In the verse it is, and in the chorus it's that deep in the mix it's hard to tell... but I definitely hear it in the intro and in the bass break after the first chorus.
Had a look/listen at the video on Youtube - hard to tell, mostly because The Edge is also playing that riff with a lot of distortion on it - bass does sound as if it's running clean-ish for most of the song, maybe with a smidge of grit on it mixed with the dry signal. Overall, not a great U2 song - too much like Queens of the Stone Age, and not in a good way :/ Just my $0.02 HTH, Ian
How about Trevor Burton on Trent. Slightly off topic, theres a housing estate in Birmingham that used to be an aerodrome, where thr roads are named after aircraft etc. Apparently theres a Douglas Bader Walk there...
I heard something similar - the Douglas Bader public house - named after the legless wartime hero (good man!!!) I don't mind where I live - 'cos I can get to work on the Sadowsky Metro For weekends, a trip to the US West Coast (Sandberg, California), you know the place, just follow Fender Highway One. Watch out for the potholes - road's a little worn in places. Ian

Looks like I'm going to be away bang in the middle of that weekend - literally going to be passing the front door twice over a long weekend No worries, catch up with some of you at the SE bash the following weekend. Have a good one Laterz, Ian

Also having major GAS I've pared my list down a bit, but this is fairly good for now Cort GB34A in CAR (see this thread) ACG Recurve 4 Fretless (mostly down to BottomEndian's build thread ) - gotta have the single triple-coil pickup, two-band EQ and coil tapping RIM Custom Jazz - JJ pickup arrangement, Audere JZ3B preamp (Vol/Vol/2EQ stacked tone) Sandberg California JM4 (in CAR or LPB) Stingray 4H 2EQ/3EQ Maybe room for a 5'er in there somewhere Waterstone 12-string bass (after seeing the bassist for Clatter use on on her Youtube videos) Markbass 108HR? Sell the EBS gear and go Neo, Barefaced Compact/Midget combo or Super 12T Think that'll do for now
Yer thinking about it thats probably what the A in GB34A stands for (doh!). As i said though great bass, nice hardware (hipshot tuners, locking jack) just didnt like the electronics.
Thanks!! Yep, definitely an active bass (or so Google tells me). One to try out then Bass Merchant has them for a not-unreasonable sum, so may have to plan a trip to Colchester this side of Xmas Sorted Ian
The neck on the GB74 I had was possibly the most comfy I've played. Really nice bass just didn't really like the electronics. Isn't the GB34 passive though?
Re: neck. Yep, that's pretty much how I remember it. Re: passive/active, you know I'm not sure, I'd just assumed it was active, what with the stacked tone controls etc. I'm happy to be proved wrong, although I am looking for an active bass since both my current basses are passive - it would be nice to have something with some 'ooomph'. I'll have a Google and find out... Ta, Ian
Excellent basses, but be warned they have quite a wide, flat neck that may or may not be to your taste! Cheers, James
Found I got on OK with the Cort I have tried - is it Jazz-neck flat 'n' wide? My Squier P-Special has a shallow Jazz-style neck on it, quite thin really, narrower than a P, which I prefer to a P-style 'baseball bat' neck. Dunno, just feels fast and more fluid to me. Couldn't get on at all with the neck on my Ibanez ATK - that was a real beastie (but that was a 5'er). Another plus point is the Vol/Blend/Stacked tone arrangement - does anyone know if there's an option to have coil tapping/switching of the MM pickup on this model? Ian
-
Hi chaps Have been GAS'ing for a bass that can do the Jazz bass and Stingray/MM-style in one package - can't afford a Sandberg Cali JM4 or a StingRay HS at the moment (although they're both on my 'must audition' list!). Having had a brief noodle on a Cort GB74A at the London 'bash a few months ago, I've started looking at budget options as well. One idea was to get a cheap-ish Jazz bass and rout out an MM pickup in place of the bridge pickup, but for less money, I could get me one of these (Cort GB34A). Good idea, or barking up the wrong tree? Ian
Thanks Ian, All very good points. Lots of people have commented on the over-wet reverb, and I am only too acutely aware of the timing issues! We will certainly try to take these on board with the mixing/mastering process. We have been talking about our gig schedule. We have had quite a break over the last few months - mainly related to my life being in turmoil for all sorts of (mostly good) reasons - but we will certainly try to get at least 1 if not 2 gigs in before the end of the year. I will try to remember to post back to this thread when we have a date set. Thanks for listening! James
No worries - you've all done a great job there already with the raw material. I've heard some of my playing played back to me, and I'm shocked at how badly I've kept in time, so I know the feeling - don't beat yourself up too much! Re: gigs - cool, man, look forward to it - checked out your Myspace page as well. Nice HTH, Ian
Cheers guys, I'm really looking forward to receiving them now. Have spent the last hour reading stuff on TB and the consensus seems all good from what i have read so far. I'll update/review when i've got them put in my jazz if anyones interested?.
Please do! I'm interested in these pickups as well - have a couple of projects I'd like to use them on HTH, Ian
Anyone have a GK MB2-500 or MB Fusion they can bring along for me to try out?
Yep - I'm bringing my MB500 with me - you're more than welcome to have a blast through it (and my cabs as well!!) HTH, Ian -
In short, they're generally good and well made. The good ones are REALLY good (true of many manufacturers) Just look at the number of members that recommend Ibanez to people starting out (or Yamaha or Squier)
Yep, 'my first bass[sup](tm)[/sup]' is the Ibanez - currently on loan out to another beginner, which speaks volumes about their playability. Plus mine has been modded (see siggie)
I used to have an ATK305, which was a fantastic bass for the money. Very close to the classic Stingray tone for a fraction of the price.
Me too. Moved it on to a deserving home about a year ago. Still see it being played every week, which is nice though. It's meant to be played.
I had an ATK and it was a very nice bass. Not the best looker in the world, quite heavy, but excellent build quality, playability (if you can handle a chunky neck) and great tone. If it was a 5 string I'd probably still have it.
Yep, couldn't get on with the weight or the neck really, kinda regret moving it on, but it was worth it to see it being played by someone who can get the most out of it. HTH, Ian
Hey, Thanks Ian! The mix was basically a quick and dirty on the day.. We never got the raw protools files though, so it will be back to the studio to mix/master if we want to go down that route... or at least a trip there with a HD. Personally I'm fairly happy with the mix, but maybe it would be good to do some more tweaking. What do you think? James
Even better then! Mix-wise, seems to hang together well, maybe a smidge too much reverb on the vocals, but overall, very impressive. With some tweaking at the mixdown stage and some judicious EQ'ing, will be sounding great. Had a listen to the rest of the tracks now (I'm on my lunch break, hey!) - like them a lot! Certainly the recording captures the energy of the band all playing together, rather than laying down guide tracks and then overdubbing later. Maybe a few places where the timing could do with tightening up - the last 20 seconds or so of 'Chase the Dragon'. The track 'The End' is really good - starts out strong, but the toms sound slightly off timing-wise - feels a bit rushed on some of the fills. Other than that (and please understand, they're really minor niggles), great job all round . And, yep, your singer can really sing well - no worries there. Would love to see you guys live sometime, planning on gigging any time soon? HTH, Ian
-
Given the first track a bit of a listen at work - have to listen to the rest when I get home, but first impressions are good. Some nice playing there, bud Has this been mixed yet, or are these just raw tracks with a few effects on the vocals? Cheers, Ian
My gig is cancelled, so I'm hoping to make this. I suppose I could bring the 100W Burman Valve combo - do you think that would be loud enough? I'd need someone to give me a hand getting it out of the car.
Be good to catch up with you Pete I've got a heavy-duty trolley you can use to help shift the Burman - hope that helps Ian -
+1 to the Axis of Awesome clip - made me chuckle Ian

