1. now SOLD Price drop now £120 Hi, For sale this noisy beast of an amp. This is the version 1, which is no longer sold, but as far as I can tell there are no earth shattering changes to the version 2 model. 150W 2x12" Celestion 12" speakers 4 button footswitch USB connectivity Sexy vintage look Great amp and cab modelling and very usable effects. Ideal for a beginner and will hold it's own in most gig environments. In great condition; never gigged. Based in Cambridge. Pickup only for this one please (will consider meet up within a short distance). No trades currently. Yours for the measly sum of £120 Go on, treat yourself. Cheers, Andy
2. Hi, As I've gone back to the old school amp-wise, I have this smashing head for sale. Not much to say as I'm sure everyone knows all about them, but here's a link if you don't: http://www.genzbenz....&sid=675&cid=95 900 watts of valvey goodness in a light and tiny box; brilliant. Now discontinued, so destined to be a collectors piece... well, maybe... No issues with this. Has been racked since new, so only scratches from doing this. I have the rubber feet and can put back on if needed. Priced to sell as I know there have been a lot of these for sale recently: £350 Based in Cambridge and would prefer pickup, but would arrange meet up within 50 miles if needed. Not interested in trades (unless someone has an EBS hd350 or GK 1001RB; might consider these?) Any questions just let me know. Cheers, Andy
3. Hi, Great piece of kit this, but I no longer use. See link for good idea of what it does: http://www.tc-helico...one-correct-xt/ Basically it sits between your mic and desk, and provides all in one eq, compression, anti-feedback, de-esser and chromatic pitch correction in one diddy unit. I bought it for the anti-feedback really, and it does a cracking job at this. No more squawking from the PA if you're in a band that does it's own sound. It also just makes vocals sound 'right' without endless tweaking (each section just being 'one knob' controlled) These are retailing at around £200, so a bargain at £100 I'd say. Includes original box and power adapter. Based in Cambridge and would prefer collection or meet up within 20 miles, but could post for a little more dosh. Feel free to ask questions. Cheers, Andy
4. Price drop: £600 as long as not splitting Hi All, For sale as I have upgraded and need some room!: Mackie Pro FX 22 Desk - £380 Mackie Carry case for Pro FX 22 Desk - Free with desk 2x Mackie Thump TH12a powered speakers - £150 each (£300 the pair) Retail value for this caboodle is in region of £1250, so priced to sell here for £600 the lot. Pro Fx 22 Very little usage on the desk. All in perfect working order. Roughly around 3 years old. 22 channels, 16 XLR, 4 stereo channels, 4 channels have 'one knob' compression, 3 band EQs with sweepable mids, graphic for main output or monitors, good quality usable internal effects. Would suit a band that needs to mic a kit, but I'm selling for less than the price of the equivalent 16 channel desk. Carry case has a few white dust marks on it, but otherwise in perfect condition. http://www.mackie.co...oducts/profx22/ Thump TH12a Speakers 2 x 400w (Class D), 12" speakers with high frequency compression drivers, great for mains or monitors (tilt back design). 3 band EQ with sweepable mids on the back. XLR in and out. Very light. Some minor scuffs from use, but nothing major. http://www.mackie.com/products/thump/ Not interested in trades as I need the space. Based in Cambridge and would prefer pick-up or meet within around 50 miles due to size. Happy to split but would only sell speakers as a pair. Happy to answer any questions or arrange viewing. Cheers, Andy
5. '...such a feeble drummer...' Hmm, not sure I'd entirely agree with his assessment. Listening to your link to the unmixed tracks, the drum sounds way better (to me) than whatever he did with them. There's a lot of timing issues, but the individual hits don't sound too uneven, and the kick sounds pretty good. There are some odd reverbs and gates on the 'unmixed' tracks though that would be a pain to work with. Were they recorded when you were tracking? If not it's best to remember to track things as dry as possible; you can add any effects at a later stage, but like salt in your cooking you can't take it out later. I still think it would be good for you to hear another mixer taking a shot at it.
6. Cheers all; that's reassuring! (Btw, my amps a lot older than 2 weeks old
7. Just about ready to submit this one. Are we K-metering this month?
8. Can I get SVT3 owners thoughts on the Tube Drive control? As people say, it does run counter-intuitively in that it is supposed to be more 'tubey' turning anticlockwise, but really all mine seems to do is make the volume quieter and slightly more dull! I'm certainly not complaining, as the head sounds generally valvey anyway, but wondered if it's something wrong with my head? I've had it serviced and new valves (and biased) but it's just the same. Anybody else find it useful knob? Also, while I'm at it, I tend to run the gain so that the peak LED comes on nearly all the time. It doesn't distort unpleasantly, in fact it sounds great, but am I damaging the head or shortening the valve lifespan by doing this? A.
9. He's not someone I'd paid much attention to before, but after watching the film The Way Way Back and hearing his track Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley on the soundtrack I started reading a bit about him. Turns out the backing band for his album of the same name in 1974 was The Meters! (And a great album it is too!) And also Addicted To Love was produced by Bernard Edwards! (And I presume he played bass on it by the sound of things?) Well, I found it interesting anyway... (p.s. hope this doesn't cause confusion with any other Robert Palmers who might frequent these parts!)
