  1. Unfortunately you can't generalise when it comes to wood, every piece of wood is different and can vary in weight and density even in the same species, I was surprised when I purchased some calibrated Canadian Maple and calibrated Brown Oak from British hardwoods and the Maple boards were heavier!?! Go figure?? I was just going to say about moisture content as that can vary a lot even in dry wood so that will also effect the weight not necessarily the density...........
  2. I agree that most people associate Oak with furniture but there is just as much furniture made out of Mahogany yet that's OK to build a body out of? Also granted Oak is heavier than Ash, Alder, Mahogany etc but it's lighter than Bubinga, Wenge and Ovangkol etc which are widely used for guitar making so I think that people's perception needs to change and use more widely available/sustainable woods otherwise more woods will be added to the endangered list??
  3. Just watched both videos and I agree with @Marcoelwray and @Andyjr1515 Oak is a lovely wood and it isn't as heavy as people think I've used it in one of my builds and it's fine the bass isn't overly heavy (but saying that the body is very thin) I couldn't get over Ben's comment about Oak being ugly!! Oak can look stunning like the piece in your video with lovely figuring, also it can be understated and look very classy So if oaks ugly then WTF is this all about??............
  4. That's a great name to put on my basses "Imposter" I think I'm going to have to use it!! ๐Ÿ˜ A 'Ray will have to wait a while because I'm doing my Fenderbird build now, then I'm going to finally do my 5 string Precision and I'm toying with the idea of doing a semi hollow after that? That's only if I can get the Bass Embargo lifted that Mrs Jimothey has slapped on me!! ๐Ÿคฌ
  5. Great job your attention to detail is exceptional! Love the finished look! Only problem now its got me Gassing for a Stingray!! ๐Ÿ˜
  6. The middle core is now cut and chambered I will cut the top and bottom in the next few days out of 6mm ply then start gluing it all together I'm thinking that to make it a but different perhaps go with a PJ pickup config instead of the standard pickup choice??.............
  7. I think I'll wait to see how big you are before I commit myself!! ๐Ÿ˜
  8. I was going to say the same thing!! ๐Ÿ˜
  9. I think you'd lose most of them with the pickups and bridge but I spose I could lose the pickguard and have them running down either side of the raised section ๐Ÿค”
  10. I got started today the template has been rough cut just got to sand it to smooth it all off I've changed the shape slightly from the original by making a more of a curved bottom of the body, bringing the waist slightly closer together which I think looks better? I'm not sure if I'm going to put the raised centre section in as I think I might prefer it flat topped but we'll have to wait and see?? ๐Ÿค”
  11. I would say you need to seek professional help!! If that bass was mine it would never leave my hands!! ๐Ÿ˜
  12. Quite a few people don't like using routers as you can easily make a catastrophic mistake with them but I mostly use them with a jig and a bearinged cutter so that does eliminate a bit of the degree for mistakes but even though I've been using them for the last 20 years accidents still happen just look at what happened earlier in this thread!! You can shape the body, round over the edges, rout out pickup cavities, etc easier and quicker with a router but they are not essential If you buy cheap shuttering ply then you will struggle with tear out but if you go for a WBP ply then generally it won't tear out as much, if it does you shouldn't worry too much as this will only be a test run piece. Good luck if you decide to go ahead with a build! There's no better feeling than playing your homebuilt bass for the first time and thinking 'I made that!!' but be warned it is very addictive I only did my first one last year and this is my 6th build and I'm already planning the next one!! ๐Ÿ˜
  13. I've got some Crown Tools stuff and your right they are great! I did treat myself to a set of Ashley Iles when my business was going great ยฃ150 for a set of 6 but you can get them unbelievable sharp and even when using on Oak they keep their edge for ages!! ๐Ÿ˜€
  14. Very nice looking stubbies! Are they Ashley Iles?
  15. Yes that was the look I was going for! It's not to everyone's taste but I really like having contrasting colours on my builds............. ๐Ÿ˜€
  16. Thanks I only use a router, jigsaw, hand tools, orbital sander and a bobbin sander on all my builds, if I had a bandsaw, thicknesser etc it would make life easier I'm sure that if you have basic woodworking tools/skills and took your time you could make your own custom bass body. If you get stuck doing something there will be a number of people on here that would be more than happy to advise/help you? If you are thinking of doing it I would advise using cheap wood for your first attempt so that if things do go awry then it won't be a costly mistake........... ๐Ÿ˜€
  17. It smells a lot like cedar to me but kinda spicy if that makes sense ๐Ÿคจ
  18. Here's an updated sofa snap......... ๐Ÿ˜€
  19. Or how about this for a more thrashy/new ska feel? Personally I prefer this version to the original? I really like Reel Big Fish so I might be a bit biased?? ๐Ÿ˜€
  20. Just got to do the final set up and fit the block inlays when they arrive but other than that it's now finished!!............. I'm really pleased with the way it's turned out!! ๐Ÿ˜
  21. I've now done 3 coats on the front and 3 on the back and cavity cover which I've veneered just to give the back a bit of colour, Next job is to solder up the pickups, drill for the ground to the bridge, fit the jack socket plate and strap buttons then I think I'm ready to string it up ๐Ÿ˜
  22. Me Three ๐Ÿ˜€
  23. I've just checked and it's the same seller using 2 different accounts,1 private and 1 business! The listing on the private account tells you to contact the business account for more details??
  24. I dont know if I'm missing something but these look like they are the same bass but with 2 different prices?? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F254125506875 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F273701857362
  25. I decided to not veneer the pickups in the end......... I think it looks better without!!....... ๐Ÿ˜€
