  1. Levy's EM8S Bass Gigbag labelled Lakland on the lower zip pocket. This has been 'under-the-bed' since 2008, so it might be called 'new old stock' and it's definitely what your Lakland bass is crying out for ... £40 posted to the UK. Here's the Levy's description...
  2. New and in the packet ... D'Addario Chromes ECG23 Extra Light 10-14-20w-28-38-48 £18 at GAK, yours for £11 posted to the UK. Also new and in the packet ... D'Addario Chromes ECG24 Jazz Light 11-15-22w-30-40-50 £16.99 at GAK, yours for £10 posted to the UK. TAKE BOTH SETS FOR £19 POSTED
  3. The E string, which is cut shortest, has approx 5 inches of silk beyond the 32.5 inches ball end to silk. The A string is approx 2 inches longer, and D and G are longer still.
  4. They are typical Rotosound 30" short scale. Ball end to silk is roughly 32.5 inches.
  5. Lightly Used Ernie Ball Cobalt Flatwounds 50-70-85-105 long scale, cut for two-a-side Epiphone Embassy, with purple silks. £46 at Strings Direct, yours for £25 posted to the UK.
  6. Lightly Used Rotosound RS77S Short Scale Jazz Bass Flatwounds, cut for four-a-side Fender Mustang PJ, pale blue silk. 40-50-75-90 £37 at Strings Direct, but yours for £16 posted to the UK.
  7. Light few hours use La Bella 760M Flats 52-73-95-110 long scale, cut for a Fender Precison four-a-side headstock with blue silk. The original 54 set, £44 at Strings Direct but yours for £20 posted to UK.
  8. Unused DR Legend Flatwounds 45-65-85-105 long scale with golden yellow silks. Packaging is slightly tatty, but strings are untouched. I'd call these brighter sounding flatwounds, YMMV. £50 at Strings Direct, but these are yours for £30 posted to the UK.
  9. If it doesn't need to be specifically a Fender, the Lakland Skyline 44-64 Custom is a P bass with a J pickup at the bridge and a J neck.
  10. I had a black lined fretless Ripper in 1983 (or thereabouts). I always assumed it to be aftermarket and if you Google fretless ripper images there are plenty, but unlined not lined.
  11. Not knocking Move It but the great British self-written Rock 'n' Roll album is Billy Fury's The Sound of Fury.
  12. With roots, octaves, fifths, your intonation needs to be more exact. With thirds, especially if you are playing blues or related music with another 'fretless' person, e.g. slide guitarist, it can get spicy, maybe in a good way. I'm not sure how this is real but it is my experience that you can take liberties with a third that you couldn't with a root.
  13. A conversation I am fortunate enough never to have had ... Random person: 'You're trying to play fretless bass [or upright bass, delete as applicable].' Me: 'Thanks for noticing.' Random person: 'But almost everything you played was well down below the E on the G-string.' Me: 'That's true.' Random person: 'And you didn't close your eyes and I definitely saw you look at the fretboard fingerboard.' Me: 'So what?' Random person: 'It means you're not a fretless bass player.' Me: 'Whatever ... and don't bother coming to our next gig.'
  14. For me, Audis and VWs are not better than SEATs and Škodas, because they cost more and don't have anything I need over and above what the SEATs and Škodas have.
  15. It must have been a laugh miming to those big production numbers with this line-up and not even plugged in or mic'ed.
  16. I've played poplar-bodied basses ... ... and you know what, nobody ever said to me 'wow that bass has no sort of low end, is it poplar?' i'd expect them to be eminently playable and to sound great.
  17. He was a session bassist before he was a Walker Brother ...
  18. It happens every few months ... even though it's pretty much impossible to overrate him. But some people confuse personally liking or disliking something or somebody with that thing or person being good or not musically.
  19. Check the socks ... ... check out Jet's socks again ... ... and with a sunburst Bass VI
  20. Very good and here are some pics ...
  21. If you’d said that at the beginning then we needn’t have wasted our time ... again
