2.
Hey, I'm sure i replied to your pm that you sent me? The finish is great, its only a gloss but absolutely no sign of overspray and no cracks or lines anywhere. It could be worth giving Molan a pm as he has had this bass ands its 4 string brother so will be able to tell you what the pair were like. Jake
Forgive me, now you mention it you did reply. Thanks again Jake Dave
3. I have come up with a design for a bespoke neck plate for my project bass and I'm on the look out for someone to make it for me out of stainless steel, I found one guy preparred to make it but it takes him a week to reply to each e-mail so it could be Christmas before he actually made it! Any metal workers able to help out or recommendations appreciated. Dave
4. Slightly off topic but how do you rate the finish on your Siggery? I ask because I have had a reasonably priced quote from Martin to re-finish a body for me. Cheers R.
5. Blimey December and Jan have been very hectic work wise so this project has been a bit overlooked but yesterday my Dad was visiting and we managed to file the nut down to an acceptable level, fix the tuners on properly, ad the string retainer and countersink some holes in the body for the neck screw bushes.
6. Fantastic looking amp, it also has some of the things missing from my LM11 like 2 Speakon outs and an all important mute switch. oh and it has even less knobs
7.
1. Are Aguilar cabs more suited to producing the more rounded vintage type sounds than the EBS Neo cabs ? I suspect this is the case, but I'd like to hear the thoughts of others that have already walked this path. There's got to be a few out there.
I had an EBS Neo 212 for quite a while it was a great cab but I found it quite agressive with a very modern sound with lots on mids, I now have a pair of GS112NT's and they have as you say a more rounded vintage sound, I love 'em. I use a LM11 but would love to try them with a Aggie amp one day. R.
8.
Just one word about resprays. By all means take a recommendation, but what one shop allow as acceptable, another will not. I guess that is what you pay your money for. The trick is knowing what that standard is and how much you are willing to pay for it.
Wise words, refinishing is a bit of a mind field I'm finding. the last thing I want to do is ruin the whole project with a cheap spray job but neither do I want to pay top dollar when it could have been done just as well for half the price. it's turning into the hardest decision I have had to make so far! Cheers R.
9. I have just taken a ruler to my new neck and my Lakland, it's a boring fact but pretty important to me, at the 7th fret my new neck is 55mm the Lakland is 60mm. One of the main reasons for this build was to end up with a narrower necked 5 string with a small string spacing, I'm pretty chuffed so far.
10.
arty Having seen a couple of Marty's basses they look really nice and of a good quality. I know Molan used to have a Siggery so perhaps PM him and ask Great build thread, can't wait to see it finished
Thanks for the kind words and head up, I'll PM Molan.
11.
http://www.mcintyreguitars.com/about.htm
Thanks for the link. I got a quote today from Marty Siggery of £150 to spray the body which I thought was a good price but I have no idea what the quality of his work is like. I have attached the bridge and contol plate today, the plate isn't wired up though yet.
12. Has anyone used www.siggeryguitars.co.uk I have had a reasonably priced quote from Marty to spray the body of my Jazz Bass, is he any good? R.
13. I haven't heard of Chris Mcintyre do you have any more info or contact details? Cheers
14. I filled the bridge and control plate screw holes in the body today and sanded a bit of the varnish off at the end of the neck pocket to see if it would be possible for me to remove it all before sending the body for a refinish, I could only get fine (240) sand paper at Homebase not extra fine but it removed the varnish pretty quickly and feels quite smooth so I think a few hours of elbow grease should be enough to get it back to bare wood.
15.
Thanks, Rumple. I shall most likely be dropping the good Doctor a line in the New Year, after I have worked out whether I want EMGs or something more vintage. I'm completely torn between the EMG 40P (with that excellent P growl) and old-school Jazz. What made you go for the Nordstrands?
Are you going to building a 4 or 5 string? I think a P J combination could be quite good on a 4, I like the idea of a Jazz BAss with a P pup in the neck position. I'm tempted to go that route with a fretless 4 build. I'll be honest and it was the look of those pick ups I was attracted to at first but they have a great reputation, they do about 3 variations and hopefully the Big Splits will give me the tone I want. they are a pretty standard Bart size so I can swop them out or even add active controls if they don't suit me.
16. I drank all the port so there are no picks of that only the neck! I quickly attached the tuners to the neck before taking the snaps, I have done a close up of the end so you can see the slight overhang of the fretboard. I placed the neck into the pocket on the body to show a rough idea of how it will eventually look, I'm going to nip to B&Q tomorrow to get some wood filler so I can relocated the bridge and control plate screws. I have decided to definately get the body refinished so I'm on the look out for someone to do that over the next few weeks.
17.
Nice. What is the body like now that it has been routed for the new pickups? Warmoth, for example, will not do EMG 40-size neck pickups (EMG 40s are 102x38mm) on their top-routed bodies. How big are those pickups?
Hi, The pups are Bart sizes and I make then 30mm x 105mm, I guess you could get a Warmouth body without the pick up routing and get it done over here ot in Sweden? but it would probably be easier to get someone like Howard or Lawrence to make you exactly what you want.
18. The neck arrived Christmas Eve! I'll take a couple of snaps of the body and neck sitting together with a glass of port later on
19.
It's funny, whenever I read these threads, the common theme seems to be "I don't need the lower notes". It's not just about the lower notes, it's about increasing the ease of reaching notes without shooting off down the fretboard... e.g. the availability of hitting an F on the B at the 6th fret rather than going down to the 1st fret on the E string. As stated, it also makes transposition on the fly a hell of a lot easier.
+1 My covers band drop and raise the tuning of a song to suit our singer and on a four string this would be a nightmare but that 5th string comes in very handy. if I was in a band playing original material again a 4 string Jazz would be just the ticket.
20. Bloody snow, still no sign of the neck there was a moment of excitment today when a Parcelforce lorry made it down the street to the house but it soon faded when I saw the guy unloading a very square box, turned out to be some picture frames ordered as a Christmas pressie. Q: thinking ahead a bit is there any decent refinishers close to South London? Sims maybe?
21. The neck is in transit from France to Sarf london sans the nut which will follow later:)
22. Not much has happened with the body recently but the neck is nearly done and is looking great, I'm hoping to have it here by Christmas I can then get on with putting it all together. The fretboard has a slight overhang to take 21 frets and is squared off so I know I'm going to have to get a new scratchplate made or have the one on there amended.
