Wow, thanks for all the replies guys I know that it can be done - look at Mnemic's bassist for proof! All the strings look good. About the 30hz thing - I would assume you can't (or it's pointless/harmful for your amp to) amplify frequencies below this? This is all very interesting, I may end up getting a bass specifically for the tuning looking at the requirements

I want an low F# string, either on my 6er or I'm getting a cheap 8/7 string. Where can I find string that thick? (looking at .160 - .180, not entirely sure which would be best). So after I have strung this beast of a string, how am I going to hear myself? My current rig finds it hard to project a low A at lower volumes, let alone a whole string below. What kind of money am I looking at to be heard at these low pitches?

Looking for a nice loud portable amp to either amplify an electric bass or give a bit of a boost to an upright in an mic'd acoustic situation. Looked at the Bass Cube, and it looks good but people say it isn't very loud? Another option is to get a more powerful combo and then get some kind of power solution, if anyone has any other ideas don't hesitate to suggest them. Thanks guys

If your EQ needs are covered, have different drive settings, one clean, one dirty and one distorted or something like that?

I play with a high low action, as it were. It's low, but I can control whether I get clank or not through the way I hit the string, mellower sounds are more pull and release, where as heavier (death metal) sounds are achieved by a more lever-like motion through the string down into the bass.

Thanks for the help guys Kohpyhn, I think it was compression supplied by the PA, because I plugged straight into a DI box for the gig. I will have a crack at finding him though Dan, is the head Class D? I have no idea about power, xD I'm looking into the Markbass and the EBS, have yet to find a shop with either in stock though :/

Just got a new band in which I slap and pop a lot, and at practice I noticed my highs are a bit lacking when I go slap from fingerstyle. But when we played a gig, the bassist had some kind of beastly compressor (that sadly I couldn't see) which really brought out all of the notes I played really well. So I'm looking for a really powerful compressor, help plz?

I sold it in a week because I couldn't figure out how to work it- I couldn't have found the bass synth if you'd wanted me to. Sounds like a connection problem to me though, try opening it up and see if there's a loose wire or something?

I start with my finger for simpler stuff, but with faster stuff it's whichever finger can get there first!
