1. £40 between you isn't a massive amount, treat it as a rehearsal (but better as there will probably be a stage, bigger P.A, monitors etc) And look at it as a chance to play to a decent size crowd.... My band recently did a "charity" gig, to raise funds for the community centre that it was held in. The organiser wanted the bands in by 7pm, which meant I had to take the day off work because I couldn't guarantee I could be there early enough. I then had to sit around watching 3 other bands before our set and one band after, before we could load out.... So, a days pay lost, and about 4 drinks each for me and my girlfriend... I'd have been better off going to work, turning up without playing and chucking £50 in the collection bucket! Mind you, we did get the "exposure" of playing to the other bands and about 6 locals.....
 2. Hmmm.... Richard Thompson - Henry The Human Fly The Felice Brothers - The Felice Brothers Fairport Convention - Liege And Lief Smashing Pumpkins - Gish Langhorne Slim & The Law - The Way We Move Echo & The Bunnymen - Crocodiles Wah! - The Maverick Years John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett - John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett Book would be Lord Of The Flies, but I'm struggling to think of a luxury item.....
 3. I find her voice er, irritating and her material boring. Then again, she could well say the same about me...
 4. I remember seeing a pretty dire band called Fashion, supported by an equally dire Kajagoogoo sometime in the early 80's. Further back, I saw a band called The Dodgers supporting The Steve Gibbons Band and a band called Fischer Z supporting someone who I can't remember, somewhere! More notable bands that I've seen who were not at their best would include, New Order, Smashing Pumpkins, The Lemonheads, The Proclaimers and The Smiths.
 5. I've seen loads of crap bands over the years, but the one that stands out for me was UFO about 1978. Got given a ticket at the last minute and went along. Fell asleep in a seat on the balcony. The support band were called Marseille, I think..... They were bobbins too.
 6. One of these.... or one of these....
 7. The quote button doesn't work using internet explorer (well, not on my pc at any rate) I now use another browser (Opera) and it works fine....
 8.
Do you think more people will visit his pub knowing that he is not averse to assaulting young women?
No, I don't think that, but maybe he does!
 9.
So, the owner/perpetrator is in on it! What's in it for him? Do you think more people will visit his pub knowing that he is not averse to assaulting young women?
Actually, I was thinking more of a stunt by the band and Pete Way (who originally posted the story on Facebook, then mentioned HIS new album at the end of the post) But (and this is a big but) as someone once said "any publicity is good publicity, as long as they spell your name right" I just get the feeling there is more to this than meets the eye.
 10. I've also heard a lot worse (including some bands I've played in ) which is what makes me think the whole thing is a publicity stunt.
 11. Smacks of publicity stunt to me.... Pete Way posted something about this to a fb group I'm in too.... Then managed to mention his new album at the end of it
 12. Hmmm, there was a time when I was happy enough to play for free..... You know, charity gigs and festivals etc. When I was in an originals band in the 90's I even paid to play at London venues. But, nowdays I'm beginning to think differently. I played a gig last night, to raise money for the community centre where it was held, with 3 other bands and a solo singer. All 5 acts played for nothing, dragging themselves along and arriving before 7pm as requested. This meant I had to take the day off work to make sure I could get there that early ( I can't always be sure of getting home before then on a Friday) so that's a days pay it's cost me to start with. My band played for 45 minutes, half the time we would play for a paid pub gig (say £75 for the band?) And then we had to buy our own drinks all night as we weren't allowed to load out til after the last band had finished. So it's probably cost me getting on towards £100 just to play for 45 minutes.... I would've been better off just putting a £50 note in the collection bucket! The PA and sound engineer were provided by a local company who do lots of events around here over the summer and I doubt that they did it for nothing, so why did the bands? After all, nobody came there to look at the PA speakers, the desk or to listen to the quality of the engineers mixing. They came to see the bands!
 13.
So was I!
Yeah, sorry didn't mean to sound patronising
 14.
Bargain?, looks like its been rescued from a fire!
I was being ironic..... Take a £199 bass, probably cost about £75 s/h.... trash it a bit then put it on Ebay for £250! Wish I'd thought of that....
 15. Grab yourself a bargain here.... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Squire-by-Fender-Bronco-Affinity-70s-Bass-Black-Relic-Vintage-/121802267496?hash=item1c5bfb1b68:g:askAAOSwT5tWM~I8
 16. Saw Richard Thompson a few weeks ago in Nottingham, excellent as always. A couple of weeks before that I saw The Felice Brothers in a really small venue in Birmingham, I thought they were really, really good..... Mind you, that may have partly been due to the fact that I was only about 4 feet away from them (I don't go to many standing gigs nowdays)
 17.
Yes, of course it should.... I can't believe that one got past me!
Actually, there is an apostrophe in there, but it's not really visible because of the font used....
 18.
