1. Hi Guys, I've been using an Orange Terror for the past few years now, and have been very happy with it, however I have recently dug out an old Ampeg combo from my shed, circa 1990's (can't recall the model number, but it's a 100w 1 x 15 from the 90's, with push/pull EQ) to use at our rehearsal space, and am loving the tone. It just sounds so fat yet defined at the same time. I'm guessing that although this combo was probably a budget line, it reproduces that 'Ampeg' tone that people seem to love so much. Since I upgraded my cab from an LB212 to a Barefaced Compact I've not been loving the Orange quite as much. The Barefaced is far more articulate than the LB212, which seems to clean up the Orange's sound a bit, but I kinda liked the dark boomyness of it with the LB. So I'm thinking of going Ampeg, but I will need to do this on a budget, ideally with the funds that the Bass Terror will release when I sell it, and it would have to be a portable head (not going back to back breakers now!). I have been looking at the PF 500 head, and have read some good reviews, but wanted some opinions on this and on any other options, and how they compare to the Bass Terror. Thanks
2. Nice bass, Lovely birds-eye type grain in the headstock.
3. Hi Rough weight of cab? Will accept metaphors! Edit- just read description again. Duh.
4. Great post. I myself am guilty of not going out to see enough local bands, however I think once you play in a band it becomes hard to find the time, or the motivation, to actually go out and watch someone else's band. I'm usually glad of the Saturday night off for a change. Having said that, if you're in Cornwall, go check out my old band Hold The Sun. Fantastic grungy/garagey 3-piece with killer hooks. They've been working with John Cornfield from Sawmills (ala Muse, Supergrass, Whats the Story Morning Glory?) and are very good live. And very loud.
5. Gotta love the bejewelled groping hand
6. Any ideas if this will fit a folio F1? Has the inline transformer and a weird rectangle with a bump in it connector. Desperate for a replacement!
7. I guess I was a little bit heavy handed working on my Jap p bass a few months back as it seems i've broken my SPB1. I installed a new wiring kit two days ago only to find there is no signal coming from the p'up. A quick change back to the original Jap pickup and all was good again. In looking closely it seems a couple of the winding wires managed to free themselves from the solder position. I had a go at resoldering, but still nothing. looking closely again I can see there is a third loose winding flapping about on one of the p'ups so who knows what I've managed to do, but I've done a good job at knackering a pickup I really liked and only used about 5 times! I won't be able to fix this thing I know that, and I can't afford to buy a new one. Hoping a kind bc'er might have a look at it for me? I can offer a drink of your fancy.
8.
+1 ...IMO the something special is the nitro finish. While I couldn't tell you anything about the tonal differences/qualities of nitro v poly, the finish just makes them great to play. This is a great price for a really great bass.
The specs look the same bar the relic'ing and the nitro, but played back to back IMO there's no comparison. There is just something special about them. Plus every RW I've picked up has been incredibly light, so I think specially selected woods may have been used.
9.
PM sent my good man.
Go for it, you won't regret it!
10. I already have one and I'm tempted. What a price!! If I came in to £500 I wouldn't hesitate.
11. Alex, You need a PA!
12. Or for you, in fact!
13. Ok, so I ordered a Compact in June and I'm still waiting for it to turn up. I was aware there could be a bit of a wait, but what's concerning me now is after paying the full amount at the end of August, after Alex had emailed to tell me it was nearly ready, there is still no sign of it, and Alex is not responding to my emails. Hmmm. Is it too early to start worrying? I've heard no negative feedback yet in terms of products not arriving, just taking a loooong time, but the whole not replying to me thing is not exactly putting my mind at rest.
