THanks James but SG1 is because my bass is a Gibson SG I tried the MB4210 with my band this evening and it was ok, still not as loud as some may say (IMHO) but the room we play in has a very high ceiling and is a very large classroom so the accoustics dont help, maybe in a pub or club with low ceiling will be good . I am a bit annoyed with the company I got it from, their advert for this amp is nothing short of blatant misleading, it states `sends booming signals thudding through the chest of anyone within a 200 yard radius` it is utter rubbish as my guitarist was about 10 foot away and his chest is fine LOL, maybe when combined with the extension cab is loud but the 2x10 certainly is not that loud, however, I think the tones from this amp are very good . You get what you pay for and I like the sound of this amp but am a bit concerned about the potential lack of headroom for larger venues, I can get a refund but will have to pay the postage to send it back, also I dont have any more cash to buy a more powerful amp at the moment so looks like I will keep it for a while . How much extra headroom would I get if I changed the speakers for some higher quality ones ?
I use mine with a 1 x 15 extention cab at gigs, it does make quiet a difference and adds some more bottom end
-
I've got one of these and they are serously loud, you've either got a problem with your bass or the shop has sent you the same one back again, ask your guitarist to play through it se how loud it is then, oh make sure the compressor is off
haha yeah i know what you mean, i saw skindred last week and this is what they do. It has a pretty good effect although i think it can get a bit weird if you have 2 guitar players and a bass and one of them is a lefty. Sorry.
never thought the Beatles looked weird, apart from them collarless jackets
-
I'm a left who plays lefty, there has been occasions when looking for basses I wished I'd learnt right handed, but us lefty's have a big advantage when playing gigs on a small stage, it don't half make extra room if both guitars have the neck facing outwards, especially if there's a singer prancing about in the middle, and it looks better more symmetrical Hercule Poirot would know what I mean

anyway, back to your original question, why don't you put it on ebay 99p start and see what happens, what have you got to lose? you might get £50, and let us all know what happens
TBH I'd be surprised if any of them were any good. I came across a bunch of Hondo P basses over the years and none of them were any better than Encore P basses (if anyone here's got an Encore precision they absolutely love then I am sorry!). Even if it is a surprisingly good bass, the name will keep the price way down.
I've got an 1981 professional II that I'm fond of, made in Japan, with Dimarzio's, made at the same factory as Tokai's I believe, but I may be wrong, again
-
not worth a lot, they'd switched production to Korea by then, the earlier Jap ones are quite good with Dimarzio p/ups fitted, there's a wikipedia page all about them http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hondo_(guitar_company)

Another Jazz v Precision but in context of a gig.

I play in a drums/guitar/bass punk /covers band, have tried various p copy's a MIM jazz and a stingray, as soon as I got a MIA P it took the sound of the band to a new level, it just fills the sound out better than all the others -
Ever tried swapping the pups & taking the Hondo out? That'd be an interesting experiment. Pretty much all of my basses are cheapos (mostly under 3 figures) and I have some absolute stunners. When the bottom line is simply wood & wires - which it is - then it's hard not to end up having the broad impression that big-money basses are more about what they are than what they do. I played a Squier the same as the one being discussed & it was lovely - didn't want to put it down. Jon.
Yeah I put some quarter pounders in it and it didn't make any difference, then I found out mine had been fitted with dimarzio's from new
-
Expectations, you get a cheap bass and you make allowances, an expensive is expected to be perfect, and everybody likes to convince themselves they've got a bargain. I've got an old Hondo that I like to play but when playing in a band a MIA P justs cuts through better and has a tighter low end
-
I used Elites for a while, sound great new, but soon lose their zing, prefer Elixirs now not as bright new, more expensive, but cheaper in the long run, they last ages even when they've started shedding their skin
-
surprised no one has mentioned the stereo version of Please Please Me on the last verse Paul, I think, starts singing the wrong lyrics. Crazy Elephants Gimme Gimme good loving must have the worst played guitar solo ever Is it me or are the single bass notes out of time on the intro to Another Girl Another Plant by the Only Ones
-
we use a 1000 watt Yamaha EMX512SC mixer amp depending on venue it can be used with 2 speakers, 2 bass bins or 2 monitors (8 ohm) loud enough for pub gigs etc

