1.
Hi guys Thinking about a rick but I play in dropped tuning - B standad. I can't see any 5ers a available on their site and having emailed a couple of weeks ago had no response. I wondered if anyone had dropped the standard tuning on theirs to a b standard set up and how that was panning out, or whether there were any ideas.... Appreciate the input. Cheers
I love Rics but a 5 is a step too far given rarity, meaning you'd be unlikely to play before you buy, and QC issues, meaning if you get a bad one it will be BAD (something that is of course multiplied significantly with a 5). This is all in the context of my having heard generally negative things about the few 5s Ric did produce, especially the B. Have you tried a 4 strung B-D yet, that would have to be the logical start point?
2.
Ha ha. That did make me laugh. The mysteries of the Wal pre-amp. Someone should write a book on it. Or a thesis perhaps?
Dr Synchro
3.
Brilliant, looks like it's going to be a long road to becoming a fully competent Wal operator. It's funny you should say it can't do a P tone as I thought I nailed the fat 70's funk vibe last night, using the 'bass' pickup only with the associated mystery knob set to 5..
Mystery knob never does the same tone twice though Jay, will sound like a flute next time you use it
4.
Between you and our mutual Wal-loving friend, I think I'll have to. I just need to enroll on the Wal preamp course and I'll be sorted.
Courses, you'll need the undergrad to get a usable tone, the MSc to get those tones consistently, and the PhD to enable you to get every tone possible out of it. The problem I had with Wals live was that the tones I loved solo'd didn't work, so I resorted to finding Jazz- and Stingray-like tones (even Wal can't do a decent Precision), which begged the question of whether it was really worth taking £3k's worth of early 80's vintage bass to the Dog and Duck. The flip side is that once you take the time to find the unique Wal tones that do work, nothing else comes close.
5. Mate, live it's the truth, I've see you playing a few different basses and whilst the basses are really different sounding solo'd, in the mix there's not much in it. But keep the Wal
6. Due to work commitments I'll have to withdraw this for a while after this weekend, so will entertain reasonable offers today and tomorrow
7.
Worth it just for the peli case!
It's quite a remarkable thing the case, I always feel like I'm opening something from another dimension
8. Hello mate, needs to go into an amp live (either a normal rig or power amp only, but through headphones it's lovely. Obviously great for recording also. Chris
9.
These are fantastic pres - I actually prefer them to valve pres (though I'm sure others will have a different preference) Seen on stages and in studios all over the world - an industry standard for bass - and the case is a massive bonus!
Can't disagree with any of that
10.
I'm not convinced that Newcastle is in Europe ...
Fair point Jack, but it does require a courier
11. In reply to PMs, postage in UK will be around £15-20 fully insured (I won't send without insurance). If overseas postage will be between £25-30. Last time I sold an item to a fellow bassist in Europe I was hit by a significant PayPal fee for the currency conversion, so payment needs to be in £ with any fee for conversion at the seller's end, sorry. Price is also firm I'm afraid. Apologies of this all seems hostile but it's better to make this clear now than after we've agreed a deal! Cheers Chris
12. Needs no introduction really, bought on here a couple of years back http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2973373 it's had too little use since, and I'm trying to reduce the amount of studio gear I have into one rack unit. Perfect working order, and comes in the type of hard case that will survive even a Parcelforce driver on a Friday afternoon Once again the BC uploader has played havoc with my photos, come back Photobucket, all is forgiven
13. Photos as promised. It is 100% immaculate, and will arrive at your door pretty much the same as it arrived at mine from the factory. I have no idea why the BC uplaoder rotates photos, but no matter how I rotate them ahead of uploading, the outcome is the same.......
14.
You've thrown down the gauntlet there!
Ha ha, well it's now sold and will be going into the back of the big red courier van very shortly. Time will tell
15. I LOVE that bass, my old Gherson was an awesome bass (Rick copy), and something about this reminds me of that. £125? Sale of the f*****g century
16.
can you run a guitar through this as well as a bass
Yes, and although I've not done it, you can do both at the same time using entirely independent patches on each. It's got two independent channels with a mic and instrument input on each. I bought it because I thought I would use all the functionality but as I use it exclusively in the studio, I've got multi-channel functionality anyway. I also thought that running two mics (on acoustic guitar) into this and running hardware FX before going into the desk and using plug-ins might save some processing power but I've got too many units and I realised I'm starting to complicate what was supposed to be a very simple studio set up again (bloody eBay/Basschat)! I imagine that live it would have pretty much every base/bass covered to be honest. Chris
17. Shameless plug but this is a good unit for bass/guitar/vox, two channels can also be run simultaneously http://basschat.co.uk/topic/312041-fs-line-6-pod-x3-pro-fxmodel-for-bassguitarvox/ Chris
18. Great piece of kit both live and in the studio (Sound on Sound review here https://www.soundons...ne-6-pod-x3-pro). This comes in a Gator 4u rack case with stage light. Recent ebay purchase but have too many pres/FX units and don;t have space for another rack unit! Original eBay listing at http://www.ebay.co.u...vip=true&rt=nc. Works exactly as it should and is in very good condition. Gator rack case means that even Parcelforce won;t be able to break it
19. Photobucket's demise has ruined bass browsing for me! Jack, I'm sure would work something out excuse wise....
20.
Depends how serious you are. If you really want an old-school sound which sounds great at rehearsal volumes, can handle small gigs, and is more-or-less transportable then get yourself an early 70s WEM Dominator 25 - the one with the 15" Celestion. Superb open-backed sound, 15W of valve power, looks cool as f***. They turn up quite frequently on eBay. Don't pay more than £400.
Yep, I sold mine here recently and whilst it didn't have the mojo of a B-15 it did a pretty fine impersonation; a f*****g glorious sounding amp that punched well above its weight in every respect. One of the best tones I've ever managed to produce was a late 70's Yamaha BB1200 through the WEM, total cost less than £800, tone indistinguishable from a pre-CBS Precision through a '64 B-15.
21. The big daddy of all pre-amps! Lovely piece of kit, in fact potentially the best at what it does, but I've opted for Jack's Demeter VTBP-201 this week simply (and superficially) because I can rack mount it. I had two of these and this has seen virtually no use and will be sent in its original box/packaging. Details here http://www.adesignsa...tube-direct-box I seem to have used all my storage space for photos (why did Photobucket mess it up for us all) so will have to clear some space before I post pics. However be assured it's in 100% absolutely perfect condition. Chris
22. I've been buying and selling here for 15 years and 99% of the time folks are 100% reliable, but I would not do a trade deal overseas, far easier for one of you to sell their respective instrument and buy the other's
23. I met Paul McCartney about 30 years ago and didn't recognise him. Only realised it was the man himself after a mate pointed out how cool/disinterested I'd been in the presence of music royalty. In hindsight it seems really quite odd because he's an extraordinarily recognisable person (although I was most certainly not a fan of either the man or his music at the time, something that has changed significantly since, certainly in relation to his bass playing, musicality and songwriting). Having said this, he appeared not to recognise me either, so the disinterest was mutual
24. What a great bass. It took me about 15 years of trial and error with basses to realise the benefits of a Jazz Bass with a Precision neck, in short. My current Jazz - which weighs in at about 13lbs - has an Indian Rosewood body and a fat and wide Precision cocobolo/ebony neck, and it sounds huge irrespective of which PUPs are in there. Some people say that neck dimensions make no difference to tone
