  1. Hi, my name's Chris and I'm a gear-aholic. ("Hello Chris," chant the other assembled members of the meeting.) I'm addicted to bass gear and guitar gear. Just when I kick the GAS habit from one instrument, the other raises its ugly head. Currently I'm in the the thrall of P90 equipped Telecasters (again); there is no hope for me :( the only stepped program I understand are the steps from my car to the door of a musical instrument emporium.

  2. Covers have been a source of material by many of those who are regarded as musical 'gods', all of whom could write a pretty good tune of their own; tribute acts just take that ethos one step further. I've written the odd thing over the years but I'm pretty sure the only person who wants to hear it is me (and maybe nearest and dearest) so I'm more than happy to cover well known tunes and, if appropriate, bring my own touches to it; this allows me to play live and bring some pleasure to other folks (they keep coming back so we must be doing something right). I don't understand the covers/tribute hate. However, I do understand the dislike of bands that just knock out a half arsed attempts of songs that should've stayed in the rehearsal room.

  3. Great vid, thanks for posting the link as I hadn't come across it before. Bobby Vega is a unique player with a great groove, not many people could replace Rocco Prestia, using pick style no less, but BV did, admirably. I've not heard of the guitar player in that clip (very tasteful though he seems) but I remember Prarie Prince from his time in The Tubes, what a difference in styles from then to that video; a very underrated drummer.

  4. I've visited the shop a couple of times and bought stuff, I rather like it and have found the staff to be of a good standard, although that was a while back. My impression of them is that are a an old style shop and the web presence/internet seller is kind of a second string to their bow. However, that doesn't excuse ignoring enquiries if they received them.

  5. Cull? Cull? Sssh! Or Brian May will be along and record a dreadful protest song :D

Seriously though, I like to have basses that get played and normally move on any surplus. I did buy, and still have, a P bass for 'collection' purposes but I feel I should even move that on; rather like a toy that is not played with, an unplayed bass is a sad thing. After all it's not really culling, more re-homing.

  6. Given that the current coming in is then conditioned by a transformer, surely we need better transformers. It's all an argument with one important overriding factor for bass players, no one in the crowd (except for other bass players) is consciously listening to us anyway :D

  7. I use a Cub at home and then couple it with a powered cab for live work with a band. I was talking with the guys from Bass Gear at the Lonson show and they were telling me that, despite it's smaller drivers and overall size, the double 4 has a much fuller bottom end due to the rear porting (assuming it's somewhere near a wall of course). The Phil Jones 'sound' (to my ears at least) is very, very uncoloured and gives a very accurate representation of what is being played, which in my case exposed some sloppy muting that I hadn't noticed with my old Mark Bass rig. PJB are super helpful, why not drop them a line and let them help you, Phil himself answered one of my queries. Whatever you decide I don't think you'll be disappointed with either product.

    Personally I prefer Dimarzio. :)
[/quote]Me too (and Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson - although the SD P90 Soapbar is my favourite of that type) and as a company they seem more customer focused; I once asked SD a question - nothing, asked DiMarzio a question and got an answer with 48 hours from Steve Blucher himself. Maybe that's a East/West Coast thing as I've found Tech21 to be hugely helpful and on the ball too.

  9. Something like this maybe http://www.amazon.co.uk/Toolzone-300mm-Flexible-Power-Extension/dp/B001THDLK4 or this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Flexible-Flexi-Drive-Drill-Shaft-With-Keyless-Chuck-36-915mm-/310850904019 ?

  10. Every time I see a live gig with an SR5 being used I'm always struck by how well they sit in the mix, occupying a space all on its own where it is clearly audible but yet still totally supportive. I think I'll have to have another one day, probably an SBMM if I can't find a reasonably priced 2nd hand US model.

  11. To be honest they all sounded remarkably similar, with only tiny nuances between them. However, the bass I liked the tone of most for all the styles was the Gibson LP, a bit more individual than the others with a nice, yet balanced, growl. My least favourite was the Fender Starcaster across all the styles with the EB2 coming a close second to last.
