1. ^well it depends on what type of music you like, one of my songs is in B-tuning and has a solo aswell which would be a complete arse to do on a 4 string, if even possible. Also another song has the open G string aswell as the low B and it just wouldn't sound right on a 4. it also means you can play more songs without re-tuning and helps playing chords aswell. There are a lot of uses really. And yes what you pointed out is true aswell. I guess it just depends which way you look at it. You could go "what's the point when you could just learn on a 4, it's a bit lazy really" but then i could say "well if it makes it easier why should i play a 4, historical accuracy?" It's not wrong to prefer either really, just different.
 2. i like that, i think it's really cool that you have a 6, 5 and 4 string bass- infact i might do that aswell.
 3.
i just said, "im sorry i cant afford the best bass in the world, i play bass because i enjoy bass, not because i have a fancy expessive instrument"
oh man what i would have given to have that in my head for when this 14 year old spoilt little rich kid decided to start knocking my dean! Oh well here's a guy who has been thru that, so ur not alone mate. Some people just feel really insecure so they start to surround themselves with material goods and bully other people about their possesions to make themselves feel better. at least that's the way i look at it. Maybe they're just tossers.
I personally have a tone in my mind that I aim for, then over time try to achieve it. Snobbery aside, this could cost me a few grand or four hundred quid.
yep, look in the classifieds or on eBay and you just might find an old gem at a bargain price. Like my SWR.
 4. u can get those nash basses of this website: http://www.station-music.de/
 5. i think the idea of a 13 string bass is kinda cool, but it was poorly designed and badly engineered with poor materials.
 6.
http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/StudioInstruments/bass.asp "Highlights * Load presets for multiple electric bass sounds from classic to modern * Play essential bass lines in a variety of styles and easily transpose them to the key of your song * Includes patterns in a variety of styles: Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, Jazz, Blues, Funk, and more * You can also drag patterns into your recording software to make variations * Get bass sounds ranging from aggressive to smooth with control over Bass, Mid, Treble, Drive, and Compression * Select Pick-ups and Slide between notes for even more realistic sounds * Use your MIDI controller, computer keyboard, or interactive fretboard to play * Strings strum in time with the music * Load and trigger multiple bass lines for different sections of your song " now that's scary...
to be honest though mate, that bass doesn't really sound much better than what you'd find on a cheap keyboard.
 7.
Doesn't float my boat aesthetically, but it's a huge mistake to make assumptions about cheap instruments because they're cheap. It's surprisingly uncommon to find any budget instrument with a ply construction these days - in fact the branded cheapos - Epiphone & Peavey for example, are more prone to being ply than unbranded, probably Chinese stuff such as this. Realistically, if the body & neck are decent, the generic components mean it would be eminently upgradeable. For my sins, I admit I'm rather taken by this, from the same seller: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=260156407782 Jon.
the thing i like about that bass is it would work in a heavy metal situation just aswell as the first one without being tastless.
That is a nice bass , im intrigued by this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...bayphotohosting like the see through look and although it no doubt sounds like pants, but for 139 euro who cares
yeah i mean if you actually changed everything apart from the body, you'd still be paying a lot less than to have a see-thru body made by a luthier.
 8.
87 was it's first year as a 5 according to several sites.
took a long bloody time then!
 9.
Err..... Ever heard of Cream?
and the jimi hendrix experience and nirvana aswell. Or are we on about current bands in which case i'll shut up.
 10. well i don't think we really have to worry 'cos at the end of the day more people are buying basses than ever before and i think that if you don't just stick to root thumping then it does entirley have a point. But i think it's frankly a bit unfair really. I mean there are a lot of bassless bands these days but what about guitarless bands? I mean what's to say you can't make just as good song without a guitar then without a bass?
 11.
it's made with Hemp...
yeah just like rope!
 12. yeah the police were outside our house yesterday checking out a toyota celica. Oh right you mean THAT police? haha wow cool. I think they are a really gr8 band and its's good to see they've reformed.
