1.
Been asked to join a "Nu Metal" type band by a mate. They play in "C" tuning. Rubber band strings anyone ? Whats the most awkward/daft/unusual tuning you've had to play in?
The only times I've ever played in any tuning other than EADG is when I briefly had a five string (BEADG) and on very rare occasions for odd songs I've dropped it to DADG. I've never once been asked by others to play in any tuning.
 2.
Agreed, but that type of date stamp was used later in the 70's
5 was the Precision code through most of the 1960s. In early 70s the code changed to 01. There wasn't a day date, only month and year dates.
 3.
I was pondering in a Cardiff music shop today and I came away with the opinion that the line between Fender and Squier is becoming evermore blurred.
Which Fender and which Squier? I recently had Squier CV that was every good, especially after I upgraded the electronics, but it wasn't as good as any of the Fenders I've had recent years.
 4.
I would have thought the neck stamp should be more day, month, year and then B
The first number is the model code - 5 is Precision Bass.
 5.
I personally wouldn't dream of paying that much 'starting bid even!' for a bass from ebay without some decent provenance. The stated "green ink proves nothing except 5 is a Precision neck & B is 1.5" nut. Photo's of date code on pots may help + if there's any info on the body in the neck pocket or cavities. Neck plates 'like that' are easily available on ebay, BTW that checks out as 1970 on guitardaterproject.org I'm not an expert & not saying it's fake or genuine, just my opinion, it's a lot for a chance buy.
B is 1.625" (not 1.5") isn't it? Otherwise I agree.
 6. Excellent combo, I love mine.
 7.
Lots of pedals isn't the problem, the problem is having no clue what he is up to.
Correct. I used to play with a guitarist who had I don't know how many pedals but there were two boards and one of them was split level. He also had five guitars (all white Strats) in different tunings, each labelled with the key to which it was tuned so that there could be no mistake. However, he was a fast setup and never any confusion or problems with his sound.
 8.
How many Violin's, Cello's, D/basses etc, have you seen with maple boards? R/w boards are the only way to go!!
How many violins, cellos, double basses etc have you seen with rosewood fingerboards? Aren't they are commonly ebony - except when they are cheap and are black stained maple?
 9.
If you're not using a tube amp then get a VT Bass pedal or some other mild overdrive. Job done.
I said no effects but a VT Bass I would use.
 10. I think the influence on tone is extremely minimal - much less than strings, pickups, pick or fingers, playing near bridge or neck, amp settings etc., they all beat fingerboard wood. But I still think rosewood looks and feels better.
 11. No effects, Precision bass, probably flatwounds, valve amp, maybe a tuner. That's it.
 12. Have you seen this page Chris? http://www.scottymoore.net/ampeg.html
 13.
I played a stingray once that had adjustable foam mutes, they were raised up and down by fiddly threaded things. Someone ought to design something similar that works by lever, can work above or below the strings, and maybe just attaches to the sides of the bridge. 14. ... and stating where you are based.
 15.
The arrangement of black paint on your bass is a very common sign (although not in itself a certain guarantee) that the bass is ply, and that's why people commented on it after you had said that it was solid alder.
I stand by what I said. You asked for an explanation, I did my best to give it in good faith. It's not my problem, you sort it. Bye.
 16.
nope, still dont know what you're on about , your pix dont prove that bass aint ply or otherwise - as I said, you can't tell by the paint job, and that was what was said wasn't it?!
The pics I posted show black paint not covering the belly or forearm cuts. That's how it commonly is on non-ply sunburst basses. Your bass did not have that arrangement but instead had black paint hiding the fact (as you have since clarified) that the bass is ply. The arrangement of black paint on your bass is a very common sign (although not in itself a certain guarantee) that the bass is ply, and that's why people commented on it after you had said that it was solid alder. A solid wood bass is very unlikely to have the black paint as it is on your bass. We know this from experience. You can tell stuff from the paint job. The paint job is important and clear evidence that the bass is ply and, as you later confirmed, it is ply. If that's not clear, then I give up.
are these observations made by anyone who might be interested in buying the bass btw?
Probably not, but if the observations had not been made then some people might still be thinking that the bass was solid alder. And, I think, the more you protest then the less likely you are to sell it here.
 17.
exactly - well thanks for that!
So, do you get why we thought it was ply and not solid alder and that we did know what we were talking about? They weren't 'emphatic negative remarks' but factual observations based on prior experience.
 18.
not denying its a ply body, but I still dont know what you guys are talking about when you say the paint job is obviously hiding its construction. I've owned plenty of sunburst guitars of varying standards and this looks no different from the rest of them. The black pigment always goes round the outer edge of the bass and the edge surrounds. This looks as good as any vintage Fender and definitely better than the shameful finishes I've seen on some of the Fender Mex basses. I wish, before you guys that make these emphatic negative remarks all over someones post actually know what they're talking about.
Well, I only commented because you asked (in a post you've since deleted, I think) why someone would suggest that it was ply. Not ply front: Not ply back: I don't know whether your bass is ply (well, except that you said it was ply after you looked in the control cavity) but the black paint covering the places where ply would show is exactly what happens on sunburst ply basses.
 19. Updated list: D'Addario (Fender) Dean Markley DR Dunlop Elixir Ernie Ball Gallistrings GHS (Lakland, Overwater?) La Bella (Sadowsky) Mapes Newtone Picato (Overwater?) Pyramid (Hofner) Rotosound (Legacy?) SIT Thomastik Anyone know if Newtone are making strings for other companies - my guess is that they would be.
 20.
What about legacy from strings direct, aren,t they supposed to be made in the rotosound factory ?
I've never noticed those before. It does say: 'Legacy Nickel Electric Bass Guitar Strings are made for us in the UK to our own exacting specifications'
 21. It looks like ply because of the way in which the black paint covers the belly cut and the forearm cut where the ply would show if it wasn't blacked out.
 22.
That's right, course they should - someone should tell them.
I expect we may be in a minority.
 23.
..I don't get why Fender go to the trouble of getting all the details right on the AVs and then fit them with strings that weren't even invented when the original basses were in production..
They should have the mutes too.
 24.
D'oh! It was the 'if you win it' bit that threw me.
It fooled me too at first.
