1. "I'll get me coat so.. (shouldnt have mentioned those 7ths!) " Sorry John i should have explained my self better Now that i have the ball rolling can anyone explain more about the melody note and finding it (Sorry if these are stupid or nonsense questions) does it always relate to the vocal or other melody that is happening over a chord For example if i play "A" as the melody note over a C maj chord does this mean that the chord should be changed to C6 or maybe C13 i suppose depending on what the 7th is If the melody note is a root or a fifth can the chord be almost anything with the same root or fifth What happens when theres more than one melody note, are melody notes always from within the arpeggio or scale of the chord Cheers Frank
2. Thanks for the help lads Im ok (for my level) with the theory end of it , intervals ,building chords, spelling scales ,arpeggios ect ect, probably spent to much time on this instead of the practical what does x y or z actually sound like Its the practical how to im after like Doddy and XB26354 have said find the root. find the top note. is it maj .or min. if not its sus ect Is piano the be all end all for ear training or is it possible on guitar as i have more experience on guitar than piano. But i suppose piano gives you one hand to chord with and the other to figure out whats going on. By seeing how everyone else does it im trying to get myself on the right track it seems that seeing is the problem and hearing is the answer so it looks like ill be needing a keyboard. At the moment im using the Gary Willis ear training book, are there better methods or is it just a case of get the stuff learned whatever way you can. Thanks again Frank
3. Hello everyone im new to reading music, still learning ,(im also doing ear training) but id like to get to the stage of writing songs down when i learn them.It would help both my reading and my ears I dont have a problem learning bass lines or melody lines even simple solos when i put the effort in, and i can see how i will be eventually able to write (or transcribe) these lines. But when it comes to chords im often in the dark as to what im playing over. ill mostly know what the root is,and if its major or minor.Or on a simple tune with one key if its maj7 min7 or dom7. In a live setting im flying blind and just playing what sounds good or sticking to the one or two notes i know fit. So im wondering how everone else goes about it, is it a matter of hearing and knowing the sound are there methods to go about it or to help me go about it. Hope im not rambling to much any help would be appreciated
4.
Not a transcription, frank, but I do have a chart. Have you got it?
Yeah i have the chart thanks, im just being really really lazy Will be more benefit to me to figure it out myself anyway cheers
5. Thanks Bilbo ill have a go at that By any chance would you have a transcription for Terminal Baggage Claim on the Chick Corea Akoustic Band Album which im learning at the minute.
6. I got a Streamer stage 1. 5 string, before christmas and have since sold my fenders and other basses the sound and build quality is amazing. its a little uncomfortable to play compaired to a jazz probably cause ive moved to 5 strings as well. but gets easier to play all the time. i tried other warwicks in the past and didnt like them but the streamer sound really is something else. Its well worth a try
7. Bands come and go definately dont sell your gear use the extra free time to learn some music youve always wanted to do and like everyone has said get out of the house meet people search the want ads and all that just dont let the attitude of one dipstick musician spoil music for you.
8. Does anyone have a 5 string california P. would love to hear what they are like its what im gasing for at the minute Exactly like niceguyhomers only plus B string minus the musicman pickup. Been on the sandberg site drooling (especially the relics, best ive seen) but dont think they do maple necks on 5s Im playing a warwick streamer 5 at the minute, how would the neck on a cali 5 compare with the warwick. And the 35 inch scale is it noticable (small hands) Cheers
9. Do you know what street they are on? Thanks Mark Exchequer st. and Drury st. In the middle of George st. and Grafton st. so not hard to find id agree with the post about the exchange rate definately not worth buying anything here even if you can find it. Wouldnt bother looking in any of the other music shops in Dublin they are just full of not so cheap crap Have Fun
10. Short answer is no theres nothing worth going out of your way for. But you could try Musicmaker and Musician Inc. which are both beside each other I havent been in either of them for quite a while but they are your best bet on finding something
11. Fantastic just the kind of band id like to be in Best of luck with it
12. Went with the Scotch Brite idea and it worked great Very hard to show in a photo were the dirt was and how well it looks now Have a half way shot which shows how much stuff came off, most of this was probably wax but the dirt came off as well and some finished shots cant show in photos how well it looks but you get the idea
13. Thanks hillbilly i may give this a try
14. "you can also apply a coloured/stained wax to your bass " Is this a one time thing or would it also need to be reapplied every so often I can see where im going with this ill probably just leave the dirt and not bother waxing to often (never) How bad can it go has anyone got a really krusty example ( Bass i mean! ) they can show
