With restrictions being lifted, the best advice I can give is to go a shop with a good range and play a bunch until you find what feels and sounds right for you. As a start point, a Fender Jazz and Precision and an MM Stingray (or Sterling) are some to try. Then you could move onto some of the other 3 makes you mention, all of whom make a very fine bass. If you can get to The Gallery in Camden, they’ll look after you very well, have all of those you mention and then a load more.

Does anyone know what the Maruszczyk standard bridges are made from? I had one of the black ones off of my Elwood L the other day and where the paint has been scraped away for a better earth connection, it looked decidedly coppery. I only ask as I might be looking to replace it and have poked my nose into the aluminium vs brass rabbit hole (😬) and want a point of reference.

Whereas the '60s is worshipped and revered, when there was even more, let's be nice and say 'sub par', output. To be clear, I was brought up in the '60s, so it's not as if I don't have a connection to it. For me the '70s and '80s were decades when not only were there significant changes, but the level of musicianship seemed to increase too. It was born out of the '60s certainly, but one swallow (or two) does not make a summer, to coin a phrase. As ever, YMMV.

I played in a band that was on the bill for a day long extravaganza at the Crystal Palace Bowl. The stage was huge. I did the required running across the stage for my ‘Woodstock Moment’ and unplugged my guitar. Rookie error, but I reconnected in time to play the signature riff of the song.

I use my Cub for just home playing these days, which is a bit of a luxury as the Flightcase would be fine, probably better, but the Cub was my first piece of PJB kit and, up until recently, I’ve had no reason to move it on. However, since acquiring a Yamaha Sessioncake, the Cub’s time may be up.

Quite a bit. It’s really doing the ‘heavy lifting‘. I have tried just using the Flightcase, but I’d probably need to run it flat out in a full band situation and it still might be enough. I have, however, used it on its own for jazz trio gigs, where it was more than adequate. Adding the PB300 makes it effortless for rock/pop gigs and also adds a bit more low end. It also lifts the Flightcase up off the floor for better monitoring from the upfiring speakers. I have also used the PB300 with just a Cub or a Bass Buddy as the ‘brain’ and it was just fine.

I received a card and text, which is all I really want (a visit just isn’t feasible at the moment). She’s looking pretty spry for 38! I’m guessing she was about 18 months here.

My MXR M87 arrived today. I’ve put it through it’s paces with a few basses, with both headphones and small amp (I’m at home and there are limits). It’s interesting to see the difference in output of two basses that, to my ears, sounded the same level (the VU is super useful). The M87 sorted out the levels of all three, even bringing a particularly hot, active piezo under control without killing the natural sound and needing to use the active pad on the amp. It’s certainly less squashy than the limiter circuit on the amp (although it can be if you want). I’m impressed and this will now be on all the time. Voted.

My PJB rig (Flightcase + 6x5 powered cab) punches to the back of a fair sized establishment at only half way up (I realise these things are not necessarily linear) and I’ve never felt I need more.

The 80s was a great decade IMO. Yeah, there was some dross, but there was also crap in to 60s and 70s and the 90s is where, for the most part, music went to die (obviously IMO and YMMV). My 80s band do 4 of those in our set and you'll no doubt cover the rest as you go through the decade.

Damn, these threads give me Jabba Custom Build GAS! Having played one doesn't make it any less GAS inducing either, in fact it amplifies it!