Shouldn't Doctor K's Gastric band have an apostrophe?
Yes, of course it should.... I can't believe that one got past me!
 19.
Opened up 2 pages for a very fleeting look...and the thing that screamed out ...was pub pub. Pub bands are fine... but you are then caught between the purpose and the cost of the website. I don't think pub bands can really justify a good website in terms of cost... and to get a worthwhile site you'll need GOOD content which is not that easy or cheap to come by. If anyone is looking at your band for a party..and therefore pay better money, they aren't going to do it from that website, IMO... Unknown contacts who search and find this site will pass on it almost straight away, IMO....but the catch 22 is can you justify to spend £1k or so to do the job? The question about what the purpose is in the post above...is most relevant. The effort isn't so bad... but depends what you want to achieve.and how cost effective it is.
It hasn't cost anything, domain name and hosting is free, as is Wix.... We couldn't justify spending anything at all really, as we don't expect many people will look at it. It's main function will be to let people who see us at gigs, know when and where we are next playing I suppose.
 20.
Honestly? It looks like a few hours work. That’s not meant to sound deliberately aloof. It’s just a bog standard band website: it doesn’t really slap me around the face with interest; but equally I’ve seen worse! Likes:

The black and white theme.
Dislikes:

The visitor counter at the bottom of the page. Outdated, pointless and detrimental. I don’t want to know that I’m one of only 200 or so people who have visited your website.
Image gallery: some of the photos are very poor quality. You’d be better off removing them - and ideally adding some video.
It doesn’t optimise on my mobile: it appears as a thin strip in the middle of my mobile browser (iOS 9.1).
Simply put, it looks very amateurish. But then you've so far only spent a few hours on it, granted. And maybe amateurish is perfectly fine for the purpose of your band - ? That's not for me to say. I'd personally prefer to run a Facebook page rather than a website of this sort. Most people/punters are familiar with the limitations of Facebook; whereas the bar is being raised increasingly high in terms of our expectations when it comes to websites. Unless web design your profession (and I'm assuming it's not), then I'd strongly recommend investing some gig earnings in getting someone to do a proper job of it. Unless, as mentioned, a website of this type is perfectly fine for the purpose of your band and what you hope to achieve. In which case ignore everything I've just said and keep having fun
I agree some of the photo's are poor, hopefully we'll have some new ones up there soon. We are a new band, and as such, we've not had many opportunities to get some live pics taken. I understand that the counter looks a bit old hat, I may be able to make that invisible on the site, but visible to me when I update. No, I'm definitely not involved in website design, lol, I believe that's obvious, which is why I've asked for advice on here And yes, it is only a few hours work, using a generic band template, but compared to our guitarists previous attempt it looks (IMO) a lot more professional. I'm not sure it's possible to optimise it for mobile viewing, I will try and look into that when I have time. We are a bunch of amateur, weekend warriors who really only need a website for people to find out where our next gig is, or to contact us if they want to book us. I doubt that we'll ever be selling anything from it or anything like that.
 21. Thanks for the comments everyone, I am trying to take it all on board! The site is very much "work in progress" though I don't really want to go too far with it. I like the idea of keeping it simple. Technically, I'm not very savvy with this kind of thing, so Wix seems ideal for me, though I'm guessing it has it's limitations.... We are planning some demo's soon, so something will be added, and probably a links page too, though I'm wary about adding too many pages... Anyway, it's (in my mind) a massive improvement on what we had before and with your input I'm sure it will soon get the gig offers rolling in!
 22. Yes, with a bit of luck we will be able to replace the grainy phone pics with something a bit more professional looking (sans dartboard, hopefully) fairly soon.... And I agree, dividing the gig page into "past" and "upcoming" sections seems like a good idea... I do have an iphone video on my laptop, I resisted using it and won't be considering it as suitable promotion material despite the fact that the actual performance is quite good...
 23.
To sound twice as loud as 125w you'd need 1250w. There's also the matter of maximum driver excursion. Once that's reached more power applied won't make it louder, it will only add distortion. If your cab is loaded with 40 year old drivers chances are they run out of excursion around 40-50 watts each.
I understand that Bill, I know that to get double the loudness, you need x10 the wattage. What I don't understand is why x4 the power makes no noticable difference. At the time I was doing the A/B comparison, I had replaced the original units with 300w Eminence drivers as I didn't want to risk the originals with the higher output from the Ashdown.
 24.
The volume control acts like a water valve. One may configure a valve to be fully open with 1/4 turn, 1/2 turn. 3/4 turn or for that matter with ten turns.
Understood, maybe he should have used this analogy in Spinal Tap? Any explanation why my 575w Ashdown Head is (seems) no louder than my 125w Acoustic head through the same cab?
 25. Not sure about auto play stuff....would rather people had the choice to play it if they wanted to....
