  1. Thanks. Once my G&L arrives and takes over being My Bass With Flats, I'll try those, I think they'll suit that setting better than the Chromes I've on my TRBX atm. Getting back to BBs, yesterday I was watching Yamaha's own demo video of the 734 on YouTube and thinking what a terrible job it did of making me want one:
  2. Still got another two months of waving a begging bowl under Rishi Sunak's nose to looking forward to 😀
  3. Doing one's tax return two months before the end of the tax year seems a bit fatalistic.
  4. Tuesday 6 April will be the most action packed day of my year, for sure.
  5. Anyone else intending to have got their 2020/2021 tax return submitted by Wed 7 Apr?
  6. Now I've found that setting, I'm wondering what it might be like combined with a set of, say, Rotosound Swing Bass
  7. I feel obliged to note that Hermes delivered a parcel to me today without damaging it or stealing it. Impressive stuff!
  8. Seeing that I was intending to buy a Auralex Gramma pad, Brian got in touch offering me his in excellent condition for an extremely reasonable price. A few days later and it's now happily sat under my amp. The brown paper wrapping the box was done so nicely that I regret not taking a photo of it! Lovely when people put real effort in, no matter how low the price 😊
  9. Chord VI in F minor is "C# major"? Mkay 😁
  10. It was quite nice leaving off reading that thread and deciding not to return to it.... *meaningful look*
  11. I've got Chromes on it, so theres no shortage of bass.... I started flat, added mids until there was a satisfying warmth, took off treble until the frizzy clatter was gone, and then turned down the bass slowly until the muddiness had gone, leaving a focused and - to my ears - fairly modern sound. The burr of the flats wasnt entirely removed, but the sound is quite sleek. Sounds best with both pickups on - I suppose because that's putting in a harmonically rich sound which is then being constricted. Since I like a bass to sound bassy, it would never have occurred to me to take this approach. I haven't read many compliments about the BB73x's active preamp, so I'm wondering if this combination would be just as satisfying on one of them.
  12. Somewhere on TB there was a post saying the trick with the TRBX's 3-band EQ is to raise the mids and lower both treble and bass (or vice versa) So I put the battery back in and tried it and, what do you know, a noise I like coming out of that preamp. Treble and bass both -40, the mid +60. (Didn't think much of it vice versa, but then I wouldn't.) Anyway, idle curiosity has me wondering, is the same true with the BB734a's 3-band EQ?
  13. When Yamaha decide to make the Ricky Rioli signature BB, I shall insist that it be called the RD350
  14. I called mine 'Grandma', does this mean I'm obliged to called it a 'Yamha'? 😕
  15. I only ever play it on passive - couldn't find anything for me in the active controls
  16. Is the preamp in the 735a the same as the one in the TRBX504/505/604/605?
  17. A quick google produces this interesting thread: Phil Jones H-850 headphones and Edifier H850 the same? Thank you!
  18. I've found a thread from 2016 full of headphone recommendations....most of which look at bit pricey for my lo-fi soul. These look good... Phil Jones Bass H-850 Closed Back Headphones ....I think? £74 delivered.
  19. I'm glad I added this ps, as thanks to it I've now got one headed my way
  20. I'm also thinking of getting an Auralex Gramma pad for the amp to sit on, to cut out one of the two routes the noise I make passes through the building. Daft price, but good for my conscience....
  21. Problem A - I haven't put on a pair of headphones since I discovered a few years ago that my habit of listening to my ipod on the tube had given me some entry-level tinnitus. It comes and goes, sounding like silvery cicadas, and is never annoying. I really don't want to make it worse. Problem B - where I live, I've neighbours above and below and on both sides, and the flimsy building is an acoustic marvel for transmitting sound, and so through each day my playing is a combination of moderate, quiet and unplugged. My Peavey practice amp is constantly chomping at the bit. So I could do with adding headphones to my repertoire, but need to be careful, and am almost entirely ignorant of what's what. (When I was a kid I had a pair of Sennheisers that had a seeming flat foam-covered panel against the ear, and were gently domed on the outside. That sort of design doesnt seem to exist anymore.) Firstly, are noise-cancelling headphones any good for practising with, or do they mess with the tone? I live on a main road, so there is a little bit of traffic noise. Secondly, would open back headphones be better for not annoying my tinnitus? Sound leaking out within my home isn't a problem.
  22. On the website of one of the string manufacturers is a set of 0'15" long soundclips of all their different strings, demoed by Steve Araujo. I listened through and thought, "they all sound like Steve Araujo.... just as every pickup on every G&L sounds like Steve Araujo...." ...and then the penny dropped.
  23. Thank you for all that 😊 The tweed version is currently £55, and delivery is £4.50 I also found PMT selling something similar to the standard one, again for £50 Tourtech bass guitar hard case
