I always imagined 'General Bass Discussion' to be about music chat more generally, as it would probably have a bass heavy slant being on a bass forum...
That makes sense. Any chance we could have the title changed to 'General bass & music discussion'?
Well, it's slightly louder than my Marshall B65 combo (65 watts) at the point where it becomes unusable due to the 'clicking'. I know that perceived volume as a function of watts depends on many factors, but all the same I would have expected significantly more volume from 250 watts (its stand alone/8 ohm rating) than from 65 Watts, and at over £500 I would expect it to deliver. From memory I suspect that a Roland Cube100/120 would be significantly louder. I really hope that it is faulty and that it comes back delivering the promise as I fundamentally like the unit, and it is compact. If this one isn't faulty and this is just how they are then this isn't the right combo for me and (IMHO) its not worth £515. I'll let you all know what transpires, though I guess that will now be in the New Year. Thanks for your interest folks. The Count.
With the gains set to the above, mine is very loud, punchy and solid (within the limits of a box that size). Way more than I'd expect from another 65w combo. Something to try... when you're plugged in at the amp, give the plug a firm wiggle, enough to give what's going on on the other side a nudge. I had a problem with mine after I accidentally gave the jack a knock.. basically, it did something resulting in the output dropping, and the signal went lifeless, clicky and buzzy. Jiggling it around lined it all up again inside, fixing the problem. I took it to a tech who tightened it all up inside to stop it happening again.
No argument there. I've not found anyone who says that it isn't. But when one goes into a pub and pays for a pint one expects to get a pint, not ten ounces, no matter how good it tastes.
I actually didn't like it... it's 'loud', but at the expense of what I look for in a bass head.

Nice! Is that a flamey neck, or is it a trick of the light?

I get by by working my lunch and leaving early, or taking half days. it's rare that I can't get away when I need to, but if it happens I'll just miss the soundcheck. Also, they gave me six weeks' unpaid leave a few years ago to go on tour. I was grateful for that.

Cool... that's good to know. All I would add is.. if I set the input gain to the clipping threshold, and the master to 10 o'clock, it would be LOUD...! Is yours loud, too?
-
...can you force the input clip light on by cranking the input gain?
-
Hmm... mine doesn't do it...
The bass tech in PMT told me that the power amp section is actually designed by Bang and Olufsen.
AFAIK, most lightweight bass amps use the same module.
about sums up my feelings on the subject, if your bass keeps breaking then there's something fundamentally wrong with the bass
It doesn't need to *keep* breaking. Once will be enough...
I am certainly intrigued by this little EBS amp though.
Yeah.. good on them for being honest about the rating.
I thought that the RH450 was 450 watts ? Am I missing something ?
Yeah. A US magazine bench tested it, and it only puts out 236w. They do some magic doohickery to it that makes it sound as loud as a 450w amp (killing the tone and dynamics in the process IMO). Lots on Talkbass and a couple of threads on Basschat. (Apologies to the OP for the hijack)

It certainly is, Mr. Mysterious BC Wizard!
If push really came to shove, most bands can play on without a bass*... just as much as I could do without this dumb "we're right and you lot are unprofessional" thread popping up in my in-box all the bloody time. They'd still get paid and more to the point most punters probably wouldn't even notice. *set re-order may be require
There's an 'unfollow this topic' button at the top of the page. I'd feel like a plank sitting in the dressing room or out in the audience while the band soldiered on without me, just I 'cos couldn't be arsed to pick two basses up (usual exceptions apply). But, we're all different.
But then I'm into the realms of buying a spare bass
On most of my previous posts, I've stressed that what I say only applies to people who have more than one bass. My comments are aimed at those who have more than one, but can't be arsed to carry a spare with them to a gig.
As it is I'm in an originals band, usually playing with two or three other bands on the bill, for little-to-no money and more-often-than-not involving a 50-100 mile round trip. So car pooling is the order of the day. If I wanted to bring a spare bass, the guitarist would want his spare amp rig, the singer would want to bring his wireless mic rack, the drummer would want his own stool etc etc. Everyone's band's circumstances are different.
Obviously, given that you're not going to struggle to borrow another if your bass dies, none of this is really an issue for you. it goes without saying, I think.
I still maintain though that a quality instrument, well maintained (I do my own set-ups, but I still like to get my bass checked by a luthier every now and then because he sees issues I don't) and played with good technique is very unlikely to break.
Try telling that to my pickup that died mid-song, or the circuit that popped in the active bass I used to own...! It's like taking out insurance. You probably won't need it, but if you do have to call on it, you'll be thankful.
I'm just as likely to be unable to play at short notice due to illness or injury as I am to having my bass break. Should I have a dep ready on stand-by just in case?
You're missing the point. At the risk of repeating myself:
Again, to go back to the point I'm trying to make: Bringing a spare bass to a gig is such a simple sacrifice to make for such huge potential benefit.
-
To have to be an insurmountable failure, it could only be one of those three box (powered mixer, two cabs) systems. Perfectly practical and affordable for a band to carry a spare.
...but then you're getting into the realms of buying a larger car to fit everything in. Again, to go back to the point I'm trying to make: Bringing a spare bass to a gig is such a simple sacrifice to make for such huge potential benefit. I really don't know how else to say it.
-
I'm not sure the paying audience would see it that way. Sounds like you're happy to hide behind a big failure where everyone shares the "blame" but not a small one for which you would get all the blame. I'm not criticising that position and can fully understand it. I just don't think it's consistent when the end result is a cancelled gig whatever the the cause.
I'm kind-of referring to the promoter and fellow band members. There's literally nothing anyone could do about an insurmountable PA failure, as it's generally not practical to carry a spare. But... cancelling a gig because the bass player couldn't be bothered to pick up their spare bass? They'd deserve a kick up the arse from the rest of the band, promoter and audience for that stroke of laziness.