14. Hi, The search for my perfect P bass pickup continues.... I've tried this out for a while, and although it's very good, it's not quite what I'm after. This is the 'Raised A' style p'up to replicate the original. I've had it in the bass for about 2 months and used it around 5 times at gigs and rehearsals. All packaging is intact, including the lovely cloth bag. It's basically new, although these pickups are 'aged' by Seymour Duncan giving them a bit of a road worn appearance. I would consider trades for other Precision pickups, including the Wizard Trad or the Seymour Duncan SPB-2 Vintage, plus a bit of cash my way if they are used. I can only find this for sale online in the UK from Dolphin Music for the slightly optimistic sum of £132. I bought it new via a dealer on US ebay, and I believe it ended up around £85 to the door. On that basis, I'd let it go for £65 delivered, but I'd prefer a trade for something thumpy, and definitely not scooped or modern sounding. Thanks
15. Lovely, cannot believe this is still here. I'd have it if funds allowed. Right bass, wrong time unfortunately.
16.
Is this to the Streamliner or the guy who is talking about the Terror? Because this is my Streamliner tread
Ooh get you!
17. Hey guys, How would you compare this to the Bass Terror?
18.
I'm waiting on my compact It's hard, but I've heard it's worth it!
Me too! Ordered it around 3 weeks ago. And I will be pairing it with a Bass Terror! Can't wait.
19. Right guys, for a while now I thought I was imagining this, but at rehearsal last night it was obvious I haven't been. My bass terror has been quieter than normal. I first noticed at a gig about 6 months ago, it didn't have the clout it normally had, and I had to turn up more than normal. I figured it was the room or something. Anyway, about halfway through the gig, it suddenly jumped up in volume, and was back to normal. This has happened a few times now, but most of the time it stays a bit quiet, and the volume jump doesn't happen. It doesn't have the same punch as normal, and the note definition is quite bad. It seems to become boomy and less defined, requiring more volume, although no matter how loud I go I struggle to hear my actual notes, it just seems like I'm moving more air. Last night it started off like this, as normal, but the volume jump occured about half way through the rehearsal after we'd had a break. When I came back it was way louder and sounded far better. I could hear what I was playing. Everybody noticed it, so I know it wasn't my imagination! It's happened with 3 different basses now, so it's not that, and the active/passive swtich appears to be working as normal. I replaced the preamp valves with Tung-Sols not long before this started happening. Could it be linked?
20. Matt bought a pickup from me, great communication and fast payment, no problems here.
21. Great price, given what some of the Jap stuff has been up for lately.
22.
I'd be interested. But I have seen one on ebay for £400 with a cab. I would only be willing to pay £300?
Buy that one then!
23. I'm a devoted precision bass player, but recently I have noticed a few things lately which have me considering buying a Jazz. The first was digging out my Adam Black Acoustic, with a 1.5" nut width, and finding it effortless to play. The action is nowhere near as low as my Precisions, in fact it needs a luthier to lower the bridge, but my left hand just found the skinnier neck an easy reach, all over the fretboard. I tried a few runs I sometimes struggle with on the Precisions, and it was no problem at all. This may be amplified by the fact that both my precisions have chunky '57 style necks. I don't have the longest fingers, and had previously stayed away from skinny necks as I tended to wrap my left hand guitar-style around the neck, but I seem to have disciplined this out of myself. The second was becoming aware of the extra detail I was putting into my bass lines, but how it often felt I couldn't get away with adding too much in there. Even keeping the notes as muted as possible, I feel too many notes too quickly do not roll easily through the mix with 'my' P sound. The third was experimenting with different pickups. I'd noticed at rehearsals I had struggled to hear myself, I could feel myself, the bass was shifting some serious air, but the actual notes were not as defined as I'd hoped. After trying a few, and going from too weak, to too grindy, to too boomy, I'm now questioning whether I need the power of the P bass sound after all. What do you guys think? Neck-wise, I'd still like something chunky and deep, but with the reduced width of a jazz. I also really favour the 7.25" neck radius, but have no idea if this was ever available on any jazz, let alone modern jazz basses. I've been looking at the Vintage Modified '77 Squiers, as the perfect 'gamble' bass. If i don't like them , I can move it on. As far as I can tell, there is a TTS with maple and a black with maple, and they both look awesome.