low tuning, finger playing, flapping strings, thumb rest?
Bottle replied to Chest Rockwell's topic in General Discussion
As an experiment, de-tuned my Squier P-special by taking off the standard 4-string set and whacking on the bottom four strings from a 5-string set, filed the nut and adjusted the truss rod. Took about an hour all-told, including tuning and intonation. Just for sh*ts-n-giggles, de-tuned down to a low A (ADGC) - works reasonably well. Can't see a problem with using maybe a decent B-string (around 0.125 - 0.135 gauge), and leaving the rest as-is. Maybe look at some heavier strings for the F#, high B and E, will help keep the tension fairly even. Three semi-tones is quite a drop for most standard strings. HTH, Ian -
Haven't had much experience with recording, apart from last year. Took my GK head and EBS 4x10 into the studio - ended up using a SansAmp as well (bit before I decided to get one for myself - thanks Silddx!!). Put the 4x10 and head in a make-shift iso-room next to studio's live room and ran a thin cable under the door. Mic'ed up the cab (grill removed) with an AKG D112 on one of the cones - don't remember anything else in there. Mix was mostly DI with a bit of the D112 for colour. HTH, Ian

I know people have been advocating the CV and VM range, but have you considered the slightly cheaper alternative Squier Precision specials? Has a J-width neck on a Precision body, with the added bonus of a J-pickup in the bridge position as well as a standard P-pup at the neck. Mine works a treat, especially played finger-style over the J-pup with the neck pup rolled off a bit. HTH, Ian
