8. Wayne, Your self-painted basses look very good. As you said you seem to have a thing for it which works in your favour I guess. My advice would be to do it and here's why : 1. As you said you enjoy it which means that you will take care of the instrument and finish it to the best of your own abilities. 2. You have a little bit of experience doing your own basses, turned out good so you should have some confidence in doing up someone's baby. 3. You can quite possibly offer a very good VFM service to those people who just want to change the colour on their low value instrument but don't want to pay £350 odd to a luthier. (Me for example) 4. If you get a few jobs in which will require you to order biger amounts of paint than you could get a trade account with paint suppliers so you can get the materials cheaper than your average paint shop which in effect means that the real cost of a job will be slightly lower. 5. You would only offer simple paint jobs, no flip paints, mirror tops etc. This will pretty much set your price in a different bracket than other options available there. 6. You could offer discount to those people who are prepared to do some work like sanding the body before sending it out to you etc. (Me for example) I could probably go on, but you can turn it around to your advantage and as many of the guys said you will have a market for it, the more you will do of painting the bodies etc. the more experience you will get which will greatly reduce the time it will take you to do a body. One thing I would suggest regardless of your decision is to probably write some sort of a guide that can be made sticky by mods in the repair section. I believe that many people do not realise just how much work has to be put in to achieving a good finish on a bass, even when it's just a solid colour and especially when it is a re-finish. In the end your not doing what this guys does for example : Click Me Cheers Jack
9.
I found the Mono for £99 at on piano covers online, just emailed them to check the delivery costs.
Result Trust me you will not regret getting the Mono. Cheers Jack
10. I have the Mono bag and can tell you that it is an excellent bag! The way I was looking at it is well protected and room for all the bits and pieces! Mono fits the bill perfectly, it's well made and has 3 years warranty. They are in the higher price bracket but if someone wants to save £30 odd on the bag for a bass that's worth over £1000 than they might as well buy a Stagg gig bag! Just my 2p worth Cheers Jack
11. What is the purpose of a D-tuner if you have a 5 string?
12. The GK heads give you great tonal range, You can get tones suitable for any kind of music and if you set it up properly it's ears heaven IMHO. They have tones of headroom as well as power, you can drive 2 cabs but if you'd go for a BF BigOne you wouldn't need two of them based on my experience with the Compact! If you liked your TE cabs than I think that you wouldn't like the BareFaced on the beggining because they give you much cleaner sound without all the distortion that Trace would give you. Practice place I use provides Trace backline and I hate it but it's just my point of view. You will have some trying out to do since there's loads of cabs and heads you can try. If you're ever in London you are welcome to come and try out my rig. Cheers Jack
13. Well I use Barefaced Compact paired with GK 1001RBII. I have played gigs with it in many different venues and never had a problem with hearing myself. I'm 6'7" so not on the smaller side and since the Compact is smaller tham the BigOne I assume you would not have a problem hearing your bass on the stage! For what you say I would also recommend GK heads. IMHO they are more versatile than some of the MarkBass, GenzBenz or whatever people will soon say you should get! Best of luck with finding your gear! This is the place to get the best deals on some S/H stuff as well as almost brand new bits and pieces! Cheers Jack
14.
A thumb rest can be limiting because in practice you may not always want to play in the same position. Sometimes you'll want near the bridge, other times up over the end of the fingerboard, someitmes in between. So better, IMHO, to get used to working without a thumb rest.
Or you can always add a ramp
15. I know some of you are using the Power Bank from maplin http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=31292 If you do you might want to check what sort of fuse was fitted in the plug. The plug itself says it should have 13A but yesterday when the unit that my guitarist uses has packed up we found a 5A fuse in it. Not a major problem but if it says 13A on the plug you would imagine the company is going to follow their own recommendations ? Cheers Jack
16. Hi guys, Does anyone know if basschat members get any discount at Bass Direct ? Cheers Jack
