1. I played my new Elwood in 'anger' for the first time last night. Everything I gushed about earlier was there in a band situation; marvellous. The smallest turn of the blend control altered the tone to fit each song perfectly (not that I need to alter it from the both pickups on full setting very much). Ergonomically, my shoulder thanked me for not having to support the Rickenbacker for a full rehearsal session.

On a separate note, I'm so impressed with the Delano JSBC HEs that I'm looking to replace the pickup in my fretless with the Delano MM equivalent.

    Another of my favorites is David Grissom from the short lived and now defunct Storyville with Malford Milligan on vocals. We do a few of their songs in our set including;
I loved Storyville, especially the first album, A Piece Of Your Soul (the second, Dog Years, was a bit meh); great guitarists, top vocals and a rhythm section to die for (Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton).

Just flicking through the channels tonight and came across Later, a black woman on guitar and backed by a band made up of Mumford and ZZ Top lookalikes - bloody awful IMO.
I wondered just how hard the guitarist had to work to mess up the classic sound of a Gretsch into a Fender so badly. I found the conflicting tones of the guitar, her voice and the rest of the band rather jarring.

Just a question about those Delano's how close to a Stingrayish grind are yours? The one in my Flying V is really close to that tonality, but still sounds like a P pickup.

Just wondered if the pickups in your Elwood did the same thing for Jazz's!
Very much a gritty J bass sound when combined or with the bridge soloed but without going very dirty (which I found with the Norstrand Big Singles, which wasn't a bad thing, just different). The neck soloed starts to sound very P bass-ish when pushed, which I like very much.

  5. It's been two days since receipt of my new Elwood L and I seem to be more open mouthed every time I play it. This is my first fretted Maruszczyk and I'm absolutely knocked out by the quality of the fretwork. I've tried and bought (not all of them) many top end guitars and basses and this is without doubt the best finished neck and fretboard I've ever played, bar none. As previously mentioned, I've replaced the strings with EB Cobalt flats and I've just replaced the tone capacitor to my preferred 1 meg value and I can honestly say that I don't think this bass could be any better now. A massive shout out for the Delano JSBC HE pickups, they're really articulate and clear, but growl nicely when you dig in. I'm seriously considering changing out the Bassculture MM pickup on my Elwood L fretless for an MC-4 HE on strength of these jazz pickups. Suffice to say that I'm a very happy camper and even more of a fanboy than I already was.

I've put the first coat of oil on, I'm quite pleased with how the colours have come out so far.

:o Gah! I need to get a dribble guard for my keyboard.

    Laaaavly!
Congrats mate, we'll need a family portrait of course...
Time for another 'basses on the settee shot'.

I've just fitted my preferred EB Cobalt flats and tweaked the truss rod and it's even better than it was already, an absolute tone monster!

    That is bloody gorgeous!

  9. Just eight weeks from placing the order, my new custom Elwood L has arrived and, as expected, it is just fantastic. Nice and light weight (although a tad heavier than my Elwood L fretless) stunning to look at, plays really easily and sounds amazing; really loud and articulate thanks to the Delano JSBC HE pickups. So, without further delay...

Some interesting guitars cropping up today.

Some PRS singlecut SE's crop up broadly on budget:

These Harley Benton's must be too good to be true - surely?
The price of that 450 is just amazing and the 550 isn't exactly expensive either. :o

  11. Another +1 for the PRS SEs. I had one of the singlecut, LP-alikes and it was marvellous. I tried upgrading the pickups with a set of Seymour Duncans and a set of Bareknuckles but ending up putting the originals back in, as the 'upgrades' were no better. Top quality guitars that punch way higher than their sticker price.

quiet a lot of TOGWT content appears in oldies music programmes, watched one on the yesterday channel of all places the other day which was almost exclusively Whistle Test content, there's a bit of rose coloured specs going on here, there was an awful lot of crap on the Whistle Test as well as the good stuff, bit like Jools :)
I agree on the rose tinted specs with regard to some of the content, you can't please everybody, as tastes in music differ (fortunately) but I still think the format was superior to Later.

I have a solution for you, take one of your old thicker strings & cut a short (about an inch) piece off, stick it down the hole with the D string & it'll bite into it & keep it firm.
Now that's a top tip!

  14.
It's as if it was the illegitimate love child of TOTP and TOGWT.
My thoughts exactly. It's like it's a music program devised by a focus group (like a lot of BBC programming). Speaking of TOTP, given that the Beeb don't seem to tire of rehashing that cheese-fest, why don't they repeat some Whistle Test too?

Bring back The Old Grey Whistle Test.

    End of story.
Loved Whistle Test. A great show, although sometimes it wasn't to my taste. However, the presenters didn't feel the need to play along with the artists or for there to be a pseudo party vibe.

Really interesting, why do they suggest do that?? Feel like that would be tricky on a headstock with smaller tuning posts.
I have no idea, I had never done it before. However, the question had been asked and this looked like a solution so I thought I'd share. Smaller tuners might well be an issue, but it's an option if you have a problem I guess.
