1.
If anyone is not sure about flatwounds then just listen to the bass on anything recorded before the mid 1960s as there's a good possibility that's what you're listening to.
Yes, in fact Fender basses were factory fitted with flats until the late 1970s.
 2. There's no substitute for actually trying the flatwounds yourself. Besides which just as roundwounds vary a lot by manufacturer, construction etc. so do flatwounds. For example, Thomastik Jazz Flats neither feel like nor sound like D'Addario Chromes.
 3.
I think thats true of all basses, I bet we could find a genre of most types of music played on most types of bass
Yes. It's a very strange thing, It's often said about Rickenbackers too, one sound only, they always sound like Chris Squire, but actually they also sound like McCartney.
 4. People often say the P does one thing well. But the P does a lot more than one thing, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to sound like both James Jamerson and JJ Burnell on the same bass.
 5. I have a Thomann 22. They are made by Hora in Romania. It's been fine and was playable when it arrived and I would recommend it but I have since spent £100+ on a new bridge, new sound post and setup, another £100+ on new strings, another £100+ on pickup, etc. etc.
 6. Here's Ronnie Lane playing a Harmony in 1968 ... http://youtu.be/8jYgctXpajs
 7. Did you not ask to see photos of the twist before you bought it?
 8.
Well if your under 50 or 40, not liking rock makes sense. I wonder how many 60 plus folks don't like Rock? Blue
I am 62 ... and I know a lot of younger people including teenagers that like 'rock' whatever that is.
 9.
When I read threads like this then, rightly or wrongly, I find myself thinking foot-on-the-monitor bands (often with big hair) driven by the ego of the frontman. I've paid good money to see everyone from The Who and the Stones through to Foo Fighters and Kaiser Chiefs (oh alright, scratch that last one) so I'm not saying that foot-on-the-monitor is automatically a bad thing. At the Hammersmith Odeon or the O2 or Knebworth. I just don't think it works at the Dog & Duck.
So is all that all rock or what? I am confused. It seems to me that rock, like jazz, folk, blues, soul, reggae, hip-hop, dubstep, etc., etc., is too vague and varied a concept to have much of a conversation about without very quickly all talking about different things.
 10.
I guess the term Rock is relative. But I'm thinking; Rock, generally played loud ,usually 3 guitars, bass maybe keys and vocals playing serious riff based rock not the more acoustic music that is popular today. blue
Hmmm, I don't really feel any wiser, except I'm now guessing that I am on the "I don't like 'rock'" side.
 11. It's not at all clear to me what the word 'rock' means in the context of this thread. Stuff I like is referenced alongside stuff I have no interest in whatsoever.
 12. I've been bored of rock for so long I can't remember how long.
 13. Music Man Bongo is basswood.
 14.
Get on over to Denmark Street then - they had two out, and the one I played was lovely. You must have seen the threads about the shop - seriously nice guys and great service!
Did you play the M85?
 15.
I went to Anderton's a few months back, cash im pocket, all ready to buy the Guild Starfire bass they had in. Unfortunatley the shop model left a little to be desired and they took forever getting the other one for me to try that I left empty handed. Still have major GAS for one though.
I emailed Andertons several times about the Starfire but never got a straight answer until they stopped responding at all. That's another shop I won 't be using again.
 16.
Both - wasn't too keen on the looks of the M85 - looked a bit out of proportion.
I like the M85 look but I've only seen pictures. I might feel differntly if I saw it in the flesh.
 17.
Really hating this thread now - was in London today so made a detour to Wunjo, and yes, they had the Guilds in stock- Korean, £795 inc hard case, play like a dream. I now need to sell some stuff and hand on to some gig money......
Which did they have in stock? The reissued Starfire or the reissued M85 or both?
 18. Harvey Mandel and Wayne Perkins were also considered as replacements for Mick Taylor - hence they play on some tracks on Black and Blue. I think I also reaad somewhere that Jeff Beck was considered but he was completely not interested.
 19. I just don't go there; it hurts too much and I'm usually out of tune.
 20.
Is Chas still around, I get the feeling he's not. Blue
Died 1996, aged 57.

 24.
Sombody corect me if I'm wrong, but when I saw Paul McCartney last year here in Milwaukee, I could swear his bass player was playing a Gold Jack Casidy Bass, the Epiphone, right? Blue
Yes he plays an Epiphone Casady.