15. Thanks for the help lads will probably tackle this over the holidays not sure what way to go, if i sand it or rub it with scotch brite will it leave sanding marks (suppose it depends what i use) will the lighter fluid soak into the body or is it just a few drops on a rag if i go with that method This is probably one of these if its not broke dont fix it things but if i have to wax this bass quite often then id like the effort put in to look really good not just waxing over dirt Cheers
16. Bought a streamer stage 1 last saturday Have spent most of the week setting it up how i like it, put on a new nut set the action ect ect and have waxed it a few times but some of the dirt on the body seems to be engrained into the wood and discoloured can i do anything about this. Its a maple body by the way. This dirt is probably only something i would notice. In some places if i rub my fingernail on the dirt it will come off so im wondering could i sand it off. Also im wondering as Warwick do oil coloured finishes could i do an oil coloured finish on the Bass myself if i cant live with the dirt. Cheers
17. Searching through a haystack is exactly how i feel about it at the moment
18. "Are you saying that you'd like to be able to know what you can/can't play or what will/won't work over a given chord/chord progression? i.e. to feel comfortable playing over chords and changes?" Yes this is what im after " The Jazz Theory Book by Mark Levine has the Continuous Scale Exercise which is actually very similar. Strong beat/weak beat goes back to bebop and beyond so is hardly novel or new - but it is actually quite important to learn to create better phrasing. Again the Jazz Theory Book says that scales are just an available pool of notes so jazz musicians should be able to play any note of a relevant scale over a chord at any time. One BIG caveat about Willis' book is that for walking bass lines most of what he puts is a bit busy melodically - you'd have to be a very skilled and experienced accompanist to make some of those lines work." I also have the jazz theory book ( i think ive got method book gas ) the ideas in all of these books are the same, just coming from different angles its all just scale exercises. Im not suggesting that Willis has invented or discovered music theory id agree that his lines in the book are "busy melodically" or as i said like a formula, but they are just examples or pools of notes What it boils down to i suppose is that im about to spend a good deal of time learning this type of scale/chord stuff and id like to make the most of it so has anyone used these scale exercises or found them usefull starting with the Root i can play a lot scales/chords/arpeggios but i have only learned the shape sometimes the sound but beyond the root name im lost as to the names of the other notes when in a playing situation Hope this makes sense im rambling
19. Listening and copying is great untill i want to take the bass line further and improvise my own line as i wont know ,or will have a foggy vision of what the chords are behind the line if you know what i mean At work at the minute have to go
20. My chord/scale and fingerboard knowledge is something i need to work on so im wondering about the pros and cons of these two methods , Willis - fingerboard harmony & Putter Smith - Improvising hand book I like in the Willis book where you are confined to a certain number of frets but the putter Smith book seems like a simpler way of getting a lot more done am i right ? I need to get the nuts & bolts covered as quickly and simply as possible, ive been playing for a long time but havent learned this stuff properly so theres a hole in my playing when it comes to playing through unfamiliar chords or keys or tunes with lots of chords I would hope that this study would lead to more melodic playing and solos Another question is that Smith plays sharp 4ths on major and dominant chords where as Willis avoids the 4th alltogether on these chords, he also avoids the 6ths as far as i can see is this just a question of musical taste Willis uses strong beats, weak beats for note choices where as Smith seems to have all notes equal (except the natural 4th) the strong beat/weak beat idea seems very strong even if a bit like a formula Again is it just musical taste and a question of getting the stuff learned by some method or other and then adjusting to suit.
21. Im no great player but i found it very awkward to play even a major scale when tuned in 5th s never mind a tune i know just for the fun of it are there any other tunings for bass worth having a go at.
22. I would love to know this as well. The intro is so low i'd imagine it was keyboard but then when the main groove comes in its a Bass Is there any bass action like this on her new live dvd Heard some of it on you tube its more jazzy the stuff i heard
23. Check out a fella called Joel quarrington (www.joelquarrington.com) he plays double bass tuned CGDA like a cello apparently it gives you a fantastic range and is great for solos after you relearn the neck. havent checked his site so not sure whats on it I did tune one of my basses in 5th s to see what its like but the brain couldnt cope so quickly re tuned This guy is a bit of a virtuoso he auditioned for the Toronto Symphony orchestra played the audition tuned in 4th s then when he got the gig re tuned to 5th s
24. theres a similar thread on here somewhere just cant remember where
25.
The bass seems to be really too big for him. Should really go for a 30" or something. I mean, it just looked odd.
yeah the bass is too big its killing his fretting hand and i think he also wants to kill the cheesy vocalist who probably picked the song for him
