1. 26 Y/O based in South London 10 years experience playing many styles. Looking to play funk/soul/ rhythm and blues/ reggae. Good grooves etc. Absolutely no interest in indie/rock/NME/haircut bands.
2. Q: What's the only thing in the whole world more boring than U2? A: A Basschat thread about U2. Step aside people, your work here is done. Nothing to see...
3. I like to disturb the local wildlife when I play and make people's teeth itch. I want my bass to sound like tinfoil. Any advice?
4.
Nice one guys.... trashing Pram's sale thread. Nice one......
I agree. This is a poor show.
5. I played the Fiddlers Elbow a few years ago. We had an excellent sound engineer, but I think the promotor was a bit flaky and all the othe bands pulled out. Since this is the only time I've ever been there, I'd take it with a pinch of salt. House engineer: Excellent Typical audience numbers: We played to our mates and the local drunkards! Quality of billing: Terrible, all the other bands pulled out! Vibe: Acceptable Stage sound/monitor mixes: Excellent House backline quality: Not sure, we used our own. Tricks to get industry people down there : Trendy haircuts, tight jeans and don't tune your instruments!
6.
10/10 for bravery, 9/10 for the bass line, 7/10 for the drumming and 2/10 for the vocals Was there a very drunk keyboard player in there somewhere also?
Yeah, very drunk keyboard player. Auld Lang Syne was just drunken key-mashing and ended in total disarray!
7. 1) Play open strings 2) Fret all notes up and down neck 3) Check what the knobs do 4) How does it sound/feel? (you should know by now!) Buy it... or not. 5) Slap the living sh*t out of it to make sure the staff know how god damn funky you are and that you are far too talented for an English A-level (for example).
8. Yep. He's a proper good bassist - absolutely no mug! Saw Chaz + Dave a few years ago, amazing stuff. The drummer (who must be about 80) insisted on using only 1 mic for his whole kit - but f*** did it sound good - brilliant band.
9. Good stuff. If it were on the radio I think the 48 second breakdown from 2.20 to 3.08 could be considered too long(although it would be fine in the sun at Glastonbury). I'm no expert on songwriting, I just like short songs. Good to see the chorus out in under 60 seconds! Not my thing at all, but a good band is a good band and this is a good band!
10. Cheers guys. I've just this second sold my car, so shall be taking him up on the offer. Wonderful
11. I've got a chance to get a Little Mark II for £380 from a mate. I know it's in mint condition, is about 2 years old and has hardly ever been used. Does £380 sound about fair? They don't seem to pop up for sale that often so I'm not sure what they go for. Cheers
12. A good few pints in on new years eve and me and the drummer give Rhythm Stick a bash. Here ya go!
13. Maybe he was having a bad week. I'll try him again next time! Ta
14. I tried to get my bass set up by him a few months ago as he's only based down the road and has a great reputation. I found him absolutely impossible to get hold of, never picked his phone up and when we did arrange a time for the setup he wasn't there. Maybe that was just me
15.
Yet a friend who teaches guitar and bass, regularly moans about the inability of his students to stick at the instrument through the basic 'pain' stage of scales and building up their hand strength, and their attention span seems so short too. He gets paid irrepective of course, but his main beef is that so many of them don't do any work between lessons, the progress is painful for both he and the kids, and they seem to want to be Jaco, without doing any work! He also finds plenty of kids, guitar players particularly, who can't pick up anything by listening, and have no idea where to start unless it's Tab, and whilst they can play any amount of widdly widdly solos, have no idea how to play chords and the rhythm guitar parts.
Yep. Does my head in trying to teach kids who: a) can't sit up straight to play properly b ) don't know a major scale c) can't play in time and still ask you to teach them some ridiculous slap line at 40,000 bpm.
16. When I was at uni in Oxford I had lessons off a guy called Domonic Lash. Excellent teacher. Plays upright and electric. Teaches jazz, reading etc. Would definitely recommend him. He used to live off Cowley Road. Don't have a number for him, but he was very good. Here's his myspace. http://www.myspace.com/dominiclash
17. Cheers, yeah it was great fun doing the gig. Unfortunately all the backing singers are taken... by me
18. I listened all of this whilst reading the paper yesterday afternoon. Lovely stuff!
19.
Great stuff. An 11 piece band sounds a logistical nightmare though. Do you all rehearse together or in smaller groups?
Cheers. Yep it is a bloody nightmare. We tended to sort out structures with just the main core of the band (drums, bass, guitar and lead vox), then get backing vox and horns along at separate rehearsals. We got all 11 of us together in a room for the first time on the day of the gig. Lots of conflicts of interests with other gigs, money, etc etc. I think it was worth it in the end!
