1. I have tried reading through the sticky topics but am frankly still being rather dim about this. My Trace Elliot head has a 'gain' control on it - whether or not it should be called this I guess is another issue - the usual advice seems to be to turn it up until you start to get the red light coming on then roll it off a touch. For the benefit of numpties like me there is a nice and simple 'thumbs up' sign which I understand. But what happens if you ignore this and turn it up beyond this? Are we in the territory of causing damage to the circuits? Is it the end of the world as we know it? Do I walk out of the rehearsal room to find a dystopian scene of smoking ruins and beggars in rags? Or is is purely a question of distortion of the sound? In which case I might have a bash. As you can tell, I don't really grasp much of this - roll on the SE bass bash!
2. My usual stuck record - you cannot go wrong with a second hand Westone Thunder 1A. 80s jap basses that are incredibly good value for money - great build quality and playability - the 1A active sound is immense. Heavy, though. They are always cropping up on eBay - there is an over-priced one currently but you'll often get them under £150. Or Gumtree. I paid £110 for one in great nick about a year ago.
3.
As said previously a lot of Muse stuff is pretty straight forward.
+1 I am a bog standard 8th note paddler and when the rest of the band I had joined recently said they wanted to have a crack at 'Hysteria' I screamed, silently. But, once you break it down, it isn't that difficult.
4.
This is a popular studio and is used by some 'very famous' people !!! Les www.islandstudio.co.uk
You must mean me? I am there rehearsing each Thursday with Xerocks. See you next week.
5. Yup, absolute bargain - great quality bit of kit for secondhand Squier money! I am making a slight loss on it and bought it at mate's rates in the first place but, well, I want to shift it really. Anyway, now on hold pending the usual.
6. Typical I go on holiday and the first day I am away this comes up! anyone else got one spare?
7. VERY Nice. If I hadn't just snaffled up a Power Jazz Special from Geddys Nose I'd have had this in a blink. Good price, too. Can I ask out of curiosity what is the neck width at the nut?
8. Yes, me too (and thanks for the bump!) - but I need to get rid of it. One more little price dropette before I am forced to stick it on eBay!
9. I have just bought Si's Fender Power Jazz Special and the whole transaction was perfect. Lovely bass, beautifully packed, good price, good communications. Not even sure my cheque has cleared yet! Thanks old chap, it has been a pleasure doing business with you.
10. I usually use a Trace Elliot 15" cab when just using one at rehearsals - love it. I add a 2x10" when gigging for a more rounded sound. Just got me a billion year old Trace Elliot 18" cab... my god... I've yet to pair it with the 2 x 10 but there is noticeably more depth than just the 15" - there's a quality about the sound that you feel rather than hear. Quite heavy, mind you.
11. By way of a small update I will be, with the greatest delight, relieving geddys nose of his Power Jazz Special, so that ought to shut me up for a while. Thanks Si, looking forward to it with mounting excitement. Even if it isn't black.
12. Very true. Plus I have another bass it could go into that wouldn't hurt for the upgrade. Looks like I have talked myself into the Kent Armstrong for now. Thanks all.
13. Thanks for the endorsement, tino. Yes, it is a good guitar for sure. Sexy beast in the flesh, too. I've had a few offers of trades for various things - just a mention that I am not really in the market for any instruments. But I have a list of stuff I am considering buying so would welcome trades with cash either way depending, for: - Zoom H2, H4 or Q3 - John East P-Retro - a hot P-type pickup or two. - Hipshot GB7 in chrome - Hipshot BT10 in chrome (assuming that is the one for a Jaguar bass) Probably worth mentioning just in case.
14. Still here, in it's case, not being played, waiting to be loved....
15. What can I say? Tom said he'd have my old Thunder Jet bass about 10 mins after I posted it was for sale. Money was in my account 10 minutes later. Had a bit of a chat, too - top bloke. Enjoy the bass Tom and thanks for such a speedy and smooth transaction.
16. so no drum kit to share. This has happened to us twice now (at the same venue - won't attempt playing there again) First time we heard the day before and the whole night was cancelled. This time we got there and found out. Silly thing is we rehearsed yesterday and our drummer only took his kit out of the car before leaving tonight. Really annoying. [/rant]
17. Yup - both happy bunnies - thanks Tom.
18. Unbelievably, sold pending usual within a few mins of posting.
19. Moving on my Westone Thunder Jet bass. Made by Matsumoku in Japan in 1984, it is slightly less commonly seen than many of the Thunder series such as the 1A. Satin black finish, satin black hardware - pretty cool looking thing. Passive split coil pup, volume and control knobs - nothing complicated. Neck is superb - a lengthy 34" 22 fret, rosewood. Nice and straight and probably the best thing about it. Loads of life in the frets. Info about them on here Westone Info website where, if you follow the links, there are scans of the original catalogue entries and also some contemporary mag reviews. It is in reasonable nick - a few dings here and there but nothing major. It is a good honest used bass, punches considerably higher than it's cost would suggest - these 80s Westones are built like tanks - Matsumoku rules! Had I been keeping it I was going to stick some hotter pups in it and maybe a high mass bridge. As it stands it is a good back up bass or starter. Add the better pups and bridge and you have a good working tool. I have a Thunder 1A and am slowly moving to active basses - no point keeping both - so this one is going. I paid £72 for it a few months back on eBay, spent a bit getting it set up. I replaced the control knobs with generic knurled (but sufficiently black) ones as there was only one original on it (can see this on the pics) and they are impossible to find. I also changed the bridge saddle adjusting screws to smaller ones that don't poke out the top and catch on my hand. Currently strung with D'Addario Chrome flats - can easily stick on some decent rounds if these are are going in the bin as they were expensive. Looking for £75, £15 to post. Can meet/deliver a reasonable distance for the cost of diesel or, of course, collection from southeast Essex.
20.
Hey There Ive got an original mid 80s Jazz Bass Special (PJ-555) in all Black inc. Headstock, Neck and Hardware. Really light, comfortable to play. Sounds great, and has a TBX tone pot which is a great feature. They come stock with the High Output (1/4" pole pieces) Jap Fender Pickups. I'm a big Duff Fan so mine is modded with Knurled Metal Knobs and Seymour Duncan STK-J2B Bridge pickup. Also worth looking at is the new Duff McKagan signature model. Pretty much the same guitar, although the neck shape is a bit suspect ;-)
Chris - sounds gorgeous - any pictures you can post? Andy - yes I saw it. Nice. If only it were black... are you still interested in a lucite bass BTW? I was looking at one for sale on'tnet recently here.
21. Ok, that's brilliant. I didn't know the distinction between the Jazz Special and Power Jazz Special - ie which ones were active or passive. I think the PJ-555 is passive (but not entirely sure). Geddys nose - PM coming soon.
22. Anyone? Am I using the wrong deodorant here?
23. There must be someone out there in Basschat land who currently/previously has/had one of these 3?
