Both are (as far as I'm aware) American terms & as such are completely unforgivable if used by British musicians.
No, I knew what both terms meant, but it just struck me as a little odd that they might have worked their way across to the UK. Maybe it's our non-UK members using them. It was particularly odd seeing Janek Gwizdala use them when he used to join in here, because he's a Brit, is he not?
  2.
In the circles I work in, we tend to talk of players as having "great chops" or being a "monster" (ie., very good), but if we started calling eachother "cats", we'd have to shoot eachother in the heads in some sort of oddly ritualistic suicide pact, LOL!
Great chops? Presumably not a horn player. The hairs get in the way. Nah, "chops" seems to have made its way across to the rock world too, especially metal. "Monster" reminds me of "mother", which I believe meant the same thing around the time the Mothers of Invention formed. Iiiiiinteresting...
  3. Every so often on here (and quite a lot on Talkbass), and especially in the context of jazz and fusion players, people will be referred to as "cats", with a personal practice regime known as "shedding". Now, to me, when a cat sheds you get this: and not an increase in technical proficiency on one's chosen instrument. My question is this: in the jazz/fusion world, do players genuinely, honestly and unselfconsciously refer to each other as "cats"? And do they "shed"? In the UK? Or is it still very much a US term? [BTW, I don't mean this as any sort of veiled criticism. I'm just genuinely intrigued as to how and why this particular bit of (1940s? NYC?) hipster slang has percolated through to the present day.]
  4.
Coolio. I do really like the form factor of these cabs, so providing they can provide adaquate volume and midrange from a 300 watt head to keep up with a really loud band I might well be interested... I always turn tweeters off so I'm not after tsssssssssssssst, but I do like a fair bit of grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. The thing about the 1212L is its so sensitive I can get really loud with 300 watts, the only thing I'm worried about with this is I've heard the compact for instance needs a lot of juice to hit the same sort of SPL levels.
I'm sure I've seen Alex write somewhere that the Compact and the Vintage are whole different beasts in terms of the juice they need. Summat to do with box volume, porting and voodoo, I think. (Don't forget your virgin's blood when plugging in.) I've tried the Vintage with an old 150W Carlsbro head, and that was incredibly loud too. It's a really sensitive cab. 300W should be plenty. Plenty plenty.
  5.
How does this thing compare to the 1212L in terms of punch and volume? Can it do "punchy" or is it more a warm, wooooooomfy (for want of a better made up word) thing?
Having never heard a 1212L, I can't make comparisons, but I can do made-up words until the cows come home. IME with my Vintage, it's got everything from woooooooommmfff to tttttttt, with loads of bmmmmmmmmm, grrrrrrrrrrr and fllllllllll in the middle (the fllllllllll makes it awesome for fretless). Depending on the room, it can get a bit too bmmmmmmmmm-y, but it's easily tamed with EQ. It doesn't do tssssssssssst unless you get a tweetered one, but unless you want that Marcus-Miller-type sparkle, it's got all the top you need. Sweet highs (cuts off around 4 kHZ, IIRC) rather than vicious highs. The mids are punchtacular. As for volume, again I can't compare with the 1212L, but I'll say this: on my LMII (500W max), with the input gain around 12 o'clock, I can't get the master volume beyond around 11 or 12 o'clock while remaining in the same room. It would be literally painful to take it any higher. And the speakers just lap it up and beg for more. It's a bit weird, really, how much volume it can deliver while remaining clean. It's... er... volumeriffic.
  6.
With one condition. The first note of every tune gets played with my index finger.
Yep, me too. Unless it's something like an upbeat with "disco octaves" (i.e. starting on the higher note), in which case starting with the index finger would be madness. I'd still have to give it some conscious thought not to start on the index finger though!
  7.
And yes UK VAT charges go up on 1/1/2011 - still 17.5% until then
VAT pedant strikes again... it's actually going up on 4/1/2011 (first non-weekend, non-bank-holiday day of 2011).
  8. Being the terminology-snob I am, I saw the thread title and thought, "I don't play eighth notes... I play quavers!" Anyway, I use index or middle equally. Depends on what's been leading up to it. Or, more often than not, raking down to it.
  9.
I do like your train of thought though Owain.
I'm just thinking of the local second-hand market for a Dinky P (i.e. me ). But yeah, it can get a little pricey. I've just priced up a Dinky P body in swamp ash including a 3TS finish, and it's $475, and a Warmoth neck (with satin nitro finish) would be another $315, so you're already over £500 without shipping, VAT or duty... or hardware! Still, cheaper than a Sadowsky...
  10.
I'm after a downsized and LIGHT weight Precision or Jazz 'style' bass; Sadowsky or similar.
