The only access point to the truss rod I can see on mine is the one in the headstock. It has a though neck, so it's not like you take the neck off and access it that way. So I'd be interested to know how you get to it.
The early Warwicks had a truss rod that could be removed by slackening/straightening the truss rod/neck and then inverting the bass or pulling the rod with a suitable tool, the rod slid out and could be reversed/replaced.
So is it worth £800? Seems a decent price for one of these?
TBH the value is (as always) what someone will pay... I'd not give £800 for it but I would for a nice early one. I think saying that it is worth £600 more after a set-up is ludicrous and as has been pointed out if he is flagging up that it needs setting up, I'd want to know why it isn't done? Truss rod might be a concern (not as common as folks think) and it'll not have the easy remove truss rod but if it isn't an easy fix (again 'why' hasn't he done it) to set it up, you could be looking at a pig of a bass to resell... unless you moved it on and told the next potential owner it just needed a set-up!

Have this set-up and it'll be worth £600 more... so get it done you lazy bar-steward and see if you are right!
Wish I was closer! Doh... someone should pick this up... nearly half the price of a new one, and without the potential wait!
Cheers. If there is no further interest in this bass then I'm going to put it into a local music shop (who will add their bit on top). -
It doesn't look refinned to me John, just paint settling - my recently departed US made Jazz was pretty much like this. I'm not an expert on Ricks, but both that I've had, had non conventional finishes. I don't know if it's part of what makes up the UV cured paint on the newer ones but on dark finishes they sempt to have a haze to the gloss - subtle but definitely present.
That's the odd thing, I've had conflicting messages from folks re. the finish on Rics including a local Ric owner who has an similar aged bass that has identical finishing (including some of his binding coming away ) and he has had his from new also. I just want to be safe/honest and if someone strips the bass and finds that it was maple/fireglo or whatever, then I haven't lead them up the garden path. Still cheap enough I think that someone will either get a gigging Ric just as it is or it'll be cheap enough to have it refinished. -
FS/FT Rickenbacker 4003 Jetglo '04 bass with Ric case. SOLD
warwickhunt replied to warwickhunt's topic in Basses For Sale
Interesting. If I thought that the bass needed a refinish, I'd suggest it but TBH the bass will polish/buff up nicely, it's a bit flat/lacklustre where the original owner rested his thumb over the neck pup position and upper horn but otherwise is in good nick. I should mention that the biggest conundrum is that the bass has only had one previous owner and he is a friend and assures me that he hasn't refinished the bass and that the bass was a deeper/flatter/glossier black when he got it but the finish has settled like this over the years. -
AAARRGH - Just had the worst audition in my life!
warwickhunt replied to thunderbird13's topic in General Discussion
Well done to you for having the bottle to go for it; now just chalk that one down to experience and move on. I genuinely believe that even the worst rehearsals/auditions teach us something (if it doesn't you won't be on the music scene very long ) and nothing moves your playing on quicker than the thought that you don't want another of 'those' auditions again. -
I've got one of these, had it the best part of 10 years and it still looks new. Buy with confidence
I've probably had this for about ten years myself but it has only ever been used by me to transport the bass on two house moves in that time; I've used either an SKB hardcase or a Sadowsky semi-rigid case to transport my bass around!
Do you know what colour it was before it was re-painted ?
TBH I've said that it is refinished to cover my self but a local guitar builder has seen the bass and he is stumped because there aren't any of the usual signs that it is a refinish, just that the paint appears to be following the wood grain as opposed to the usual thick gloss black that I've seen (and he has seen) on other Rics; he knows that it isn't but voiced the opinion that it looks all the world like a factory 'thin' finish. Not sure how I could establish what colour it was (indeed 'if') without scratching away at the paint and even then there is no guarantee that it wouldn't be natural! BTW the finish isn't rippled or anything, it is smooth and any 'graining' that you see is beneath the top finish. I will stress that at more than 12-18" away and unless tilted in the light, it looks like the original finish. In fact I had the bass in my house and hadn't even noticed anything until I took hi-res pics with the camera; the flash brought out this anomaly. Sorry if this isn't helping but I'm trying to be honest and if I declare it as I have, then someone can still pick up a Ric for not a lot of money (for a Ric) and then just live with it and get playing it. As a teaser I'll throw in a Warwick double gig bag for free (obviously you still get the pukka Ric case) if someone buys this bass before I sell the gigbag locally. -
Warwick twin bass gig bag. Can hold two full scale basses. Structurally strong and good but some of the inner plastic protector panels are nicked and torn (that's what the panels are there for) from bridge screws (*cough* Fender BBOT). Excellent condition and huge pockets on the bass the largest one could easily hold one of the new 'Micro-Amps'. Straps stow away in the back and it even has an integrated stand to prop the bag up.
Sounds like the same one!
Damn! Can't make it along this afternoon, I'd love to have caught up with Wendy (and seen the band obviously). She's a great singer/performer, say 'Hi' from John, as I say many moons ago but IIRC we named the band 'The Black Banana Band', sounded funky at the time!
