1.
I appreciate the comments but I totally disagree. I think this is a great take on a classic track.
So, do you think it has soul?
 2.
Correct. Next question is what is your budget and what music are you trying to play?
I don't have a budget as such, I'm interested to know how much I would need to spend to get a playable and worthwhile instrument. £200? £500? How much? I'm not myself trying to play the accordion but my son has been taking an interest and is in possession of a borrowed heap of sh*te with some missing keys, out of which he manages to get a tune. He plays guitar, banjo and harmonica in a sort of dub-klezmer-bluegrass-funk band (drums/bass/guitars/banjo/harmonica/viola/trombone/vocals) and is looking to expand his skills.
Also a warning - do not buy one of the cheap, 1930's to 1950's boxes that infest Ebay, unless you are very lucky they are pretty well unplayable.
No, I wouldn't.
 3.
The original version GROOVES! To me, the Marcus version is indulgent, and is ruined by the jazz dissonance.
Much better.
 4.
Technique, sound, feel, timing, dynamics...it's all here.
Maybe, but for me it has no soul.
 5.
Piano, chromatic or diatonic? It makes a difference Steve
Piano, that's if I'm correctly understanding chromatic and diatonic to be references to button accordions?
 6. I agree with you about Sabbath but not about Zeppelin.
 7.
1) Fender Jazz and its derivatives - insane controls (two volume knobs, what's that all about?), neck is too narrow, pickups are noisy in all but the dead-ahead position. 2) Rics - looks ridiculous. 3) Gibson Thunderbird et al - as above. 4) Singlecut basses - even "looks ridiculous" doesn't go far enough for these aberrations
And what did you say you thouhgt of Bongos?
 8.

Ah, mission control, Jack Casady's Alembicised Guild.
 9.
Fender Precisions, don't like them at all, neck's horrible and all you get out of them is a thud. I like me actives me
Completely not true, which is why they've been used in so many different genres.
 10. Lakland Strings are made by GHS which suggests that GHS make their own strings. D'Addario make strings for Fender. So the conclusion seems to be that there are string making companies and then other companies who, because strings aren't their first thing, have strings made for them. So you can expect that the likes of GHS, D'Addario, La Bella, Thomastik, etc., make their own strings while the likes of Fender, Ernie Ball, Lakland don't make their own strings.
 11.
and this:
That's an old Harmony bass.
 12.
That's probably the subject of another worthwhile thread, for new players wondering how to go about setting their sound up.
It's not because I'm setting the sound up, I tend to leave everything flat.
 13.
I have an uncanny ability to sound like Les Dawson's piano playing, what ever bass I have in my hands
I don't really like the ringing piano-like tone that Les gets.
 14.
... Different basses make me play differently ...
Strange, because I seem to be able to make all basses sound like me.
 15.

... and that's one of the many that I never wanted to own.
 16.
Yes. How long is a piece of string, btw??
17. I've never wanted to own most basses.
 18. Can anyone offer any advice on beginners' (but not rubbish) accordions?
 19.
I always wonder about the guys using the smaller single 12 cabinets how you get on with them. You ever struggle for level or monitoring on stage?...
With Mesa Scout 1x12, I've never had a problem up against drummer, guitarist, and uke/guitar/harmonica/lap steel but then it may depend on the kind of band and musicians you're playing with because my guitarists are using semi-acoustic guitars and small combos and the drummer knows the meaning of 'dynamics' - sometimes it's only one stick and maraccas in his other hand, for example. Also the Mesa is a 1x12 but also has a 1x10 radiator.

 21.
I grew up round the corner from there. My first job as an aprentice -1968-was above a West Indian Cafe on Dudley Rd, Blue beat juke box running all day, rumbling up through the floor. Spent a lot of my time repairing Blus Spot radiograms. Always blamed me getting into Bass on that job.
I was born in Dudley Road Hospital in 1952 and lived in Spring Hill until 1957.
 22.
+1 BUT be aware that they are currently as scarce as hen's wotsits. I couldn't find any in the UK last month and ended up sourcing them from Thomann in Germany at an outrageous £35 a set. If you want to try some but don't want to splash too much cash, I can let you have a pre-loved set for £10. Nowt wrong with 'em, but they have been on two different basses already.
Just broken in nicely then.
 23. If you're a beginner on flats I wouldn't start with the La Bella 760FM - definitely go for the 760FL set.
 24.
You from round there then ?
Born in Winson Green and lived in Northfield, Erdington, Moseley and, washed up in Brighton via Leeds, Lancaster, and London