Just a quick digression, and not meaning to hijack the thread, but have you thought about getting a Warmoth Dinky P or Dinky J body (or even their chambered J, although that's not downsized) in a light wood like swamp ash, to team up with whatever neck and hardware you fancy? Could be a relatively cheap and effective way to get that elusive lightweight issue sorted...
  11.
And our VAT is now at 20%.
Not for another six months. Unless they're doing things differently up there.
  12.
What do you mean by 'drop B' - do you mean BEAD?
I assume "drop B" to be B-F#-B-E. The bottom four from a light 4-string set would probably be a good start. (Light because the upper 3 strings are a touch above normal tuning.)
  13.
Good work, what program did you use to transcribe that / write it out? I finale notepad, but i'm bored of it's simplicity and inability to do a few things that i'd like it to do!
Cheers. I use Finale Allegro (that's the "Jazz" font -- it's a nice bit chunkier than the standard "Maestro"). It's brilliant for everything except the fact you can't change the shape of individual noteheads. Bit of a bugger, but I get round it by putting "dead" notes in brackets instead of using crossheads. You only get editable noteheads in the full-whack version, but that's the only thing I'm missing at the moment, and it's not worth US$400 for me. I would've gone for the cheaper Finale PrintMusic, but it can't do additive time signatures. Deal-breaker for me. No, seriously, that was the only thing that stopped me... and it cost me an extra US$100.
  14.
Yes, that's the original lacquer. Probably what you're seeing is the wood texture showing slightly on the coarser-grained bits.
Yeah, that's probably it. Most noticeable on the top horn in the first couple of pictures.
  15.
Satellite's not my first choice for a search term - I like to be honest but don't want to actually put people off! However, if you tried vintage, MIJ, copy, 70s, etc you might come up with... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=120590911861 It's got an issue or 3 but is a surprisingly nice, playable old plank. J.
Great listing, Jon! Clear, thorough and honest, with good pictures. Just one question: is that the original finish? It looks (to my non-expert eyes) like a really thick DIY coat of brush-applied varnish, but I know nothing.

    Big Muff
I just wanted something subtle and different...
I could use many words to describe the Big Muff range... but "subtle" is not one of them.
  17.
I wish my wallet was deep enough...
You and me both, fella. You and me both...

    Big Muff
Question is which one?
If you can, try them. They can be very different. Even two of the same model can be quite different, because of the tolerance ranges of the relatively cheap components. My Muff of choice is the Bass Big Muff, but my fuzz of choice overall is the Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie B. It's Muff-like, but with much more mid-range content. The Big Muff is pretty scooped, which works well in some situations but not others.
  19.
just out of curiosity, did you try it with an expression pedal??
Sadly not. I meant to, but the only expression pedal I have is the weird and wonderful Devi Ever Peep (light-sensitive variable resistor, basically). The Peep works OK with other things, but I never got it to marry properly with the Enigma. Could have been as simple as the Enigma wanting a TRS (stereo-type) connector rather than TS (guitar-lead-type). I don't know. In the grand scheme of things, nothing I'm doing at the moment has any sensible place for an envelope filter, so it went.
  20.
Don't like it then
It's fun watching stuff do the rounds on here. I got this Enigma from SuperMaximo (I think he had it from new) and sold it to sk8 a few weeks back. Where she stops, nobody knows...
  21.
Those padauk ones are loooovely .... yummy
You notice there are no names on them? That means Alan's making some stock basses. Wallets at the ready, people.
  22.
Looking good matey
As good as a plank can look anyway. Let the magic commence...
  23.
Different strings for different basses. You've got to find the right strings to suit the bass and the way you play it.
+1 TI flats on the ACG Status half-wounds on the SR5 DR Sunbeams on the OLP D'Addario nickel rounds on the SUB D'Addario Chromes (flats) on the Hondo
  24. Neck blank, third from top: ...or third from right: Really liking the way the centre piece of wenge is noticeably different in colour from the outer pieces. Beautiful. Interesting shots anyway. Those padauk ones are loooovely. Whoever Mark is, that's a big ol' neck he's got there (6-string? 7-string?). And Joshua's got very similar tastes to me.
  25.
Ah, you obviously have a plethora of gear then
It's all pedals! I should have pointed out that the MicroBass lives on my "small" pedalboard (tuner, compressor, noise gate, chorus, MicroBass). The "big" board's just fuzz, fuzz, drive, fuzz, distortion, fuzz, fuzz...
Hope the shoulder gets better soon mate!
Cheers. Maybe I should start a "My shoulder hurts" thread for maximum BC sympathy.
