Once again this has changed the fella that wanted it at first now just wants a yellow Strat, Chrome hardware and an all black neck with yellow dot fret markers which is almost finished The original body of this skip find build is now being used for another commissioned build it’s going to be a Strat/Tele hybrid in Satin Black with White pickguard, black hardware and rosewood fretboard with matching black headstock Heres how it looks so far: The yellow ex- Ibby body is now going to be for me now when I get chance to finish it.........😀

Irrelevant how professional and successful another musician is people are entitled to their own opinions about that person good or bad and voicing that opinion if it’s negative doesn't mean you are bad mouthing them I'm sure there are musicians that you don’t particularly favour or you think are overrated etc

I meant to put in the OP that the rad is off and is never used but I think I’m going to remove it any way give me a little bit more space??..........😀

I’ve started trying to sort out my ‘Music/Guitar room’ in my house (mostly because Mrs Jimothey is getting hacked off with all my basses in the front room!) it’s nowhere near finished but was interested to see how other people have done there’s?? and hopefully nick some ideas!! Heres mine just started today please bear in mind the room is only 2.1m x 1.8m so I’m having to be quite creative on how I can fit everything in!?! the timber still needs to be painted the same colour as the wall I’ve worked out I will be able to fit 9 on the wall and 2 that I play the most on stands on the floor I’ve still got 3 more to go in but that doesn’t include another 2 that I’m going to start building soon and it’s lucky that I’ve only got a little practice amp because f**k knows where I’m going to fit anything bigger than that in?? I think it’s going to be cosy to say the least.........😀

Bitsa P Bass 1st problem sorted but now has new problem!!
Jimothey replied to Jimothey's topic in Repairs and Technical
I’ve braised Alu before (which I found very difficult!!) but never tried to solder it and because being in the building trade I’ve learnt how to do other trades over the years I can solder Copper with no problem I only used the Alu foil tape because I already had it but I’ve ordered a 4m x 30mm conductive adhesive Copper roll from eBay for £4 inc p&p to replace it and should have enough to do my Jazz and ‘72 style P bass aswell...........🤞 -

Thank I haven’t but I’m thinking about ripping out the Alu and replacing it with copper instead to stop any other problems -
Bitsa P Bass 1st problem sorted but now has new problem!!
Jimothey replied to Jimothey's topic in Repairs and Technical
Sorry I got my wires crossed (get it hee hee!!) I thought the problem was that I wasn’t getting a good ground hence why I’m getting the noise not that something was touching the ground that shouldn’t? -
How do you builders feel when you see one played?
Jimothey replied to Len_derby's topic in Build Diaries
I’ve had someone play one of my basses I assembled (I say assembled because it was a bitsa) who wasn’t a bass player but he is an awesome guitarist and all I thought was “DAMN WHY CAN’T I PLAY LIKE THAT!!!” Oh and the bass didn’t sound too bad either............😀 -
Bitsa P Bass 1st problem sorted but now has new problem!!
Jimothey replied to Jimothey's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yeah I saw that on YouTube last night looks like it might be worth a try also I’ve seen it done where you sandwich the wire between 2 bits of Alu foil with a little bit of solder in it then heat it externally to melt the solder but it doesn’t melt the Alu foil i don’t really understand how will covering it up with non conductive tape etc stop the grounding noise issue??..........😳 -
Build my own vs Harley Benton vs Gear4Music 5 string P(ish) basses
Jimothey replied to Jimothey's topic in Bass Guitars
Thats what I was thinking I’ve not really heard anything bad against Harley Benton’s Thanks mate I’ll have a look at that later I think if I’m gonna buy one it will be a Harley Benton not unless anyone can recommend any other brand that does a 5 string P that would be worth a look.........😀 -
Build my own vs Harley Benton vs Gear4Music 5 string P(ish) basses
Jimothey replied to Jimothey's topic in Bass Guitars
I read that review the trouble is Glarry I don’t think do a 5 string Precision Out of all my builds my most expensive was about £90 because I don’t use premium parts (allparts, warmouth etc) and because I’m skint I buy cheaper parts that you would find on HB, G4M etc anyway the timber I don’t use exotic woods it’s mostly stuff I’ve got hanging round my workshop at work I've worked out building my own would be approx: Paulownia body modified to allow for 5 string neck and split coil £23 5 string Maple/Maple neck £24 Pickups £20 Hardware £30 Pickguard + Paint £20 So it will probably be around £110 give or take and the end result will be something like this (I hope!!) but with Maple fretboard and block inlays If I wasn’t going for brass hardware I’ve already got a chrome bridge and tuners it would be even cheaper................😀 -
I really want a 5 string P bass and can’t afford a lot (around £100 max) I’ve been looking at the Harley Benton PJ5-HTR Deluxe and the Gear4Music LA 5 string p basses and reading reviews there doesn’t seem much in it? The big thing for me is I don’t really like Red Basses and hate Tort pickguards so I’d have to mod the HB straight out of the box and I don’t know what it is about G4M basses but I don’t really trust that the quality is as good as HB Basses?? Has anyone played either and could give me a review of them?? The last option would be to build my own??

