I play thru an ABM EvoII 900 head and ABM 810 cab. Sound is awsome (even been told to turn the volume down at a festival 'cause it was competing with the PA!) Used the head in the studio too (even with my double bass thru it sounding good). I don't reckon you can judge an amp (or manufacturer) on the evidence of one bassist at a gig. My rig sounds like pants at the Beercart in Canterbury for example, because any bass at all triggers the stupid f***king sound limiter and I have to play really quietly with the bass turned right down.

Serial Number on Peghead Decal. U.S. made Fenders, starting in mid-1976 has the serial number on the peghead. Note the following number could be off as much as two years. Generally speaking, a "S" prefix equals the 1970's, "E" prefix equals the 1980's, and "N" prefix equals the 1990's. Note "E" and "N" prefix models are sometimes also Japanese-made (see below). 7600000 ("76" in bold) = 1976-1977 800000s = 1979-1981 1000000 to 8000000 = 1976-1981 (7 digits) S100000's-S600000's = 1979-1982 S700000's to S770000's = 1977 S740000's to S800000's = 1978 S810000's to S870000's = 1979 S880000's to S980000's = 1980 Yours could be a '79 (a fine year!)

A lot of this depends on how creative the producer(s) are. True, in my experience I've had producers / engineers DI my bass straight into the board, but I usually take a head and some cabs to a session just in case. I have had producers who want a sound coloured by miking up speakers etc. Often they dont' know what sound they are after ubtil they have heard something they like. Its good to offer alternatives. Personally I love P basses but there are good ones and not so good ones and they don't all sound the same either.

Fenders are so last year darling Personally I'd go for a 1960's Gibson EB-3

I was more than happy so I didn't need to angle the pocket in the end. My main problem was getting the string height low enough at the bridge. Like I said earlier I modified the bridge and since posting the pics, I've shaved off about a mm from the bottom of the bridge (with a belt sander!). It works and I haven't broken anything so I'm happy.

I've trawled the internet for info on buying a bridge pickup for my EB project. But no joy Can anyone recommend a seller?

Next phase will be to turn this EB0 into an EB3. The control cavity appears to be big enough to accomodate the extra pots for the EB3 arrangement. I'm planning on using the Aguilar OBP3 pre amp with volume, bass, mid, treble pots and a pickup blend pot. The mid pot is also switchable for two different frequencies (400/800 hz) to boost or cut. If you compare these with the photos from the beginning of the thread you can see that the neck now sits much lower (4mm) in the neck pocket. Also if you look at the bridge I have now removed the cylindrical saddles and filed grooves in the aluminium doobries instead. I bit the bullet today and got on with the routing. I've been planning this all week in my mind and I'm well chuffed with the results!. This is what I did. I made a pencil rubbing of the pickup screw holes. This enabled me to fix a piece of 3/4 inch ply to the bass by screwing into the pickup screw holes. I then routed out the template by using a bottom bearing trimmer bit (simply following the profile of the existing neck pocket). Then I changed router bit to a top bearing trimmer / plunge bit, set the cut depth and took off about 4mm from the neck pocket depth. I then put everything back on and lowered the bridge saddles. Then I hit a snag. Bum . Even with the bridge saddles on their lowest position they were still too high. Now I had a cunning plan! :brow: As I have a Hipshot bridge I knew I could remove the little saddles and file new ones in the aluminium underneath. This worked a treat. Now I have an EB with a similar feel to the set neck Gibson.

First I will make a jig which will use the same shim as in the neck pocket to get the angle just right. I expect to take off up to 4mm. The neck will then sit nice and low like a set neck.
