1. Though I'm quite happy with my Ashdown ABM EvoII 900 sound and features. I have grown tired of it's appearance. So I have decided to redesign the case and interface. (Note to readers I have a degree in art so it should look ok!). I will also rename the various functions. In my research on Eqing - I found words that describe what each frequecy does to the sound of a bass. So as there are 7 frequency controls on the amp I decided to give them a name relating to what they do to the sound. I got this far - any comments / suggestions? • Bass: ±15dB @ 45Hz Depth • Middle: ±15dB @ 660Hz Mid Range • Treble: ±15dB @ 7kHz Brilliance • Slider 1: ±15dB @ 180Hz Boom • Slider 2: ±15dB @ 340Hz Clarity • Slider 3: ±15dB @ 1.3kHz Attack • Slider 4: ±15dB @ 2.6kHz Upper Mid I like the appearance of old testing gear / Orange Amps etc. I will create a new case for the chassis to fit in so I can extend the control panel upwards and reconfigure the layout.
You should ask at http://www.rickresource.com/forum/ - someone will probably have one in their spares box. They'll probably want to see lots of pics of your '73 JG. As do I. Jon.
In action!
  3. I am looking for a solution to carry my short scale EB basses. Preferably the shaped hard case type. Can anyone recommend any? Thanks.
  4. Ok now bass has been sourced and someone (here) is going to defret and epoxy the neck for me. Very cool! I am still in need of the following bits: Hipshot Supertone Bridge, Dimarzio Model One Pickup, Schaller 2x2 Machine Heads. If anyone has any of these bits please let me know. Cheers, Jamie
  5.
COME ON!!! Someone must have an opinion. Strat style profile on the front or not???????????
I would go for simplicity. I like simple.
  6. I have a very nice '73 Rickenbacker Jetglow 4001. When I bought it (in 1984) the damper assembly was missing. Until now I never missed it - but recently I got into using flatwounds and a whole different vibe. I want to replace the damper. Now I can easily resource the two bolts (they appear to be the same as the strap buttons!) but I cannot seem to find the strip with the damper material. Can anyone help me find one - or fab one up? Cheers, Jamie

  8. Hello fellow bass people. I have successfully completed my EB (fretted) project by using a humble Epi EB0 as a donor - modifying the neck pocket to give the bass a set neck type feel, Schaller machine heads, modified Hipshot bridge and a whopping great Dimarzio model 1 humbucker. I love this bass, it sounds and feels great and has drawn very favourable comments from some seriously senior jazzers who are used to playing with bassists with trees in the £10,000 bracket! I am now contemplating the same mods on another Epi EB0 but this time a fretless version, with some kind of mute to give the thump and short sustain of a double bass. I was considering two options. One was to simply defret the neck, fill and recoat with some bulletproof varnishy stuff -(like Jaco did to his bass). Or - two replace the fingerboard with an ebony job. Does anyone have any bits I could buy? Or point me in the direction of a luthier who could do the fingerboard?

    Combo

I am about to sell my Ashdown ABM900 head and 810 cab as I have left the band and want to do other things musically and don't need such a massive rig. I want to spend the money on a few other music items (a baritone guitar!) plus a bass combo. I like vintage simplicity if possible - valves? Is there anything versatile enough so I could use for both bass and guitar amp - I used to play my bass through a Marshall guitar head and that was great. I know a bassist from the House Of Love who used to play through a Vox AC30. Any recommendations? Thanks.
  10.
Just bear in mind that it's rarely that easy to swap drivers - the bolt circle diameter and bolt spacing vary quite a lot even between bass guitar oriented 10"s! Alex
Good useful info there Alex. I will make the front panels where the drivers mount removable so I can make new ones if necessary (or just fill the holes and drill new ones). I just love BC! Saves loads of heartache and hassle.
  11.
I've pondered this for a while but I've yet to find a way of making a 4x10" that outperforms alternative designs. However as you already own all the drivers then there's some reasons for lateral thinking. The Schroeder/TechSoundsystems approach will work pretty well - you lose proper bottom but gain some upper bass and lower mids so it'll sound loud, only problem is the risk of excessive boom with the cheaper drivers from the Ashdown. I've just kicked around some more weird and wonderful ideas, like using six drivers in an isobaric ported cab and two in a small sealed cab, to make a tiny 8x10" but the efficiency cost is too great. I would suggest though that you'd probably end up with a better result and similar cost by selling the 8x10" and designing a cab from scratch, instead of trying to work with your existing drivers which really aren't all that great (but are quite valuable when inside a branded finished cab!) Alex
I'm going ahead with the project using the Ashdown drivers. I'm keeping the 810 cab so it can all be put back together agian if needed. I can also buy some quality 10" drivers at a later date and switch them around.
  12.
Do you mean the same as the Schroeder 410? http://www.schroedercabinets.com/410.htm
that looks like an excellent solution. Are there drawings available?
  13.
does having essential two Schroeder style 2x12s not work? I've never seen it happen before, I'm taking it that its not a good idea? Incidentally I mean a 10 (in this case) with another on top and two at 45degrees behind those.
I like the idea of the idea of this! Any professional views?
  14.
What speakers are you using? Not all 10's are born equal, and some need a huge cab to work properly. Also, what sort of sound are you after? If it's a big dubby noise then you'll need big boxes or a sh!tload of watts, whereas a mid-biased grindy tone will come out of a much smaller cab. A
The speakers are from my Ashdown 810. I have plenty of power (from the ABM EvoII 900). I play different stuff so something versatile.
  15. I am putting together two 4x10 cabs each housing four 150w 8ohm speakers each cab will be 600w @ 8ohms and daisy chained to make 1200w @ 4ohms. I'm looking at the smallest possible cabinet dimensions and dont mind ports. Please help with ingenius ideas. Thanks.
  16.
Yes, the bass sounds great, but the track itself needs to go somewhere, it's a good atmospheric groove and all the sounds are good but a melody or vocal line would make a huge difference to the overall impact of the music, but it's a good starting point, hopefully it can be developed further. M
Yes I agree. I've suggested some stuff and waiting to hear back (hopefully I can go back and record some more bass too he he he!)
  17. I can get my 810 and head, double bass and basses easily into a Renault Kangoo!
  18.
sounds funky - in a dirty dubby sort of way - good work M
Thanks for the feedback - The guys who are putting the project together have asked my opinion. I think its a bit one dimensional and needs a dynamic change of some sort.

  21.
He looks weird without the facial hair. He should also reproduce with Kim Deal so we can find out how amazing their lovechild bassist would be.
Yeah but their lovechild would rebel and play something like one of those keytar things - probably in a camp disco band.
  22. I like it Listen to this too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VipwpVmZ89w its Mike Watt with a heavily modified sound.
I play thru an ABM EvoII 900 head and ABM 810 cab. Sound is awsome (even been told to turn the volume down at a festival 'cause it was competing with the PA!) Used the head in the studio too (even with my double bass thru it sounding good). I don't reckon you can judge an amp (or manufacturer) on the evidence of one bassist at a gig. My rig sounds like pants at the Beercart in Canterbury for example, because any bass at all triggers the stupid f***king sound limiter and I have to play really quietly with the bass turned right down.
Oh and I forgot to mention. I really like the sound I get from my Ashdown gear which is why I bought it. But I HATE the styling! It's like some crappy wanna be American thing with that wing logo and blue facia. I'm tempted to customise mine and get rid of the offending appearance (though I appreciate loads like it and fair play to them)
