Zoom in the coming weeks (hopefully) and getting myself a Squier VMJ after deciding to get back to basics and not go for a 6 string that I asked about in another thread. Thanks for any help!
4.
Buy one if you feel like it,but i dont really think 6 string bass has much point to it unless you are a big fat monster session dude playing behind RnB singers, and it wont get you any more chicks,to many strings and you can lose sight of the fact you are supposed to be holding down a bottom end groove.Saying that there are some good players that use 6 string basses, try it maybe it will be your thing.

I'm slowly growing used to the idea of a 6'er even though I'm on my third. I don't like the extra wide fingerboard but I do like the additional freedom the extra C string gives me. I can even attempt to play chords! I'm far from being any kind of session monster.
See the thing is, I've played a couple of 6s, and I actually felt really comfortable with it. I don't plan on being a solo bassist/session player/crazy sounds kinda bassist, but I plan on having "my bass" as such (monogamy ftw!), and for me to have the option of the 6th string would be nice. Also, having just seen a couple of tasty pictures of the Spector Legend 6 Classic in Bubinga finish, wow, major GAS attack. It's far out of my price range, but I may end up selling my laptop on yet so that would bring me a lot closer. I hate GAS!
5.
Stick to a 5 string.
Any particular reason?
6. At the moment I have a Squier Deluxe Jazz V, and I think it's a cracking bass, especially for the money, but I'm hoping to get myself a 6 string, preferably in the not too distant future. Tone wise, I could do with the bass that can give a bit of variety, but I think mainly I'm after a nice smooth but punchy finger tone. I quite like Mike Kroegers tone, also Tye Zamora from Alien Ant Farm. I've just auditioned for a band, it's more of a slower, ballad kind of band, but with a couple of more upbeat songs. I imagine I'd be selling on the Squier, but being a student, I really can't stretch much....so would it be possible to find myself a decent 6 string for around £200-£250 (possibly £300 at a stretch)?
7. I agree with the lack of stuff in the Liverpool Dawson's, but when I went to the Manchester store to buy my Squier Deluxe Jazz V they were very helpful, got me a stool, lead and Trace combo after I asked "Would it be possible for me to try this Squier?". Then I'd finished and the same guy took through the rest of the sale with me, with some light hearted banter, and how much the staff and a few of his friends liked the bass for the money (plus they had it on sale at £199.99). Not a complaint from me!
8. I think I'd give anything to be the bassist in Evanescence from about 54 seconds into this video.
9. Excellent review mate. Do you have any news on whether you'll be able to review anymore Vintage gear? I've had Vintage guitars and even the fretted version of the fretless you had (I still have mine), and I've always been pleasantly surprised. I do hope they bring a 5 string out, I may get in a load of extra hours at work just to go towards it!
10.
I'd be tempted to get the band together first and fit the kit around it. Chances are, you won't need anything like a £1k rig!

hmmmmmmmmmmmm +1
As I (think I) mentioned in the original post, I wont be ready to buy 'til the end of September or October so I imagine it'll be a few weeks or so into the course so I'll hopefully have an idea as to what I'll need. Definitely go for the GK head though, I've heard nothing but good things on both here and TB.
11.
Looks like a cool rig. If you buy it all new from somewhere, especially the same shop, then you should ask them to knock some money off. Get them to do the head + cabs for a flat £900 - that'd save you the cost of the cables which you could then get from OBBM.
Could possibly do so. I've just been toying with the idea of getting an GK 410RBX cab instead of the two Harkte cabs but I'm not sure yet. If I did, the GK comes with the cable for the bi-amp feature, so I wouldn't need any extra cables. I'm living at home while at Uni so storage isn't an issue at all! P.S. The kind of band I'll be in will need a fair bit of oomph bass amp wise. (Listen to a band called A Wilhelm Scream if you haven't already). I know me and a guitarist mate are pretty much decided on starting a band, and of a similar genre to our old band, and we didn't exactly play quietly!