10. Haha, guitarists very rarely seem to 'get' drums. Yes, tambourine, acoustic guitar, bouzouki, maracas; anything can flesh out a track sonically. There are many ways to look at it, but after you've got the main instruments down you have to think what is going to fill up the sound from left to right, and from high to low frequency? It's rare that guitar bass and drums can do this alone and maintain interest over an album (but can be done). More often than not you'll need contrasts between lots of instruments and wide panning, and few instruments with narrow panning to break up sections of a song.
11. It's true that a lot of mixing choices are subjective, but it sounds like the mix engineer didn't have any discussion with you about what you wanted from the mix. He also seems to have made some unusual decisions for a modern recording; did he play guitar in the 80s? It certainly sounds like a guitarists take on drums. There is a big lack of punch to them that is easily dialled in on Logic, even just using drum presets. This would be easily demonstrated to him by taking him some music you would like it to sound like to reference against. Sorry to say I wouldn't have high hopes for him delivering what you're after. Although mastering can add some punch to tracks, it's not going to save this one I'm afraid. Imagine it like adding an Instagram filter to a photo; it might look a little cooler, but if the original photo's rubbish, it's still going to look rubbish. I think the idea of handing the tracks over for Basschats mixing competition is good. It would certainly make you aware of how many different ways there are mix a song. I would say though that the tracks sound like they could do with more instrumentation; most recordings will have a few more bells and whistles in (sometimes literally). But if you're just after a live sounding demo then that's a different matter. A.
12. I'd say they're just two very different beasts. Both do valve tones, but with completely different vibes. I personally found the MarkBass TTE 500 much closer to an Ampeg tone than the Streamliner. The Ampeg has got pretty comprehensive tone shaping, so for money has greater variability. I find the Streamliner always sounds like a Streamliner.
13. I've recently purchased an SVT3 after using a GB Streamliner 900. I never got past around 9 o'clock on the Streamliner's master, but I'm having to but the Ampeg to around 12 o'clock for the equivalent volume (I'm using Bergantino 1x12 cabs). I reckon it's fine for pubs and small halls, and could probably do more with an 8x10. I find the punch is much better than the class D heads. It's hard to define, but it just feels more oldschool; like the sound is hitting you rather than washing over you. The valve drive is very different from the rather fizzy Streamliner. Mine doesn't seem to do proper dirt but does that wonderful Ampeg 'clank'. The tone is just right out the box. No faffing around. Seems to pair better with passive than active basses, but that might just be my ears. It seems to be a good compromise of weight to power. Certainly if Class Ds are not your thing, it's about as heavy as you'd want to go without a trolley/roadie/chiropractor. A
14. To work out a minor key signature you have to find the relative major. This is the key 3 semitones up. So for A minor go up 3 semitones and you have C major (imagine it on a piano keyboard if that helps.) C is therefore the relative major and has the same key signature as A minor, ie no sharps or flats. For another example, G minor. If you go up 3 semitones from G you get to Bb, so G minor has the same key signature as Bb major: 2 flats - Bb and Eb. Note that it's NOT A# major - the rule is you have to go through 3 separate letter names when going up the semitones, ie G, Ab, A, Bb. Note there are other things to know about harmonic and melodic minors!
15. I'm porous with travel fever But I'm so glad to be on my own Still, somehow the slightest touch of a stranger Sets up trembling in my bones I know no one's going to show me everything We come and go unknown Each of us so deep and so superficial Between the forceps and the stone
16. I think your new mix is much improved. The wider panning, more reverb on snare, louder bass all work well. For me, I would now try to make the kick a little less boxy and work on the lead vocal, which to me sounds a bit brittle. Hard to pin down, but I think the vocals are a bit heavy in the high mids, and lack some 'air' in the very high end. I'm not sure what mix bus/mastering features the Zoom 1608 has, but I would be putting a little eq and compression over the mix to bring it together now (but that's personal taste). Andy
17. It might be useful to say what you're trying to get out of the mix, eg: is there any particular band or recording you'd like it to sound like? Also knowing what DAW you're working with would be good so people don't suggest the impossible! I'd say it's got a good volume balance at the moment. Panning is a bit narrow for my tastes, especially the backing vocals. The drums are sounding quite dated as they're completely dry and not had (any?) processing applied yet? Having said that it's got a certain charm at this point that it's easy to muck up with fiddling! Andy.
18. This site looks pretty good for the basics: http://www.musictheory.net/lessons I'd bear in mind that learning music theory properly can be like learning a new language, and might take longer than you would think (and a lot of it is pretty dull!)
19.
Someone told me that one of the Joni Mitchell songs with Jaco on it is a twelve-bar... if you can dig down through the arrangement and ornamentation. I forget which one
The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines? http://youtube.com/watch?v=JnpyCEUESEw
20. I use N-Track tuner. Seems to work pretty well.

Sandberg Panther

Great to hear some love for Panthers. I really think they're special instruments and very good value for the build quality and custom options. I've got the walnut faced fretless 5, and like it so much I've ordered an imbuia faced fretted, which is on it's way from Bass Direct to me as we speak. I got to choose the actual piece of wood from photos Sandberg sent over, and got ebony fingerboard with block inlays too. I can't wait to get it in my grubby mitts! Here are some pictures of the bad boy taken by Mark at Bass Direct prior to shipping. (Also should say it looks pretty much identical to the Sandberg configurator mock up that I made on their website; I was for some reason surprised at this!)
