1. Really Lovely. It's on my must-have list but pending the sale of my grandmother.
2. soz, temptation was too much for me. Lord Heeley of Honley
3. It's a 5 minute soldering job. 3 mono jack sockets from Maplins and a £2 mini plastic enclosure.
4. +1 for the TC polytune, simple, effective, accurate and highly visible with the coolest display
5. go to the fabric store at your local indoor market (*or similar retail outlet) and buy a bag of hi-loft wadding, the sort of stuff they pack parkas with (or teddy bears), you can pay a fortune for special acoustically-tuned speaker cab wadding from audiophile shops or you can go gut your sisters teddy bears with a kitchen knife. Kids if you are reading this, remember to first get the consent of your parent or guardian before misusing kitchen knives.
6. I put together a quick little splitter box in the end to avoid rewiring the cabs. Worth a try for 5 mins of soldering, just to get all 3 cabs working off same amp. http://www.colomar.com/Shavano/patbox-split-amp.gif
7. Marlowe DK has been a huge inspiration to many new and seasoned bass players, he's been putting up tuition and play-along vids up on youtube for a few years now. Essential viewing for any bassist
8.
Depends what sound you are after, how hard you hit the string etc. You should just experiment and find your own way.
I guess you always have to find what works for you best, depending on what you are playing, I was just trying to go back and examine what bad habits and shortcuts I'd picked up along the way, that I could address to pick up my technique a bit.
9. A fairly basic question - trying to brush up on my technique a bit, been browsing through youtube bass tutorial videos - what is considered the best or preferred technique for the right hand - there's a lot of conflicting information out there? Some say root the thumb on the pickup cover, some say keep thumb static regardless of which string you pluck, others say the thumb should move up and down with the fingers depending on the string plucked, resting on the string above the one plucked. What is the concensus on best technique for the right hand?
10. gold plating allows them to charge more money as its perceived to give audio advantages which I believe to be spurious or negligible. The contacts do not oxidise as easily but if treated roughly will eventually chip off.
11.
Bad idea. Splitting low frequency cabs will result in all sorts of phase sourced cancellations. What you should do is simply turn the 1x15 (which I assume is below the 4x10) to face the drummer. That will provide him with the mids he needs to hear, while keeping all the lows sourced from the same point. By the same token should you ever run the bass into the monitors it should be high-passed on the board at 100 Hz, providing the mids to the band to hear you while not causing phase cancellations in the lows. If you must have the 210 near the drummer it should be driven by a separate amp with the lows rolled off for the same reason.
I'm not sure I fully understand this, Bill. Are you saying that a 1 x 15 in series with a 2 x 10 (proposed setup) is different to having a 4 x 10 in parallel to a 1 x 15 (current setup)? If I have my wiring correct, a simple 3PDT switch installed in the rear speaker jack panel should allow the cab to be switched between parallel and series.
12. GAK are selling new Hiscox bass cases (for P or J) at £69 which is a pretty good price, best I can fiind at the moment so I've ordered one.
13. This shows current standard parallel wiring at the back panel of the Hartke cabs, if I rewire as per Series diagram then I should just need a shorted jackplug inserted at the end of the signal chain to complete the circuit if series extension to 3rd cab is not being used.. Proposed setup:
14. Thanks Phil, I am a bit of a soldering addict so will try to find suitable circuit on the internet to rig up a box - if anyone has any advice on this I'd be grateful
15. My current gig setup is a Peavey Tour 450 head which runs about 300W at 8 ohm and 450W at 4 ohm. This powers a 400W 4x10 Hartke cab and a 200W 1 x 15 hartke cab. Just bought a 250W Hartke VX 2x10 + horn from a basschat member which would be handy to position just behind the head of our drummer to help him keep time. So if I run the 1 x 15 and the 2 x 10 in series to give 16 ohm, then run the 4 x 10 in parallel to these two, this should give total 5.333 ohm load which will not damage the amp, is that correct? Are the lower power rating cabs the best ones to run in series together? How would I need to change the speaker wiring since the rear panels of the Hartke cabs facillitiate only chaining speakers in parallel, not series?
16. pretty sure allparts do the blank squares too
17.
I would strongly recommend that you at least try calling the Hiscox factory.
I phoned them this morning - couple of jazz bass case seconds in stock, £45 for cash but you have to get over to Cannock to collect. Pretty good value if you ask me, for small cosmetic defects. Sadly I live a bit far away to nip over at lunchtime.
18. What other options are avalable for a hard shell JB case?
19. A little bit of soap on the screw tip helps ease it into place without chewing up the slots.
20. yep, you can use the intonation adjustment screws to fine tune to 34" scale (or whatever scale length your neck is), so that gives you maybe an inch to play with on the final hole positions needed for screwing.
21. If I recall correctly you need a log taper pot (250k A) for vol and a linear (250 for tone to get the best effect/sweep ratio
22. spend a happy evening fantasising on www.warmoth.com
23. guitar body finishes made of polyurethane or acrylic lacquer are built to withstand a bit of meths or white spirit on a cloth, but if you leave a load of meths pooled on the surface fro a few hours it may start to go spotty or cloudy. Now you are hardly like to do that are you? Oil or wax finishes are less ahrdy but I have no hesitation using a bit of white spirit on a cloth to clean down a bass body.
24. Bass now passed on to be circulated within the basschat community
