1.
There is a MM SUB for sale just now for £340 or so....great USA built MM bass
Yeah, just bought it.... Seriously, the SUB is a great budget option if you're into the 'Ray sound. Have had MIM P bass and also the Hohnner B2A 'Berger clone in my time, the latter is a great go-to/sofa/travel bass, also lightweight for prolonged gigs. Sound is leagues above the P in terms of versatility, however for some folks, only a P will do...
2. Now on the 'Bay bump : XL2 eBay Still available to Basschatters so be quick.....
3. Well as one who dabbles in t'other 6 string side on occaision, and if you're looking at exact guitar type analogies, it'd be as follows. Yer P-bass is the equivalent of a Tele, one great basic, extremely versatile sound and in the right hands can cover loads of options. A Jazz is kinda like a Strat, wee bit extra in the pickup and tonal option bag, and again covers a lot of bases. If you want a Les Paul match on the bass side, a fat, ballsy, rich sound which again in the right hands can be used across the board and is most emphatically NOT a one trick pony then is has to be a 'Ray. Amazing bargains to be had on SC and the 'Bay at the moment, decent ones from £600-750. I've owned P-basses in my time, but loving my 'Ray.

7. I'm similar to the guys above, had been playing fretted for over 20 years, always fancied giving fretless a go, got a decent fretless 'Ray a couple of years back and the whole fretless thing has totally liberated my playing, so much so that I never pick up my fretted bass these days (hence why its for sale on the Corner). As someone said, you can pretty much do everything on a fretless you can on a fretted (except maybe hardcore slapping), however the freedom of expression, and just sheer fun of fretless is great. A note of caution, some folks try it and just dont get on with it, but if there's a small chance you could get as much a blast out of it as I (and many others) have, then surely worth a go?

15. Hi guys Just taken some of my own pics to try and illustrate the condition: As you can see apart from superficial scratches and one at the top edge where the pivot strap button slides into the battery cover, there's no major chunks out of it, and its in good order. The other bit of major good news is that I somehow had it in my head it was 2934 serial, upon checking its actually 2394. This dates it to December 1984 and according to Steinbergerworld, makes it their earliest documented XL2 with a flip down legrest. Not too shabby on the old provenance and collectibility front then....
16.
Price looks fine to me...just wish I either hadn't sold my Ray a few months ago, or had some spare cash! Don't s'pose a Sadowsky Metro P/J (nat ash, maple neck) would be of interest?
Hi, thanks for the backup on the price, at the end of the day the '-ish' on £1400 does mean downwards wiggle room which I believe represents a fair price given the provenance, low serial and condition of the bass. As someone else pointed out the market will decide. I'd rather hold out for a 'Ray as I prefer the wider neck and the overall look/sound/feel, the Sadowsky has a more jazz-style neck I understand. But thanks again for the the offer.
17. The nearest equivalent I can find on the open market is this one on the 'Bay : eBay 1984 XL2 which is in much worse nick than mine, and would come in at £1350 before VAT/customs. There's also this of course : Just plain daft which is crazy. A recent UK one with a dodgy neck sold for £999. I appreciate I'm not going to get the full whack I paid hence the '-ish' prepared for some wiggle room. In order of preference for the 'Ray colour it'd be natural ash, a burst (tobacco, standard, honey), black, not too keen on reds/blues/whites tbh. Cash my way would depend on age/condition of the 'Ray, whether it had case etc. Happy to negotiate depending on all these factors.
18. Sauturday night X (L) Factor bumpage.....
19. The seasonal need for dosh, plus the fact I ain't playing it in preference to my fretless 'Ray, means I'm putting out the feelers for either a straight sale (£1400-ish, same as I paid), or a trade with cash my way for a fretted 'Ray, maple fingerboard preferred, and I'm a fussy bugger on colour, but try me. Original sale thread here, Max is fortunately still hosting the pics: XL2 original thread The XL2 in question is seriously good, a 29XX serial dating it to the 1985 Newburgh era, great condition, minimal fretwear, NO dings or chunks out the gel coat anywhere, flip down legrest, pivot plate intact, battery cover intact, original Steiny-logo gigbag (a bit the worse for wear but still intact) plus newer Steiny Spririt gigbag in mint condition. Almost impossible to find one in this conditon going by eBay listings over the past couple of years. Its a plain XL2, powered pickups but not an XL2A with active/centre-detented pots. I'm based in Glasgow, but work near Carlisle during the week for any F2F. Originally purchased the XL2 from SilentFly on this very forum, 275 100% feedback from a well-known auction site, and if anyone's into watches, can provide seller references from TZ-UK. Looking forward to hearing from you before I come to my senses....
20.
The first gig I ever played on bass was a charity thing at the now demolished Cascade Pub in Wishaw, Scotland.
Small world, I grew up literally round the corner from the Cascade, however was fortunate/unfortunate (delete as appropriate) never to have played there, as I never got into gigging until I moved down south. First line at a gig was 'Brown Eyed Girl' on a Westone Thunder 1A through a Roland Cube at the Royal Oak (or something Oak anyways) just outside Horsham in West Sussex. To this day, I can never go to a function where the band invariably has this in the set list without picking holes in the bass solo part, they NEVER play it f**king correctly....(!)
21. I'd a kinda similar experience in my formative years. Had been plugging away learning on my old Westone Thunder, visited Sound Control in Glasgow (this was in the mid 80s when it was in the Saltmarket). Thought I'd chance my arm and try a couple of high enders (for me at the time) a Wal Custom and a 'Ray. The Wal was probably about double the price of the 'Ray at the time, looked gorgeous, but I couldn't get on with the EQ, 100 different variations on a goose farting in the fog (to paraphrase Billy Connoly). Tried the 'Ray, felt great, plugged in and immediately got a great sound, as previously stated, tweaks on the EQ and hand position merely enhanced the range available. Do not underestimate the power of a good simple, 'right' design. Over 20 years on, and after working my way up through the old Westone, a MIJ Precision, now finally have a fretless 'Ray in natural ash with lined Pau Ferro board, and it's absolutely wonderful, so much so that I'm considering bumping my main fretted grail (a Steiny XL2) for a fretted 'Ray.
22. 'European Son' by Japan. Having recently got into fretless after 25 years of fretted, may as well start with the old Karn classics...
