Following on from a recent post were moondance has come up as a bad walking line, and over time it has come up again and again. Can someone or maybe several of you wiser people take on with this Mighty challenge. Im not taking pot shots or criticiseing the song the original bass player or anyones opinion or taste in any style of music this is purely for my own education. Back in 1999 i liked this bass line so much i not only learned it i wrote it out ( in tab as i only reciently started reading music ) if im able to attach it this it may save you having to listen to it too much just stick in the correct rhythms. Obviously i know at this stage the chords are wrong (got them form a guitar book) and therefore the note functions i wrote underneath also, but this was 12 years ago. This song was one of my stepping stones into walking bass. I went on to play it to death with a band with a kinda semi rock feel sometimes twice a night, so i cant bear the song at this stage either. But i think it could be fun, a challenge, interesting and beneficial to me and maybe lots of others if some of you could take on with this. 1. Analyse the line, show the bad note choices and which notes flow better (the original is very clunky so this may not be of much benefit so on to number 2) 2. Remake the line as a proper walking jazz bass line. At the moment i can only think of two players (who are still alive) that deserve to have their own signature model this being their go to bass that they play 90-95% of the time and thats Steve Harris and Marcus Miller maybe Geddy Lee as well, there are probably others but not many id say

sorry lads double bass with a bow isnt for me kinda sounds like someone set a bag of cats on fire (i swear it wasnt me) no offence Mr Wolf i know you have great musicianship technique and so on and can easily play other material maybe even some funk. Theres nothing as good as a funky double bass. Anyway check this guy out on youtube adambenezra (dont know how to link it) its not strictly funk but its fun and hes a great musician also, thats what id like to hear at a doublebass party.

any chance id see a EUB there or will it be a totally classical affair anyway it could be interesting

hello everyone, great advice what im wondering now is in this book by J des Pres that most of us are using is there are no tempo markings so at what tempo should i say ok this is good enough. for anyone with the book im talking about chapter 3 Ex 2a (i cant get past 100bpm with that one) for anyone without the book its a very simple example with mostly 8th notes some halves and quaters also the only notes used are E F G and A. And at this point there are no keys involved. Whats an acceptable tempo for reading 8th notes at this point Also like Jam and Bob id like to be reading the Motown book sometimes i read through it just tapping out the rhythms not always at the same tempo as the song as most of them are around the 100-120 mark Cheers

Hello Jam i have that book as well, and this time last year i decided to do the same as you i think the thing is not to go at it for 3 hours at a time or it is really boring also you remember what to play instead of reading it I did 20 mins once or twice a day 4 or 5 days a week Did that for the first 6 or 7 months of the year and finished all the rhythm exercises up to 120bpm or 100-110 for the triplet stuff. have recently started back into it and im onto chapter 3 exercises on the E and A string even though i havent done the rhythm exercises in a while i can still get through them at a slower speed. So my mission for this year is too finish the book and hopefully move on to proper pieces or if anyone reading this can point me in the direction of the next book i should go for hope this helps Frank

In the late 80s early 90s i was a heavy metal trash metal freak ,i was starting to branch out into other styles a little bit and then i went to a Bootsy collins gig. It blew my head off. Had never seen or heard anything like it. It was a magical Gig and kinda strange ( in a good way ) cause most of the crowd seemed to feel as into it as i was, we were all completely under Bootsy s spell. Very few gigs have come close to it since. Anyway now im into all kinds of stuff and that was the turning point, thanks Bootsy

Thanks lads i forgot to mention i intend to upgrade to 4GB. Have never used garage band is it possible to have a chord progression and have the loops-samples follow it,how much control is there over the loops dynamics timing editing feel Im wondering how easy or quick it is after you come up with an idea to get it recorded can you just plug in and go. Also to start of with will i be able to get by without the extra VSTs drum modules and so on. i was kinda hoping for a one stop shop within logic , suppose ill have to wait and see what i need. I want to start recording some of my stuff at home and eventually collect enough material for a C.D. and also to bring ideas or songs to bands or singer song writers. I want to keep it simple basic and cheap, been thinking a while about computer recording. Anyway tomorrow im meeting a guy who is emigrating and selling all his gear. So im looking at a Mac Book Pro 17 " 2 GB ram comes with Logic Pro 9 and Pro tools (dont know version) a Mbox audio interface i think it can take 4 inputs at once (2 xlrs ) ,Midi controller and some other odds an ends. I have no experience with computer recording but im looking at this as a long term thing and can take it slow. I used to have a tascam 4 track tape recorder years ago and was fairly handy with it got good results (for me anyway) The guy selling says logic isnt the easiest to learn or use especially for someone like me, he reckons garage band would probably be enough. But id like to mess around with samplers , effects , time streching,multitracking,making my own beats,just general creating and experimenting. Im into all kinds of music from acoustic stuff through to heavy metal, most of what i will do will probably be made inside the computer and some recorded from mics. So looking for advice and opinions please about this or what i should buy . Im definately going to buy a Mac of some sort , my buget is an absolute maximum of 2000 euro which has to include computer, interface,midi controller keyboard, and also a guitar so im really streching it. Forgot about monitors but with neighbours, two young kids and most of this being done in the evening would it be possible or sensible to do this on a good set of ear phones. Cheers Frank

Frank: This brings up another point: VOICING As you tried my little melody example on the bass, you are going to get a much more unsatisfactory effect from these notes as they are too low in pitch to make real sense, even at the highest pitch possible on bass. The voicing of a chord will have a huge effect. (There is no "correct" voicing - it all depends on how you want the music to sound.) If you want clarity in your harmony, its often best to spread the chordal notes, particularly at the lower registers. This is something of a generalisation, but: If you look at your fake book melodies you will notice that the longer(held) notes in any tune are mostly chordal notes but there are likely to be many "passing" notes between these held notes, which, if you were to pause on them, would have a distinct clash effect. But as they are fleeting in nature, there will be no discernible dissonance. The Major Hello again Major Ive sold off all my gear so at the minute im down to a Bass an Amp and a cab,with the lack of distractions its helped me to get stuck into learning to read ,ear training and learning songs. Im spending a lot less time here on Basschat (even though its a fantastic site full of great info from people like yourself i spend hours here instead of practicing) Anyway i played the example on bass cause its all i have at the minute but in the next few weeks ill get a keyboard and get stuck in properly and probably have more questions, Ive downloaded some of your lessons they have been highly recommended so that should help too. Thanks Major This makes sense ,even when i play your melody with the Caug C6 C7 or Cmaj7 it works with only the Gsharp and Bflat notes clashing a little bit here and there (to my ear anyway played on bass) So the chord is something that dosent clash with the melody, it may or may not have the melody note in it it maybe a chord the composer feels provides a certain mood or it maybe the only chord the composer knows. I should go dig out my fake book and have a look at the melodys and chords that go with them Cheers Frank
