As bass players, we interact with objects that command attention (they're pretty big and they get people grooving) and are easy for us to fetishise (just say the words Alembic, Wal or Fodera and [i]someone[/i] in the room's going to start drooling), so I think it's easy to get sucked into GAS-world. I'm sure someone must have made the "basses are like women/men" (delete as appropriate for your sex/orientation) analogy before, but I'd say something like this: There's always something a little different about the next bass that crosses our path, and many of us take the plunge again and again, establishing relationships with many, many instruments, maybe looking out for "the one", or just enjoying the ride with as many "partners" as possible. Maybe it's the way they look; maybe it's the way they feel; maybe it's the way they sound. But they're all different, and they all let us do our thing with them, even if only for a little while. For me, my search through the land of basses is in its early stages, but I've found a couple that I'd happily settle down with (in a polygamous household, obviously ). And when I enjoy a bass, I enjoy the music I can make with it [i]so much[/i] more. Long story short: I'm a bass-loving bass-player.

I mean, what's with that weird rushing/dragging bit around 0:45 (and the other places it crops up) in "Black Dog"? I've seen a few videos of them playing it live, and they didn't do it live... so why in the studio? Sounds class though.

You could try Status half-wounds (the best half-wounds I've been able to get hold of) -- they still have some zing/twang/bite/whatever but with depth and smoothness, and they feel great. -

Actually, one of the nicest-feeling basses I've come across was a beaten-up CSL Jazz (with blocked maple neck). Trouble was, I couldn't judge the tone at all because the pickups had gone completely microphonic, so every tap of my wedding ring against the neck was just a massive CLONNNNGGG through the amp. As I said to the owner (and he agreed), with a bit of time and effort put in, it could be a really sweet bass. Hijacking my own thread here, Jon (well, it's sold anyway ), but what do you know about CSL? I've heard they were based in Newcastle/Gateshead, and were one of the many companies importing Japanese copies (from the Ibanez factory?) in the 70s/80s. Is that about right?

I felt the TIs were a bit too flexible and sproingy with the tighter string spacing of the SR5 (I've used them happily on my Squier fretless with 19mm spacing), although the sound was great -- plenty of bite and enough zing. The La Bellas, on the other hand, are much firmer with a darker sound (and not quite as smooth a feel under the fingers). It's all darkness and growl with them. I've since stuck a set of Status half-wounds on, just as an experiment, and I think they're the mutt's nuts. A smooth enough feel, with the tonal best bits from the TIs and La Bellas. Zing, growl, bite and darkness. Top stuff, and a fair bit cheaper than either!

Up for sale: this lovely Squier Vintage Modified Jazz fretless, in pretty much as-new condition (bought new from Reverb early last year). The only "modification" is that I've fitted a set of TI flats, which have taken off the brittle edge to the sound that the ebonol board gives with rounds. Now it's all growl, mwah and bite. (I'll include the original Fender rounds if I can find them, but they're honestly not up to much IMO.) I've got the action preposterously low at the moment, but there's plenty of room for adjustment in the truss rod and bridge. I'm sure I don't need to say that much about these fantastic basses. I'm just having a bit of a clearout, and my fretless SR5 is more than enough fretless for me. You can see from the pictures how clean this is. Never been gigged -- just played at home and at a couple of rehearsals. No dings that I'm aware of, although there might be the tiniest knock at the very tip of the headstock, which all my basses get in the end. It's what comes from practising in the attic space. Those sloping ceilings... [b]£150 delivered[/b] in the UK, although if you're local we can do collection. No case with this, but I'll find a good box for shipping. Don't worry -- I send stuff out with couriers for a living, so I'm plenty practiced at packing. If you've got anything to trade, you can but try me!

I haven't fired this thing up for months: two young kids in bed means POD + headphones all the way when it comes to practice. So it's gotta go. It's a nice and simple practice amp, 30W into a 10" speaker. The manual's [url="http://www.marshallamps.com/downloads/files/MB15_30hbk.pdf"]online at the Marshall website[/url], but there's not much you need to know. It's got two channels: modern (clean) and classic (crunchy), and they're footswitchable... but there's no footswitch included. There's a (functional) compressor and a slightly odd but rather effective EQ: the treble and bass controls are as normal, and then there's a "voice" selector and level control, which offers three different mid voicings. A bit odd, but there's something in there for everyone. Other features: CD In jack (for playing along), Line Out, Headphones Out and a send/return FX loop. In VGC; had it since new, and it's only had light home use. Only blemish is that the covering material (tolex-y stuff) has come away slightly down one join on the back, as you can see in the pictures. Don't know when it developed that, which just goes to show how little it bothers me. Oh, and the metal grille on the front is slightly lop-sided along the top (slopes down from right to left). Hold on. Is the OP talking about the fretless VMJ or the fretted VMJ? The phrase "octave funky pop" suggests fretted to me. If it's fretless, I've got TI flats on mine, and they're great. Not as dull as something like La Bella flats -- the TIs still have some zing and bite. -
