Nice try For the purpose of seeing if it powers up would any speaker be OK to use to create a load?

I have an old 60's Selmer valve head that was given to me many years ago and I have never turned it on, I'm curious to see if it works but I seem to remember that it's not a good idea to turn valve amps on without having a speaker attached, is this correct? I wanted to try out a chorus pedal again not owned one since the 80's so I bought one of these MXR Stereo Chorus pedals recently [url="http://www.jimdunlop.com/index.php?page=products/pip&id=254"]http://www.jimdunlop.com/index.php?page=pr.../pip&id=254[/url] works well on bass as it has a switch that stops the effect working on the low notes just the mid and high ones, it also has a tone control for fine tuning. A great pedal but I have to say I doubt I'll ever use it!