To much theory gets in the way of creativity, if it sounds good use it

E-Bay Horror Stories (Or humourous Ones!)
Complicated innit? I was under the impression that if you didn't set a reserve price, then you had to let the item go for whatever the highest (or only!) bidder was prepared to pay? Surely then, not putting a reserve on it is very risky as you could potentially have to virtually give away a valuable item! On the other hand, an item is only worth what people are prepared to pay for it - so it kind of pisses me off when people list items for a certain price and refuse to go any lower. Why use an auction site? Just stick it in the local paper! Or maybe I'm just jaded as the two basses I listed on there just before Christmas only just failed to reach their reserves...
I would have thought that putting a reserve of say £100 and starting the bidding at £100 is the same thing, the only difference is with the later everybody knows where they stand, or maybe I'm missing something -
Ebay is full of idiots & scammers - my blocked bidders list grows pretty much every time I try & sell anything. Re undisclosed reserves - it's something I completely fail to understand the point of. If I was unsure that an item would reach its market value with a low starting bid (99p, in my case) then I'd either start the auction at the lowest amount I'd be prepared to accept, or do a BIN with offers. I think secret reserve prices simply put people off - personally if a seller refuses to tell me the reserve, then I simply move on. As a buyer, the basic rule of Ebay is that another one will be along sooner or later, and be cheaper & better than the one you missed. When selling I find it helps to discourage the tards by being very, very specific about the terms & conditions of the auction, and stick them in bold red underlined type at the beginning & end of your listing. After a few Ebay sales it's not hard to second-guess most of the questions, demands, requests etc, so you can just politely refer them to the conditions of your sale. If that doesn't put them off, block them. In the face. Or just sell your stuff here. Jon.
I don't understand why people use reserve prices either, I never bid on them -
Stupidly Easy Tunes Which Are An Absolute Pleasure To Play
I've always wanted to do 'I'm so bored with the USA' and 'Janie Jones', but the others in the band won't do Clash stuff!
If your band won't do Clash songs get yourself another band they've obviously a bunch of miserable gits with no musical taste at all -
Stupidly Easy Tunes Which Are An Absolute Pleasure To Play
PaulWarning replied to Hot Tub's topic in General Discussion
I thought this thread was stupidly easy tunes to play, no names but I get the impression some people nominate quiet difficult songs to try and make themselves look good, or perhaps I'm just a crap bass player -
My all-black maple board Stingray from a few pages back is still for sale!
If it's any help I got £730 for mine, tried it on ebay for £800 no takers, with ebay fees being around £70 I got my price and somebody got a Stingray at, what I consider a fair price
guess what yet another failure of my mb115 same probs as last time the solder on the inductor coil broke third time this cab has failed.not good [/quote I touched on this before, would it really matter if the crossover and tweeter were bypassed in the extension cab, can't believe it would make much difference especially if used in conjunction with a combo, I know it's not ideal but at least it wouldn't fail in the middle of a gig
-
Yeh, it is a tad on the heavy side, but nowhere near as heavy as the old peavy im using now. Ive been asured that the cab is built especially for this amp, so it should be fine, but then is it really needed, i saw a local pub band using one on sundayand for a 450 tranny combo it cuts through quite nicely, And for the price i'd say go for it. A good "starter model" if you will.
Just checked and the 4410 is only 300 watt at 4 ohm same as the 4210, so an extension cab would be needed to take it up to 450watt at 2ohm, I use an 1 x 15 extension cab (not a marshall) with my 4210 and it certainly gives it more grunt although the extra volume's never been needed yet! Just a footnote on build quality, further to my earlier post when I connected the 2nd speaker up it sounded terrible, eventually sussed that it had been wired up out of phase, not by me, the amp came with the black speaker lead connected to the + terminal on the 2nd speaker. I may be wrong but most of the faults seem to be caused by dodgy speakers rather than the amp section
I was looking at the Marshall MB 4410 450 watt 4x10 in my locashop the other day, tried it out and fair play there was a nice tone on it. The bloke in the shop told me for what it is, it's a pretty loud B***ard too. Even offered me an extra 15" cabinet to go with it for £500 in total, saving about £90. If id had the cash i'd have bitten his arm off. I'm def getting it in the new year.
I was tempted with the 4 x 10 but it's bloody heavy, didn't fancy lifting it into my car! don't know how you'd use an extension cab with the 4 x 10 cause that one is already running at 2 ohms, be aware of build quality issues though but hopefully Marshall have got it sorted by now, brilliant amps for the money though
Latest count: 4 separate failures of crossover cards on either MB4210 or MBC115 cab in the 11 months since I bought them. I kicked up a fuss and Marshall agreed I could return them for a refund, only the internet store where I purchased them kicked up a bigger fuss about accepting them back for repair/replacement since they are now reparied and functioning. I had to point out very firmly it was refund I wanted. I have lost confidence in them after 4 failures during gigs, sodering of crossover card components was the culprit each time, rendering the amp unfit for use (it doesn't like vibrations much). With the help of Marshall, the retail outlet finally agreed to credit me, so I'm just getting then packed up for return. Sad, they are a lot of power for the money, and some good tones can be had, but reliabilty has been a big issue for me.
4 crossover failures eh, I can see why you want a refund. I'll keep everybody posted if I get anymore faults with mine, or even if I don't Just a thought, I've never quite understood the need for tweeters on bass cabs, what would happen if the crossover was bypassed and the cables were connected straight onto the speakers? I did that on my Carlsbro combo and couldn't tell any difference
exactly my point, you will always be worried it will let you down. STAY CLEAR AT ALL COST, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You're right of course, but if you're on a budget the Marshall has an awesome sound and is seriously loud, but people should be aware of the build quality issues, personally I can put up with them because I have decent backup and hopefully any reliability problems will surface while under guarantee, and I can use a soldiering iron! Lets not forget Ashdown have more than their fair share of critics too. You pays your money, it's just a question of how much you've got
