Try a neck through warwick, the necks are far batter, more so on the earlier basses. Someone said in a previous post, that they all felt the same including Stage 1 etc, not correct IMHO I've owned many warwicks, probably not as many as WH, but a good few and they do vary Some bargain Stage 1's out there, also consider, if you find a bass like that and it is right apart from a slightly thick neck, a "neck shave" by someone like the Bass Gallery isn't a lot of money and by removing a relativley small amount of wood, it can make a huge difference. Warwick are offering custom neck profiles but the upcharge was HUGE last time I looked T

I had a Modulus VJ a few years back, when I got it, the action was set too high, everything else looked fine, figured a good set up would sort it, then I discovered its lack of truss rod! Was never able to get it where I wanted it, suited a player who liked a higher action and heavier gauge strings. Very unfortunate though, as it was a nice sounding bass! It got sold and the buyer was happy! Had lots of Statii over many years, love 'em, never had any issues with them, but not had very earlier, pre truss rod necks. Always like the feel of these necks, the slight flat across the back make a big difference IMHO! Retroactive Jazz basses give me serious GAS, you just don't see too many around! Tony

I've always found that the neck thru basses have the better, slimmer feeling necks, even though the nut width is identical on nearly all models except the Dolphin 4 string. Even a newish Stage 1 feels fine, there is, as already mentioned still some variation in neck thickness in the same models thru the years. For me a Stage 1 4 string represents real good value if you look at the prices they are going for, unless you want a specific pick up set up such as the $$, I reckon it's worth trying to scrape together the extra dollar!! I Dolphin 5, this has a nice neck, if anything the string spacing is a little too tight for me, the Dolpohin rnge seems to be the opposite of the Stage 1 basses, the Dolphin 4 has a wider nut than the Stage 1 4 string, yet the Stage 1 5 string goes down the broad neck route whilst the Dolphin is narrower. Warwci now offer a custom neck profile thru their custom shop, it's a lot of $$ though. I spoke to a UK custom geezer a few years back who said it was real easy to shave warwick necks down so they feel a lot slimmer, it doesn't take a lot of wood, you just gotta know where to take it from!
