1. Been listening to a bit of Miaow recently.. Not a band I had come across before, but remind me of the monochrome set amongst others.. Anyone care to suggest what the bass/amp is to get this sound.. It sounds very middy to me, not necessarily something I like, but quite unusual and good because of that. 2.
Even better then! Mix-wise, seems to hang together well, maybe a smidge too much reverb on the vocals, but overall, very impressive. With some tweaking at the mixdown stage and some judicious EQ'ing, will be sounding great. Had a listen to the rest of the tracks now (I'm on my lunch break, hey!) - like them a lot! Certainly the recording captures the energy of the band all playing together, rather than laying down guide tracks and then overdubbing later. Maybe a few places where the timing could do with tightening up - the last 20 seconds or so of 'Chase the Dragon'. The track 'The End' is really good - starts out strong, but the toms sound slightly off timing-wise - feels a bit rushed on some of the fills. Other than that (and please understand, they're really minor niggles), great job all round . And, yep, your singer can really sing well - no worries there. Would love to see you guys live sometime, planning on gigging any time soon? HTH, Ian
Thanks Ian, All very good points. Lots of people have commented on the over-wet reverb, and I am only too acutely aware of the timing issues! We will certainly try to take these on board with the mixing/mastering process. We have been talking about our gig schedule. We have had quite a break over the last few months - mainly related to my life being in turmoil for all sorts of (mostly good) reasons - but we will certainly try to get at least 1 if not 2 gigs in before the end of the year. I will try to remember to post back to this thread when we have a date set. Thanks for listening! James
3.
Given the first track a bit of a listen at work - have to listen to the rest when I get home, but first impressions are good. Some nice playing there, bud Has this been mixed yet, or are these just raw tracks with a few effects on the vocals? Cheers, Ian
Hey, Thanks Ian! The mix was basically a quick and dirty on the day.. We never got the raw protools files though, so it will be back to the studio to mix/master if we want to go down that route... or at least a trip there with a HD. Personally I'm fairly happy with the mix, but maybe it would be good to do some more tweaking. What do you think? James
4. Thanks guys! This is very encouraging! Listening to it myself, I can hear all sorts of sloppiness in my playing, but I'm glad it doesn't seem to affect the overall enjoyment of the tracks. Candice, the singer hates her takes on some of these - to the extent she said she didn't want anyone else to hear one of them in particular.. but I think she sounds great! She eventually relented. I guess we all listen hardest and most critically to our own parts. The songs are mainly written by her (except one by me - guess??), and it's always a real pleasure to play in this band - I think the songs are so well written (well Candice's are anyway!).. Only drawback is I think we never fully do them justice, but perhaps that will come with practice.

Another visitor! Stay a while.... Stay Forever!!
6. Welcome! Any chance of a link to your band myspace page or whatever?
7. We just spent a very enjoyable day at Gravity Shack Studios in Tooting recording these tracks.. All were recorded live (no clicks.), so far from perfect, but would appreciate thoughts of any kind.... http://drop.io/lgvuy6i
8. ... bump! This is a _really_ nice bass! (I should know - it used to be mine!) Only sold (back to gaf) to pay for renovation works to our house (still ongoing... grr) If anyone is interested in the sound it makes, one of it's (many) tones can be heard on my band's myspace page (and in the vid).. Good luck with the sale!
9. I have always lent out my amp at gigs (and borrowed other people's amps - though generally prefer playing my own). The venue we often play (Troubadour) is a very small club and there isn't really enough room for backline for every band. It does help that my amp is second hand and bought at a pretty low price - thanks to basschat (though I would be unhappy if it broke). In my experience to date, people have been relatively respectful (barring the occasion where I found someone had tipped Red Bull over it without mentioning it to me)... My other experience of not bringing my amp was I ended out playing DI, which was OK, but not nearly as enjoyable as playing with an amp. Personally I would prefer to bring my own if needed, and lend it out as reqd.. James
10. Gaah! What a steal! Looks fantastic!
11.
No one will help with VT1-DI-Bass-Drive as it's new - the VT1-EQ-Bass-Drive is about the same price and there are lots of owners on here.
