And it sold for £40 this would of been ideal to take the frets off and get me a cheap fretless to get me going with my fretless gas!
You should take a punt on one of these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fretless-electric-ba...t-/110646503536 I think one of the biggest issues with the ultra-budget end of the market is quality control. As we've seen with the Auntie Sues, there are good ones & duffers, and when buying blind online it's pot luck what you end up with. Even if you get lucky and the neck's straight & the bridge is in the right place, then setup is pretty much guaranteed to be crap, and that's an hour or two to sort if you know what you're doing, or £30 odd to your local tech if you're not confident. Personally I've never bought a new bass - from any price range - that was well set-up when I got it. Jon.
Same goes for truss rod adjustment...
Absolutely. Hands off your rod until you're fully trained & qualified, or no good will come of it! J.
With your left hand, fret the lowest string (the one nearest your chin when playing) at the 1st fret. At the same time, with your right hand thumb, fret the same string at the 12th fret.
Top fret, surely Nigel? That'd be 20th - 24th, depending on the neck in question. You're looking at the overall curvature of the neck - 8th or 9th position being an approximate mid-point. Although I agree, truss adjustment isn't a good idea unless you know what you're doing & how everything works. Jon.

That maple board one - You're quite right - haven't seen one of these come up for a good few years - got an idea a BCer might have nabbed the last one that did... Jon.

Early/mid 70s SB75: http://www.yamaha.co.jp/product/guitar/arc...sb75/index.html Never seen one of these in the UK, like most 60s/70s era Yams they probably weren't imported here. Gorgeous bass & I'd love one, but I think I could probably get 2 or 3 for that sort of money, if I put my mind to it. Jon. -
Seriously cool, Jon.
Cheers Wayne! The J pic's obsolete already, it now has cream pup covers & a black pearl plate, and the P is destined never to be gigged, being a 14lb spine-mangling monster! J.

I do like a bit of maple/blocks action, me: Leaning more towards pearl blocks at the moment - the Seethrough P would've had pearl but the neck got lost in the post. Good old ParcelFarce... Jon.

I've got 3 JapCrap RickenFakers and a contemporary Rick-ish thing - and none of them get the shape quite right. You can forgive the old 70s stuff, most of this was pre-CNC (as were real Ricks, which do vary a lot!) and possibly not even copied from actual Rickenbackers - there are some bizarre stories circulating! I'm not too bothered by what I consider minor differences, certainly with the vintage Jap stuff that's part of the character and the appeal of the things. To an extent I feel the same about the Retrovibe - it's not trying to be a slavish imitation, and I definitely approve of that! J.
-
It is a bit podgy-looking, but I'd say the scratchplate is more wrong than the body contours - if it was a bit more symmetrical, angular & tidily-cut like the original, it would improve the whole look. However, I'll forgive the Retrovibe a lot, if it's red with black binding and costs £260. If I do get one it'll get black hardware (including aluminium Hipshot bridge), re-cut or replaced scratchplate & a black surround for the bridge pup. Jon.
