    I'm pretty much the opposite, I love to solo the Jazz snarl bringing in just a little bit of Precision grunt to taste, or vice versa. This seems to me to be the whole point of a P/J! Horses and courses eh 👍

    I don't get the switch thing though, it doesn't allow any balancing between PUPs which is pretty important on a PJ after all (unless you do away with tone control), or am I missing something?

    One or two stacked pots would have been so much better. I doubt that was done by NWG, it's very poor, I assume the seller simply bough the parts from them and did a DIY mod/install. If it landed chez Beedster I would rewire with stacks and fill the hole, it would bug me otherwise 🤔

    Yep, but if O/P's guitarist is using 150w, none of the figures above matter? I think the problem is that plenty of combos will go loud - i.e., could go even louder - but in my experience most will not sound great doing so. Even the best bass combo ever made - Mesa Walkabout 12 - can struggle when things get messy. OK, it can compete in most situations, but it may not compete in the optimal way (and as far as I'm concerned I don't want my amp to compete I want it to win!). So, I moved from the Walkabout combo which was struggling at times, to the Walkabout head with two Bag End 12 and voila, still an easy load in/out, but both the volume and the tone I was after 👍

    Yep that’s an ugly mod likely the combined result of limited cavity space and lack of circuit design imagination or skill. Shame

    Unlike on a P/J there will also be a degree of scoop with both P-PUPs set at the same output level, which is not dissimilar to that you'd find on a Jazz Bass but sufficiently different to be preferable to some players I'd suspect 👍

    On the whole the tone at the bridge is less substantial than the neck PUP but probably a little beefier than would be the case with most J-PUPs in the same position. The downside of a P-PUP in that position by comparison with a J-PUP is that output on the D and G strings - for which the PUP is VERY close to the bridge - tends to be a little lower than that of the A and E so it's worth raising the treble side and lowering the bass side of the bridge PUP accordingly (it was to correct for this that some manufacturers such as in the photo by @silverfoxnik above reversed the position of the two sides of the PUPs, although frankly if the configuration above was good enough for Fender in one of their better periods in terms of design and engineering it's probably good enough for most people also). I have come back to look at this bass many many many times over the last few months as I have a rather lovely (and substantial) Warmoth fretless Precision neck with ebony board that I suspect would work very well with that body and especially those PUPs 👍

    300w into 4ohms. One of the truly iconic amps, Mesa really poured in a lot of their secret sauce when designing it. As a small/lightweight backup to my M-Pulse 600 I have a WD-800 which in many respects is a better unit than the Walkabout in terms of power and tone control, but if I didn't have either the WD and MP I'd happily get another Walkabout. In fact I might do so anyway

    By which I mean that it sound different to pretty much every other amp I've owned, including the M-Pulse 360 or 600 which are to all intents more powerful/versatile versions of the Walkabout, and I doubt any head will replicate it exactly if that's what you're after

    Whether it's your thing or not, the Walkabout has a pretty unique tone. Best bet to my mind is to but the one on here at present, IIRC it's under £500

    Welcome Langy, great to have you here, and as has been said, we've probably all listened to your playing many many times over. I took the Electronic Music Techology Programme at LCF in the early 80's and we used to pop over to Sarm East regularly - ABC were often in around then IIRC. As studios go, it really was the place to be, and some incredible recordings came out of it. It must have been incredible to be part of it and I expect you have some stories.......