 13. wow you look like you really would have to be Mr. Incredible to lift that rig apart from that nice pair of stingrays, probably my 2nd favourite type of bass.
 14.
@EdwardHimself; funny you say that, I was going to buy a maple neck with black block inlays
well then here's why it should stay natural: and now my keyboard is wet and i'm sure yours will be too. And i'm pretty sure once this is done you will also want to get rid of this basse's stand in favour of your bed!
 15.
Trouble with that is the exposed routing that isn't particularly nice....
which is why you then buy a black pickguard and a maple neck with black blocks. 70's jazz bass FTW!
 16. mine'd be the john myung sig bass.
 17. ^no, you can however go to warmoth and buy a bass tremolo yourself. You would however have to rout out a cavity in an existing bass (preferably a bass that you own ) for the bridge block and springs.
 18.
I have recently taken up mandolin.Bloody small!Lucky I've got little hands!
everybody gonna dance tonight...

wow u guys sure as hell do like marshall!
 19.
You were slightly misled. This is a minor ninth. A diminished ninth would be D to Ebb (which is enharmonically equivalent to an octave).
oh yes i couldn't remember whether it would be a diminished or a minor ninth. But i mean it's basically a 2nd but an octave higher so i guess that was my mistake.
A Dim9th? Or am I completely off?
no, for it to be an A chord, the note A has to be the root note (well not always but either way, it definetly has to be in there) rather than just the string it's on, don't forget that if a piano player plays a D, it's on the D string (well 3 strings actually but that's another story.) So the chord (even though it's not a chord) would start off with D. Then it's a minor ninth. So it's Dm9, you don't have to put the "th" bit after the number when writing a chord by the way, people know what ur on about with just the number. However it's not actually a Dm9 because that only refers to the chord, which has at least 3 notes. What ur playing has only 2 different notes (given that the 2 D's, even though an octave apart, are still the same note.) So i think you have to put some suffix on it but i have no idea what it is. Haha read this thread over several times and i think dlloyd and i have given u enough information to do ur grade 3 theory!
 20. or u could just get it new from thomann http://www.thomann.de/gb/guilddearmond_ashbory.htm
 21. an interval is the space between 2 notes, either the same or different. The numbers go up chromatically. The weird thing about it is when counting an interval, you count the starting note aswell as the finishing note so a distance of a tone is called a 2nd rather than a 1st like you would expect when doing a sum in maths for instance. an octave is called an 8th so because it's just over an octave it's a 9th. However it's only a semitone, rather than a full tone over an octave so it's called a diminished 9th. EDIT: sorry i was wrong it's a minor ninth.
 22. started out on guitar and tbh was gassing for a bass ever since i got a guitar really, more to do with having a band then wanting to play myself tho. However it wasn't until more than 6 months later that i got a £65 bass from thomann (i highly recomend harley benton to anyone who wants a starter instrument btw) played bass in one band, then set up a band where i was the guitarrist and another guy was the bassist/vocalist. He then decided (being highly egotistical and lazy and usless at doing 2 things at once) that he should just be the singer, forcing me to play the bass instead.
 23. a luthite? oh, has it got a luthite body?
 24.
Jeez, there's no need to shout! Following a similar line of thought: why do people assume that what Leo first designed, P&J (I believe his aims were low cost and good functionality) was the pinnacle of evolution from the start, and any changes are bad? For a low-cost instrument he did very well, but he certainly didn't go all out: IMHO the neck-plate and huge heel block are more of an impediment to higher fret playing than an SC, but I very much doubt that was his aim anyway!
let's not forget the fact that he made them 1 semitone short of a 4 octave range. And he made a 5 string with 15 frets, that also really makes you wonder what he was thinking. The point is tho i don't mind modern basses, infact i prefer 5 strings to 4, it's just that i really hate SCs
