Sold. Solostrap Neo

Brand new and unused. This was bought as a present, I’ve only just today unwrapped it. Unfortunately it’s got leather ends, and I’m a vegan. The following is copied from Bass Direct’s website: Drawn from the proven comfort, quality and unique construction of the DuoStrap Signature, the SoloStrap was designed for the most discerning guitarists and bassists. Using only the finest of hides from Europe, Canada, and South America, the SoloStrap is meticulously hand-crafted to create a blend of form and function that begs to be worn and shown off. The resilient contour padding wrapped with a beautiful vegetable-tanned leather top and an anti-slip suede bottom creates a lasting personal fit, with soft-rolled padded sides where it matters, and topped handsomely with our distinct stamped cover and antique-finished branded metal rivets. Three gorgeous two-tone color combinations to choose from, with lengths adjustable from 38" to 50" and an extra-long option that brings the total usable length to 62". Padded area is 3.25" wide for excellent weight distribution and superior comfort. I’m asking £35 for it, which is quite a saving.

There’s a guitarist I know on Facebook actually sliced through his hand with a power saw, cutting his hand in half across the palm. Just for a very split second his attention was distracted. They managed to reattach the severed part - though I think the little finger was too badly damaged. I’ve always hated power tools, I can’t even bear to watch other people use them.

Some VERY good news at last - live music back by the Spring?
Basinski replied to Al Krow's topic in General Discussion
There’s an interesting article in the Guardian newspaper, pointing out that whilst the report of a potential vaccine is undoubtedly very good news, a vaccine on its own isn’t necessarily a silver bullet. Vaccination will work along with other measures, including the test and trace programme - that’s still currently not meeting it’s targets, and a requirement to maintain reduction of the spread of the virus, both in the community and across borders. That is I guess the problem with these kind of announcements, we obviously need the positivity and morale boost, but there’s the risk - as seen over the summer with crowded beaches and pubs, that people will believe it’s all over, resulting in yet another wave before they can roll out any vaccination programme. -

Exercise Cygnus took place in 2016. They simulated an outbreak of disease, similar to what we’re currently experiencing. They found: “The UK’s preparedness and response, in terms of its plans, policies and capability, is currently not sufficient to cope with the extreme demands of a severe pandemic that will have a nationwide impact across all sectors,” One problem was that while each government body participating in the exercise had its own bespoke plans, enabling a flexible and decentralised response, nobody in the centre had oversight over everyone else. Social care was found to be a particular concern. The report listed four areas of “key learning” and 22 further “lessons identified” from the exercise, couched as recommendations to government. The report was never published, it’s existence came as a surprise to many people, especially those in the care sector. Maybe if they’d taken note of it, we wouldn’t have the highest death rate per capita in Europe? Especially bearing in mind that many of the ‘mistakes’ made, had already been identified four years earlier. -

I’ve not come across anyone since this started who doesn’t want to hear genuine good news. I’m positive that everyone will be only too glad when this is all over, and we return to some semblance of normality. I don’t class myself as a pessimist, more a realist. If I hear about a potential vaccine, I don’t automatically start making plans based on the assumption that everything will be fine and dandy in three or four months. In fact the various authorities are now pushing back the timeline for the vaccines. There’s also understandably going to be sections of society prioritised, that doesn’t mean everyone else can carry on as normal. You’re also meant to learn from a mistake, not repeat it ad infinitum. Most of the criticism has been well deserved - how many policy u-turns now? -

Flu is quite seasonal, occurring usually between December and March. Maybe that explains it? They’re including both, but showing them as separate figures,. It’s so the figures can be compared for statistical purposes. They’re two separate illnesses - despite what ill-informed sceptics might say. https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsduetocovid19comparedwithdeathsfrominfluenzaandpneumonia -

Personally speaking, I worry about having it and passing it onto someone else - an elderly relative for example - puts me off hugging and socialising. I’d stopped way before the inept, useless self-serving shower of a government told me to. The only people lying about Covid are the ones parroting the nonsense about it being the same as flu, or otherwise trying to diminish its potential for death. -
It wouldn’t matter though. Your finger would be stopping the string after the fret.

Another avenue for money making by fraudsters. Nobody knows yet how long immunity from any of the potential vaccines will last - something that’s possibly variable from person to person. -

In August the EU reached a deal with Moderna to buy an initial 80 million doses of its vaccine with the option to buy 80 million more. The UK could have been part of the EU's purchasing programme, but declined. Moderna have just announced that their vaccine has almost 95% efficiency. Presumably before any potential UK doses are delivered, Moderna would have to prioritize delivering on existing commitments to the EU, and any others who have already signed contracts to buy up vaccine stock? Another rip-roaring UK government success story, particularly when considering the added benefits the Moderna vaccine is likely to have, being much easier to store/distribute that the Pfizer vaccine which requires storage at -70° C. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/nov/16/moderna-covid-vaccine-candidate-almost-95-effective-trials-show -
I believe you’ll need to pay VAT on any merchandise upfront, on entry to each country you travel through - at least that’s what I’ve been told. You then reclaim what you didn’t sell when you return to the UK. Obviously a lot of paperwork and admin. Given that the sale of T-shirts, posters, CDs etc is an important revenue stream for most touring bands, it’ll thus lead to a reduction in income - time is money, they’ll probably have to pay someone to do it - will it be worthwhile even touring for a small artist? Probably not, especially on top of the other expenditure they’ll now be liable for when travelling. We should also remember that these rules will affect artists travelling here too. I personally know quite a few people who work here either academically, as an artist or in both capacities, they’ve already said they won’t be coming, it simply won’t be cost affective, which is incredibly sad, and a huge cultural loss.

Arrgghhhh! This makes me so annoyed.

IReal Pro, I think they have non-jazz tunes too. You can remove the various instruments.

Have a look on Amazon, Focusrite models start at about £70. They simply plug in to your computer via a usb cable.
-
You need an interface - converting your analogue bass signal to digital. The Focusrite Scarlett is a great and low-cost model, they also do a single channel model called appropriately the Solo. If you’re using a Mac, then you should have GarageBand. If not just download it from the AppStore.

Two friends of mine have had it, both are young, both fit and both very healthy with no previous illness. The one suffered a mild stroke a month ago, the result of a blood clot caused by Covid breaking free. The other had it in June and spent over a month in a coma, he’s still unable to return to work. The elderly and those with previous illnesses are statistically more likely to be seriously affected, but nobody really knows how it will affect them, especially in the long term, you don’t necessarily just get over it. Again, there hasn’t been any data released yet for how long immunity lasts from these vaccines - they’re obviously very new. -

It’ll require at least two doses per person. They don’t know yet how long any immunity from any vaccination will last. Your comment about the most vulnerable assumes that they know who they are. The big problem with Covid is that you really can’t say - at least with any degree of accuracy - how it’ll affect you. I maybe being cynical, but they do keep making these announcements every few months. I suspect part of it is to keep the cash flowing, there’s also obviously the morale boost it gives to people. -

Self-employment grant - who's entitled to it?
Basinski replied to sPiKi's topic in General Discussion
I’ve lost a university teaching job because of it, most of my private teaching - I teach at home - plus many regular gigs. I was so relieved when a drummer friend sent me a text to say they were increasing it to 80%. I was worried that I’d end up having to retrain for a job in cyber.
