1. As always, the main thing is: how does it sound? Frequency range usually has some science behind it, but dont put too much thought into it. An industry standard cab is the Eden 410XST, and that starts rolling off about 50-something Hz. All the usual caveats with different speaker sizes and combinations apply to ERBs too, and you certainly cant generalise speakers too much, all 4x10s certainly dont sound like X, and not all 15" speakers are too slow for Y. If weight/size are an issue, a lot of Neo cabs are geared towards a smoother, more full-range sound (wether this is because the speakers are neo and that makes them sound different or not has been discussed ad nauseum). Either way you should get extended response and lighter weight from your average neo cab.
2.
lucky you....very lucky you....or should I say 'ye'. losing the ashdown wouldn't have been that bad though, the unforseen spark would have been it's only chance to shine.
Did someone wake up cranky this morning?
3.
And the Lord looked down upon the World and Saw the folly of using the Quarter Inch Jack for both the Input and the Output, and he was filled with sorrow. And so he spake unto Neutrik and sayeth he: "Fix it!" And Lo was created the Speakon.
And with the Speakon came unto the world the abilty to actually handle high currents. And so it was written that Adam no longer shocked himself upon the open contacts of the 1/4". And the Lord saw this, and it was good. EDIT- Actually why do we still use 1/4"? Are they that much cheaper? Even 'big' bass companies have 1/4" speaker jacks on some amps. I cant think of any speakons on guitar amps (low current maybe?) wheras pro audio amps ALWAYS use them (or banana plugs, which I guess are just as good at not being 1/4" as Speakons)
4. Speaker signals shall not go anywhere except unto speakers! Glad to hear things arent totally FUBAR, it would suck to lose two amps like that.

6.
i need to steal your rig.
Sure, I live at number 9. Ive been trying to find a pic of my amp in action but all the gigs Ive done recently have been for the Sage Gateshead, and Ive been using a supplied backline. So that sucks. Anyway, heres to all our amps. Big and small, rich and poor. Cos without them the drummer couldnt keep time.
7. Whilst I dont agree with some of the generalisations Bob stated, I really enjoyed reading that article. Of course, nowhere near as much as I enjoy my GK stuff!
8. So maybe Im biased, but youre requirements do sound like youre a prime candidate for GK neo. Big solid state sound and plenty loud and light. The head/Neo 112 recommendation is a good one, works for me.
9. Hey, 18 years old here, been playing for 5 years. And no mooching off the parents either! Ive worked at Beamish Museum for 3 years and before that I delivered the Advertisers. Basses are a Fender USA P, EBMM Ray5 and Squier P. Amps are GK 1001/Neo The 112 small rig. 212 big rig. And the inevitable 312 HUGE rig.
10. Im here to help. Even if I do take forever to check up on threads Ive posted in.
11. Everything I can think of that price range seems to be with different speaker configurations. Which I guess defeats the object of lightweight somewhat. I can think of a couple Laney combos that are 15" (might be a good thing because as much as I love the sound, they are quiet for their ratings IMO). Other than that, theres maybe the Ashdown Electric Blue (totally different to the Hartke, but maybe a little more like your Trace Elliot) or youre spending a lot more money. Ill let you know if I think of anything perfect.
I didnt realise that the crossover in the heads was at 5 kHz though. Seems quite high to me. I dont doubt you, its just that I have a tweeter in my 4 x10 (which apparently crosses over at 5 kHz) and being as I use overdrive myself quite a bit I turn the tweeter off as it sounds harsh to me.
The GK heads have an inbuilt 'boost' circuit that adds quite a bit of growl and dirt, this is located AFTER the crossover on only the woofer amp. The result is overdriven speakers and a pristine clean tweeter. In other words, it was designed specifically to combat what you mentioned: drive sounding harsh on tweeters. Of course, you can only use the inbuilt boost, which you may or may not like. The effects loop is full range.
13. Just a thought, you say you dont want a coloured DI cos youve got your head. Fair enough but isnt this a backup in case your head goes down? The Countryman Type 85 is indestructible and sounds great, industry standard. Mid-priced to expensive at about £150 in the UK. My fave 'cheap' DI is the Presonus TubePre at about £70. Look around, GAK, KMR audio and the like all have catalogues you can browse and when you see something that tickles your fancy you can ask something more specific. Think about application. Id love something like the Millennia Td1, but in my pop/rock band in a small pub with a cheapo PA system whats the point? All that clarity and fantastic tone wasted, along with my money. Similarly, if you want a pure, uncoloured sound then stay away from the Sansamp, MXR half preamp/half DI camp. HTH, Jack.
14. Some very sweet rigs so far, my little addition: GK 1001 and Neo 212. Thats the gig rig, not shown is the small rig (same but a 112) and the big rig, both cabs powered by the full 1hp from the amp. Super little rig (when I can get away with it) is an MXR M80+ DI. Jack.