12. In which case it'd be more like: Gallien Kruger 1001RB-II £513.65 Harkte 2.5XL £210.95 Harkte 2.5XL £210.95 Cables £31.50 £967.05 And of course, all this is brand new. Could be quite possible to get some second hand.
13. After a bit of reading etc, and price research, I've come up with this list: Gallien Kruger 700RB-II £399.00 Harkte 2.5XL £210.95 Harkte 2.5XL £210.95 Stagg 4U Rack £59.00 Behringer MDX2600 Composer XL £85.00 Cables £52.00 (2xSpeakon + 2xpatch cables, from OBBM) Total: £1,016.90
14. Worth the extra £100 or so for the 1001RB or would the 700RB be sufficient? Thomann currently have the Hartke 4.5XL for under £300 and the 1001RB-II is £513. Also as a quick plus, any recommendations for a rackmount compressor?
15.
The DI outs on the GK heads are pretty good too, btw.
Good, as I imagine it'll get used a lot! Would using the GK through Hartke cabs be detrimental or could it work quite well (I'm well aware you can't use the HMS, and that the amp runs in 'full range' mode)?
16. How would a GK head with Hartke cabs sound? Perhaps the 700RB-II through a 4.5XL? I could get both new for around £600.
17.
Gallien-Krueger 700RB-II and 2 GK Neo 112's. Sorted. Why do you need seperate power amps and preamps? Just more stuff to lug around.
Typically theres just this very rig (with only one cab) in the FS section, and I can't buy it yet! Argh. Looks like a good suggestion, after a quick search it seems the GK's are good bump for the money. Would probably have to go second hand for at least the cabs, as buying it all new comes over budget! Damn timing!
18. Like the look of the 4.5XL! So far idea is DHA VT2 > Behringer Power amp > Hartke 4.5XL + 4U case and cables etc. Seems to come in under budget!
19. Ive only just realised that I keep mentioning the tuner...I have one on my Zoom pedal! Any recommendations on 210 cabs? Preferably ones where I could get 2 for around £300/£400, or may even go for a 410, again, same price (or cheaper)!
20. Thanks again for the smaller cab recommendations. I guess it'd be slightly easier on the pocket too! With regards to weight/size, I'm honestly not to fussed, as at only 19 years old, I still have plenty of lifting in me. The idea of having two 2x10" seems a good idea, as I can use one or both then, depending on how I need it!
21. Thanks for the suggestions! As I say, I'm happy to buy second hand, but it'll be around the end of September/October when I'll be looking at buying, so I can't really look too much into s/h just yet. If I were to get a 410 + 115 rig, would it be worth getting a crossover for use with a stereo power amp? Split the lows to the 115 and the rest through the 410?
22. I guess I should also mention that Im starting from scratch, so I'll need a 4u/6u rack, all the cables etc included!
23. Hey guys. I'm off to Uni in Sept, doing a course in Sound Engineering, and hoping to meet a few new musicians and get a band together. One problem....I don't have an amp! So I need to get one sorted....and I'm looking to spend, at the very most £900 - £1k. Ideal set up would be a rack with tuner, pre-amp & power amp, plus two cabs, I imagine 1x15 + 2x10 or 4x10. I've got my eye on a DHA VT2 Rackmount pre-amp...I play a lot of punk etc and valve gritiness is really what I'd be after. Although I'd need quite a clean tone sometimes for other applications (covering a wide range of genres on the course), so perhaps I'd have to ask Dave to see if he'd be able to exhange one of the valves for a lower gain one? Also with regard to cabs, I'm happy to go second hand (providing I can get a good deal etc) So, the basic question...can it be done? I'm open to all suggestions! Cheers guys, Karl.
24. I'm very happy with my Squier Deluxe Jazz V. Very happy. It makes the sound I want and I love playing it. I see no need to even consider another bass, let alone a "brand" bass.
25. As BNT said, I always imagined that a click track would be run through the monitors, and the actual backing track out through the PA. I have no experience in the matter, but I have thought about this a few times and it seems a good solution.