Thanks Dave! Maybe you can help then seeing as everyone else is so quiet! I really like the look of your pedals, but I was wondering if they do the same kind of thing as the Sansamp offering - as I assume, or do they have different purposes? I'm a bit lost with all the cab emulation etc. and whether pedals should be placed in front of the amp or in FX loop. How would you say your pedals compare to the others in terms of sound? James
12. I'm looking to add a bit of grit and get a fuller sound. Has anyone done a comparison of the pedals offered by these two companies? I would be very interested if someone could tell me the likely difference in sound and potential uses. Thx. Edit: To be more precise (the above was written from my mobile, and I can see it wasn't particularly clear), I am interested in: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DHA-VT1-DI-Bass-Driv...7#ht_2406wt_885 vs. http://www.tech21nyc.com/products/sansamp/bassdriverdi.html vs. http://www.guitarampkeyboard.com/en/77373 James
13. Yes.. Good points. And thanks for the pointer to the extensive previous posting on this subject matter. I am clearly not very adept at searching this forum!
14. Sorry if this has been done before.. Just curious as to what difference different materials for body/ neck make - like what's the difference between a high density body and a relatively low/soft wood one? What difference does a maple vs other necks make (apart from appearance? How about hard varnish/lacquer vs. oil finish? Is this whole wood thing really overdone?
15. I am considering adding a custom made scratchplate to my Ibanez Roadster.. Always think it looks a little weird without one, and Phil Lynott had a mirrored one made for his RS900, which is basically the same bass. If I decide to go down this somewhat questionable route, I then need to decide what colour to go for.. The bass is a 2 tone sunburst.. I'm not super-keen on sunburst and I would like to make it a bit more unusual... Any suggestions/pics of wild colour combinations with a sunburst bass would be very helpful in making up my mind. At the moment, my preference is probably for black... seems to look pretty stylish on other SB guitars I have seen.. and much more to my liking than white or tortoiseshell.. But if I could get away with something garish like green, orange, yellow, red, I think that would be much more interesting!
16. I for one welcome our new multi-instrumentalist overlords! But actually, I think off topic suits purpose pretty well. ... If people really do want to set up a guitar forum, theres guitarchat.org and guitarchat.net sitting around doing nothing at the moment...
17.
Great Bass, I have one the same as yours - Very Punchy. Hang on to it, they're not too many around. I Love all the the Classic Ibanez, I tried to find an Ibanez section in Gear Porn but haven't seen one. Point me in the right direction and I'll put up some Classic Ibanez. Cheers.
Yes. I'm very happy with it! Just waiting to see how it sounds with the band after its new setup. Build is fantastically good - amazing how good the action is considering the beating it seems to have got over its 31 year lifespan.. Perhaps you should just start a new thread for classic Ibbys on the Gear Porn section.
18. My Ibanez Roadster RS800 BS 1979 !! So, after endless dramas about paying for this guitar in the first place, then thinking it was maybe too heavy for me and having some trouble with string tone, I decided to spend a small amount of time fixing it up. I cleaned it up, added new knobs, shielded the control compartment with copper foil (as it was prone to buzzing when near the amp), swapped the strings for DR Extra Life Red Devils, bought a new extra comfort strap (plus Schaller locks), set intonation and string height, and tweaked the pickup height. It now sounds absoultely beautiful - A real punchy Phil Lynott sound Here it is in all its glory:
19. Well, no real interest in this one in terms of local trades, so I decided to keep it - spent the weekend shielding the control cavity, then added some new DR Extra Life strings and a Comfor Strap - and it is absolutely fantastic - no more buzz/interferance, and a super - sweet tone, and with the new strap, completely wearable for lengthy periods! So glad the trades didn't work out!
20. Hmm.. Will have a go again, but the height of the pickup doesn't seem to make that much difference. Could it be a dead string? James Edit: I think I simutaneoulsy posted this with 2x18's reply above.. Will try some other strings - any suggestions as to what I should go for?
21. Hi there, I've picked up my Ibanez Roadster RS800 again - and it really is a fantastic bass, if a bit heavy for long sessions.. I guess bass players were tougher back in the 70's! There is one annoying problem with it at the moment - the G string sounds very weak compared to the others - "plonky" with no depth or resonance. I'm wondering if it's a problem with the pickups - which are 30 years old - or maybe the strings I put on it - Rotosound Jazz Flats. Appreciate some expert opinion! James
22.
After messing around with a 5 string at practice I'm now considering them too!
Interested in a 1979 Ibanez Roadster RS800?
23. For cash, I would be looking around £180. But that would be collection - I'm not able to post it.
24.
.. Bump
.. another Bump...