Jimothey replied to Andyjr1515's topic in Build Diaries
But you’ve just spent all that time making it look nice a shiny??........😜 -
Looking great mate!!! I think practical but I think that putting the thumb rest in the “traditional” position looks weird but that’s just my opinion.........😀

Bitsa P Bass 1st problem sorted but now has new problem!!
Jimothey replied to Jimothey's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yeah that’s a good idea I’ll give that a go, this is what I meant about the Alu tape under the bridge No I’ve just made sure that the Alu tape comes over the edge of the cavity so the Alu tape on the pickguard is sitting on it Would you just put an extra ground wire off a pot or the jack and fix it to the cavity somewhere to ground the cavity?? I think I might get some graphite paint and rip-off the shielding and do it again properly.............😀 -
Bitsa P Bass 1st problem sorted but now has new problem!!
Jimothey replied to Jimothey's topic in Repairs and Technical
No it’s just my P bass all the others are fine, I’ve just resprayed my Jazz White (to match my Precision) and I thought that the ground wire to the bridge might not be getting a good contact so I thought putting some Alu tape that I use for shielding between the body and the ground wire might help I’m going to try it on my Precision tomorrow night to see if it helps??..........🤞 -
I forgot the the most important reason my missus won’t let me spend a lot!!! I'm exactly like you I’m not a luthier but I love experimenting and trying different things and in the end having a completely custom bass that no one else will ever have!! I do strive tho to do work to the same standard as Jabba and Andy etc but I’ve got a long way to go yet!! IMHO there are too many brand snobs out there!!..........😀
-
I completely agree with you, I love cheap basses and modding them!! Firstly because I haven’t got the money to buy expensive basses and I’m only a bedroom player at the mo so I can’t warrant spending too much on them either also If they don’t come out how you want them to you can just fill them etc and try again where as you couldn’t do that with a Rick, Vintage Fender etc My bitsa P Bass cost me in total about £70 and I personally think it plays better than one of my mates MIA Fenders but I’m probably biased because I made it..........😀

Bitsa P Bass 1st problem sorted but now has new problem!!
Jimothey replied to Jimothey's topic in Repairs and Technical
@Cuzzie I always thought it was the other way round if when you touch your strings the hum goes then you need to shield your cavities better and if it gets louder then it’s a grounding issue but I could be completely wrong The cavities are all sheilded with Alu tape (as I had a few rolls of it at work)and I tested it with my multi-meter in multiple places and it showed that it is conductive.............😀 -
If your brother isn’t happy then you need to give him a slap and then you can give it to me............🤞
-
My bitsa P Bass has suddenly started making a loud hum when you touch the strings, am I right I’m thinking that’s a Earth/Ground problem or is it a shielding issue? At the moment the ground wire comes off the jack socket to underneath the bridge and is held in place when the bridge is screwed to the body Would the fact the bridge is chrome plated make any difference to the quality of the ground?? Is there a better way or place I could ground the strings?? Thanks
-
I think that’s a stretch too far even for me!! I’ve been having a little play around with a new style headstock logo, I quite like this one............🤔
-
I’d be astonished if it ever sold at that price but I suppose there’s some mugs out there who will thinks it’s a good deal!?!.....😀
-
No worries mate always here to help!! 👍 No I really thought it was worth spending double the price of a brand new one it must be a rare limited edition or something.........😀
